To ask you what time a 5 yr old should go to bed

I've heard 7.30; is that normal?

We never manage it that early but I'm worried it's affecting her in school (esp towards home time).

What time do/did you have for your 5 yr olds?

Thank you

Mine is 4 but sleeps 7.30ish until 6. If he's had a nap in the car it's 9pm 🙃

Athenen0ctua · 29/12/2022 18:27

At 5, DS needed 10 hours sleep. The school was a few minutes walk away so he didn't need to be up until 7:30, so asleep by 9:30, so bed by 9 at the latest, though usually 8:30.

Thinkbiglittleone · 29/12/2022 18:29

Our 5 year old is in bed at 18.30 asleep by 19.00

Cactuslove · 29/12/2022 18:29

My 4.5 yr old is in bed at 6.30 asleep for 7 and my 2 yr old is in bed at 6 asleep for 6.30. Both up between 6-7am. Have to do this as I'm a single parent and need the time in the evenings to get things done/ have something to eat etc kids seem to be fine with this routine though

harktheherold · 29/12/2022 18:23

Mine is asleep at 8.30/9pm, awake at 7.30/8am

Same with my DD.

BibbyDarling · 29/12/2022 18:31

Mine is in bed for 6:45-7pm and asleep 7:15-7:30ish. Wakes happily between 6-7am xox

runforyourdog · 29/12/2022 18:33

Mine gets up between 6.30 and 7 on school days, aim for 8pm asleep but often a bit later.

Everything gets pushed back a bit in holiday.

riotlady · 29/12/2022 18:35

DD is 4.5, we start bedtime routine at 7, lights out at 7.30, usually asleep by 8

BeautifulWar · 29/12/2022 18:44

Depends on the child, really. Does your wake up tired or reluctant to get up? If not, then making bedtime earlier will mean getting up earlier!

ellesbellesxxx · 29/12/2022 18:45

My 5.5 year olds go to bed at 7, usually asleep by 7:15 then wake usually at 6 (this week it’s been 7!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!)

Legrandetraitor · 29/12/2022 18:48

Dinner 5, up at 5.30 for playing upstairs and bathtime. Stories at 6-6.30pm and in bed with his clock that reads additional stories 630-6.45. He’s always fast asleep by 7pm. Generally he’s awake at 6ish (no matter what time he goes to bed).

nancydroo · 29/12/2022 18:50

7:30 is fine

Catterpillarwithconverse · 29/12/2022 18:51

7:30 on a school night. 8:30 otherwise.

Marblessolveeverything · 29/12/2022 18:51

I admire anyone who can manage the early bed times. Given I always worked full time by the time they were picked up at creche at 6 /630 got home, food, homework, reading etc it was eight at the earliest.

Thankfully they both managed to bounce out of the bed at seven every morning.

EcoCustard · 29/12/2022 18:52

Dc3 is 5 and goes to bed 7-7.30pm on a school night and wakes at 7-7.30am. She stays up later on Friday/Saturday. She would sleep in longer if I let her.

tillyandmilly · 29/12/2022 18:53

Too early! No need to be in bed 6.30 pm - 7.30-8pm is the average time for a 5 year old bed time

WhoopItUp · 29/12/2022 18:55

Bed at 7 and up at 7 here. Lots of my DC’s friends seem to go a lot later. Mine definitely needs the sleep!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/12/2022 18:55

I would put my DC to bed based on amount of sleep needed and the time we get up in the morning.

The time they wake varies (6.15 to 8.00).

Most days I'm finding I'm having to drag them out at 8.

That's a sign they need to go to bed earlier how do you get up dressed and to school if they don't get up until 8

There’s no such thing as “too early” though, is there? It’s utterly subjective and the implied judgment is unhelpful. If a child is sleeping 5 mins after their head hits the pillow then it’s the right time for them.

oddwellingtonboots · 29/12/2022 18:57

Bath at 7, then straight to bed after that, so could be between 7.25 and 8pm depending on how long he swims for.

Wakes up between 6am and 7pm.

Born Nov 2017.

SouperNoodle · 29/12/2022 18:58

We aim for 7 but it's more often 7:30-8 than not

TheMagicDeckchair · 29/12/2022 19:02

My just turned 5 year old probably goes to sleep around 9pm and wakes around 7.30am. It could sometimes be as early as 7.30pm if she’s had a tiring day and it was nearly 10pm last night.

She has always been low sleep needs, even as a baby.

It's 4 mins away.

But yeah it's a rush sometimes.

Tillyandmilly* I don’t believe 8pm is the average for a 5 year old at all !

My 6 year old is in bed for 7pm mostly and his slightly older siblings are ready for bed chilling in their rooms/reading at 7pm too.

if you have to rush in the mornings OP then DC must be tired and needs to go to bed earlier (work/dinner etc permitting !)
