To ask you what time a 5 yr old should go to bed

I've heard 7.30; is that normal?

We never manage it that early but I'm worried it's affecting her in school (esp towards home time).

What time do/did you have for your 5 yr olds?

Thank you

Depends on what time they get up? 5 year olds need 11-12 hours sleep, roughly. So, if they get up at 7am, they need to go to bed by 7-8pm. If they get up at 8am, 8-9pm bedtime is fine.

Is your child tired in the morning? Do they wake by themselves, or do you have to wake them up?

KG89 · 29/12/2022 18:01

Always aim for half 7 but it’s more like 8.30 and in the holidays even worse Still wakes up at 6 whatever time we put him down.

Clarabellawilliamson · 29/12/2022 18:02

We always manage lights out by 8, sometimes a little before. If you don't get back from work and childcare till 5.30/ 6 then cook and eat dinner it's a struggle to get it much earlier. We do have quite a long wind down/ bed time though.

Are they reluctant to get up in the morning and tired during the day?

Montague22 · 29/12/2022 18:04

8.30ish can be later. Up at 7.30. Has older siblings crashing about. Eldest would have been about 7.30.

Fairydustandsparklylights · 29/12/2022 18:04

Lights out by 8. I would love 7.30 but it doesn’t happen. Asleep by 8.15 normally.

MintJulia · 29/12/2022 18:04

Ds used to go at 7.30, sometimes a bit earlier on school nights. He was usually tired so it wasn't a struggle.

PointeShoesandTutus · 29/12/2022 18:05

My 4.5 year old is meant to go down at 7.15 but it sometimes creeps as late as 7.45. I wouldn’t want it any later.

She wakes between 6 and 7am usually.

Ponoka7 · 29/12/2022 18:05

My five year old GC gets up 7.30ish and goes to bed at 9. If it wasn't for having an older sibling she'd probably go up a bit earlier.

Smartiepants79 · 29/12/2022 18:06

7/7:30 in our house.
What time do they wake? Are they showing signs of tiredness?
Why are they not getting to bed by this time if that’s the time you think is best?? You have to choose what suits your child and you and then make it happen.

Proudofitbabe · 29/12/2022 18:07

We aim for 7.30pm, but it often ends up being more like 8pm.

They get up about 7am on a weekday, 8-8.30am on a weekend.

Ponoka7 · 29/12/2022 18:07

Just to add if they do dance etc and their older sibling class is after their's, then getting them to bed for 7pm would be cutting it fine. A later bedtime can have advantages if you like to be out and about. As said it depends on if the child is tired.

stormelf · 29/12/2022 18:09

My five year old is in bed by 6.30 most nights, some nights at 6 if she's really tired. During the holidays we do let her stay up later but by 7.30 she will have told us she wants to go to bed

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 29/12/2022 18:10

My son has never gone to bed at 7:30. I'd kill for 7:30!

He's closer to 9-9:30.

I think if he had his way, he'd sleep 10/10:30 until 9.

Towcat15 · 29/12/2022 18:14

My almost 6 year old goes up between 6:30-7pm but he usually plays quietly in his room then falls asleep by 8pm.

awake anytime from 6. I love my evenings and couldn’t cope with him being any later!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/12/2022 18:14

Up at 7:30 for pjs, clean teeth and story, lights off at 8.

Muststopeating · 29/12/2022 18:14

7pm! 6.30pm if they are flagging and 7.30pm if we slip.

Wakes up at 6.30am-7am (but stays in bed til gro clock goes yellow at 7am) without fail, whatever time they go to bed so a late bedtime directly reduces their sleep and I can absolutely see the difference in behaviour.

My 5 year old is my eldest of 3 and they all go to bed at the same time and (generally) sleep through.

JustLikeJasper · 29/12/2022 18:17

4.5 year old 6.45pm-7pm
He has sleep apnea and night terrors so never gets a good nights sleep. Also up at 6am regardless when he goes to bed

VisaGeezer · 29/12/2022 18:17

The time they wake varies (6.15 to 8.00).

Most days I'm finding I'm having to drag them out at 8.

I'm trying to drag it back.

Being on hol is not helping.

To allow for 10 to 12 hours sleep. So it would depend on how much sleep the child needs, wake up time, and time to fall asleep.

CaveMum · 29/12/2022 18:22

I think general rule of thumb is that if, at this age, you’re having to drag them out of bed they’re not getting enough sleep.

DS is 5.5 and goes up for a bath. At 6.45 and by the time we’ve wound down, read books, etc he’s usually asleep by 7.45. He gets up anytime between 6 and 7.

DD is almost 9. She’s allowed to read in bed till about 8.15 then it’s lights out. I usually have to wake her at 7.15 to get up for school as she takes an age to eat her breakfast and get dressed ready to leave the house at 8.30!

MassiveSalad22 · 29/12/2022 18:23

Around 7 for us - DS1 is now 7 and always has had trouble dropping off. DS2 is 5 now and often asks to go to bed and is always out in seconds. Both always up around 6. They’re all different!

harktheherold · 29/12/2022 18:23

Mine is asleep at 8.30/9pm, awake at 7.30/8am

Fridaysgirl17 · 29/12/2022 18:25

We go up between 6 30 -7, lights out at 7 30 & asleep by 8 no later,& I try stick to it during holidays. His teacher recommended to be asleep no later than 8 & I was already doing that
