To be shocked at how my friend responded to her daughter?

Was over visiting my friend today as I hadn't seen her since October. Was having a nice visit and her 9 year old daughter was telling me about the gifts she got. She then came down the stairs with a massive, oversized teddy she got. I said, 'oh wow, he's big, what's his name?' To which her daughter replied, 'non binary'.

My friend then laughed and said, 'where did you hear that?' The daughter replied saying she didn't know. Her mum then replied, 'well don't be silly, that's not a real thing', her daughter replied, 'some people are non binary', and mum responded, 'I know but it's still silly and it's still made up'. And that was that.

I didn't say anything, but was quite taken aback. Regardless of opinions and thoughts on the whole gender thing, surely we should be teaching our children to respect it. I would be worried now that she goes to school voicing those opinions too. For instance, 'my mum said non binary is silly and not real'. That wouldn't be great.

AIBU?

Bear-nedette
Or Bear-nard
Or Bearnice
Or Beardie
Would all be good names

I said, 'oh wow, he's big, what's his name?'

Why did you automatically assume a stuffed bear was MALE?

Someone needs to remove the spoke from their own eye…

Perhaps he’s being sheltered there, after his experience in the toxic masculine space we learned about half an hour ago.

However, to address the gendering issue: it’s ok with animals. Everyone knows that until otherwise advised by the animal itself, we may take it that cats are female and dogs are male (which comes as a surprise to those dyed ornamental frou-frou articles living in Hermès handbags, who are not twelve inches from nose to tail tip)
I’m sure there must be a David Beckham Attenborough documentary on this subject!

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 31/12/2022 16:37

To be fair the only thing I'm shocked at is the mum didn't use it as a punning opportunity.
Non bear-nary
Bear-nadette
Teddy-hose and felt?
She may be correct in that there are only two sexes but she let some good punning opportunities pass her by.

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 31/12/2022 16:38

Surely you mean David Bear-kham? ;)

A spoke? Owww. Bloody hell, are those militant cyclists in on it too?
Jeez, things were much more peaceful when we used motes and beams, along with pounds and ounces. 😉

Not sure what you mean by that

Oh, I think you are!

dorindasinger · 31/12/2022 15:26

Oh right, never heard of that myself. It's a shame everyone on Mumsnet is so distrustful. I see this stuff a lot on mumnset where a pile on and nastiness takes place. Why even comment then? Just report and leave it up to MNHQ to determine if I'm real or not?

Oh, you're real alright. But you talk a load of bollocks.

ofwarren · 31/12/2022 16:46

Not getting very intelligent or serious responses so no point in sticking around. Most of you ladies think you're very funny tonight, you're not - sober up.

I can't bear it!!

healthadvice123 · 31/12/2022 17:48

Her mum can tell her child what she wants , especially a 9 year old.

I think you meant to say 'so-Bear' up! Fits so much better with the theme wouldn't you agree?

PaterPower · 31/12/2022 18:17

It’s pawful when posters don’t panda to you, OP.

But it’s NYE, so don’t let it get under your fur. Dress up, have a few bears and make sure you capture those Kodiak moments.

Scurryfunge12 · 31/12/2022 18:19

A teddy bear is technically non binary 🤣

DuplicateUserName · 31/12/2022 15:19

She then came down the stairs with a massive, oversized teddy she got. I said, 'oh wow, he's big, what's his name?'

So not only did you body shame the teddy, you also assumed its gender?

Tsk

🤣

Hawkins001 · 31/12/2022 18:32

The bear was around computers and got a desire for all that binary coding and couldn't bear to not include it in their personality.
