To be shocked at how my friend responded to her daughter?

Was over visiting my friend today as I hadn't seen her since October. Was having a nice visit and her 9 year old daughter was telling me about the gifts she got. She then came down the stairs with a massive, oversized teddy she got. I said, 'oh wow, he's big, what's his name?' To which her daughter replied, 'non binary'.

My friend then laughed and said, 'where did you hear that?' The daughter replied saying she didn't know. Her mum then replied, 'well don't be silly, that's not a real thing', her daughter replied, 'some people are non binary', and mum responded, 'I know but it's still silly and it's still made up'. And that was that.

I didn't say anything, but was quite taken aback. Regardless of opinions and thoughts on the whole gender thing, surely we should be teaching our children to respect it. I would be worried now that she goes to school voicing those opinions too. For instance, 'my mum said non binary is silly and not real'. That wouldn't be great.

So not only did you body shame the teddy, you also assumed its gender?

Tsk

Gosh, how peculiar.

But yes, I think you're being a bit U.
I think naming a bear nb is a bit silly. I think many families have conversations about things where they will agree between them that some things are best not discussed or opinions loudly shared in public.

My dc know that I won't tolerate anyone using offensive or disrespectful slurs, that they should treat everyone with courtesy and respect and differences are what makes people and life interesting. They also know that I don't believe people can change sex and that identifying as nb is a fad. If one of their friends identified as nb they would just treat it as another hobby that their friend was into. No biggie.

Exactly. I think it’s quite clear who the bigot is in this scenario.

Educate yourself, OP.

What time is the article deadline?

PaterPower · 31/12/2022 15:23

OP - it’s not difficult to work out.

There are posters that like to put up something ‘controversial,’ particularly involving ‘trans’ terms, in the hope they can grab screenshots of ‘terfy’ responses to it.

If they don’t get anyone real to respond the way they want, they’ll use sock accounts to write something suitably ‘horrible’ which they can then s/shot and post up on twatter or wherever.

The faux innocence when challenged is also something of a feature.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 31/12/2022 15:23

Sorry. I meant to add. This would be a great song to sing to Non binary the teddy'

Flapjackquack · 31/12/2022 15:24

So, what is everyone doing for New Years? We are just having a quiet one here, food and a small glass of bubbles.

Nothing here
The whole house is full of that cough/cold thing.
Early night for me I think

FOJN · 31/12/2022 15:25

he's big, what's his name?'

How are we gender neutralising this sentence? The second part is fairly straightforward (what's their name) but what about the first part?

Them's big?
They's big?
Their's big?

Oh right, never heard of that myself. It's a shame everyone on Mumsnet is so distrustful. I see this stuff a lot on mumnset where a pile on and nastiness takes place. Why even comment then? Just report and leave it up to MNHQ to determine if I'm real or not?

Yet another one of these threads. OP go & sit by the fire & have a relaxing NYE instead of posting this goady nonsense.

We're not that stupid 🙄

How many bears were there?

PaterPower · 31/12/2022 15:29

“That’s a big teddy”?

But the remarks about teddy’s girth are problematic too, I thought?

So.. “that’s a teddy comfortable in it’s fur” perhaps?
