To ask you what time a 5 yr old should go to bed

I've heard 7.30; is that normal?

We never manage it that early but I'm worried it's affecting her in school (esp towards home time).

What time do/did you have for your 5 yr olds?

Thank you

Oh and there is a big window of "should", it depends on the child. One person can not say what time your child "should" go to bed without knowing them very well and their routine, even then it's so personal.

FilthyforFirth · 29/12/2022 19:14

DS5 is in bed for 630, and occasionally 6pm. I appreciate this probably isnt normal, but he gets very tired. He is usually awake around 7. Can be 15 mins or so either way.

Personally I think anything past 8pm is far too late for a 5 year old. Especially during term time.

Notanotherone6 · 29/12/2022 19:22

On a school night we try for 8pm, but often it's 8:30pm or even going up to 9pm. On a weekend/holiday, more likely 9:30-10pm.

Hunkydory99 · 29/12/2022 19:24

Mine 5.5 year old is usually in bed by 6:30. She’s a perpetual early riser and her mood and behaviour is massively effected by her levels of tiredness so she needs to be early to bed. She’s usually up between 6/6:30

MeinKraft · 29/12/2022 19:36

In bed for 8, stories and general farting about for half an hour, sleeping by 8.30-9 usually.
Later in holidays though, I am for sleeping by half 9.

PopUpMoon · 29/12/2022 19:37

6YO is in bed by 7pm at the latest. She is dropped at the childminders at 7:30am and collected at 5:30pm. It’s a very long day and she needs the sleep.

Vavazoom · 29/12/2022 19:42

My almost 5 year old goes to bed at 7 and usually wakes between 6.30 and 7am. I’ll be keeping that bedtime as long as I possibly can!

SkyLarkDescending · 29/12/2022 20:23

I've read that if you want to move your wake window earlier in the day you need to get up and expose yourself to early morning light very soon after waking. So get out early in the garden or for a walk. Or at this time of year, turn on bright lights inside the house.

Conversely, exposure to evening light does the opposite and moves the window later. So no going outside in the late afternoon, dim lighting, no screens in the evening before bed.

Obviously, it's easy to get into a cycle of moving later and later as you stay up later and need to sleep later in the morning. But it's mostly to do with light exposure and not just length of sleep.

PrincessesRUs · 29/12/2022 23:00

Mine is a night owl - asleep at 8.45 in term time and then up at 7.15ish

APurpleSquirrel · 29/12/2022 23:09

Head up to bed at 7pm, lights out between 7.45-8pm & usually asleep within 10-15mins. Wakes between 6.30-7.30am.
Can be later in the holidays.

BiasedBinding · 29/12/2022 23:12

Mine has never slept 12 hours, usually 10-11. Falls asleep around 7.30-8pm and wakes at 6-6.30am

mumarooni · 29/12/2022 23:12

Ours is bath at 6.15-30ish, then into bed for stories, and lights out at 7. When she is tired she's asleep in moments and sleeps til 7-7.30. when she's wound up or less tired she can still be awake (listening to story tapes) until 8pm. Then we have a trickier morning the next day as have to wake her to be ready for school.

Changechangychange · 29/12/2022 18:01

Depends on what time they get up? 5 year olds need 11-12 hours sleep, roughly. So, if they get up at 7am, they need to go to bed by 7-8pm. If they get up at 8am, 8-9pm bedtime is fine.

Is your child tired in the morning? Do they wake by themselves, or do you have to wake them up?

This. Mine is only 3 but I was looking the other day (figuring out how long I get to keep my evenings for 😂). This was the general consensus

SuperPup86 · 29/12/2022 23:20

In bed at 7.15 for a story then hopefully sleeping by 7.30/7.45 ish.

That's term time. It goes a bit to shit in school holidays though. Since Christmas he's been up until 10pm a couple of times and he'll likely see in New Year on Saturday - we have a house full coming and the boy hates to miss a party 😂

OfMark87 · 29/12/2022 23:26

Mine goes to bed at 8pm.
Any earlier and she just doesn't sleep. She gets up about 7:30am on average and is bouncing off the walls all day 😂
We've kept the normal bedtime through the holidays

Ireolu · 29/12/2022 23:28

Up at 8. After pjs teeth story in bed by 8:15/20. Up by half 7. Used to go to bed at half 7 she just spent a significant amount of time messing about noisily in her bedroom so we push it later.

GrohlOnAPole · 29/12/2022 23:28

DD went to bed at 7 when she was that age, asleep by 7.30

DS3 goes up at 6.30 and asleep by 7. Wakes about 7.30 ish.

DD7 goes up at 7.30 and asleep by 8. Wakes about 7 ish.

neither cope well with later nights and get very grumpy! We get home about 6 ish so the evening can be very rushed to get them into bed.

Fabuleuse · 29/12/2022 23:29

Mine had lights out at 10.30pm tonight! He's been sleeping until after 10am some mornings. Need to claw it back for school resuming. 8pm is the aim then but it's a bit hit and miss...

Caterina99 · 29/12/2022 23:32

DD is 5, bedtime is 7ish, usually asleep by 7.30. She’s normally up around 6.30.

Legallypinkish · 29/12/2022 23:32

We never had set bedtimes but my younger two were usually asleep by 7.30/8pm at that age.

Chickpea17 · 29/12/2022 23:33

My almost 5 year old goes to sleep around 7/7:30pm and wakes around 6/7am

RewildingAmbridge · 29/12/2022 23:34

DS is 4 lights out by 7 gets usually also been 7:15 and 7:20pm, gets up between 7&8 am. I don't see this changing in the next 6-9 months and when he starts full time school I expect he'll be even more tired.

AzureOrchid · 29/12/2022 23:34

Between 7-730 on school nights
Sleep 12 hours , so up at 730 am

WandaWonder · 29/12/2022 23:35

I think 7ish from memory, he never seemed tired the next day if later, he sometimes took ages to get to sleep though

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2022 23:36

In bed by 7 for a story, lights out at the very latest at half past.
