abortion illegal

Posting here for the traffic, im so sorry

Just found out I am pregnant. I am an expat living abroad (Turkey) and although on paper abortion is still legal, I have found out that no clinic or hospital or doctor will perform one without a medical reason to do so. So basically abortions are legal however we cannot access them.

I am 6 weeks pregnant and really do not want to continue with this. I have looked online at travelling to the UK for one however they are around 500GBP which I really cannot afford :( Although I am financially well considering where I live, once my wage and money is converted to pounds I am considered poor. I am terribly stuck and now even considering keeping a baby I am not ready for at all.

Any advice please

Get a credit card or get a loan and get on the plane. It’s your only option.

Hello everyone

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong.

We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon. Flowers

MintyFreshOne · 29/12/2022 09:37

OP do exhaust all local options. It could be too risky to accept medication from abroad. It’s not illegal to give an elective abortion so if indeed someone local is willing, then that seems best

picklesandtea · 29/12/2022 05:38

Is it the travel you can't afford or are you saying you'd have to pay for the abortion once you got there?

The op would not be entitled to nhs treatment

Are you british and registered with a gp practice? If you are and have a uk address (on paper) I don't see how they'd know you're an expat to be honest.

I'm also an expat but my GP/NHS profile has had me registered at my parents address since the dawn of time.

If the above doesn't apply then I'd contact these people abortion.eu/#services as a matter of urgency.

You do realise this is illegal? We lived in France before Brexit and were horrified how many Brits lived there and basically kept a U.K. address (friend or family member) thereby avoiding health insurance in France. Brits complain about health tourism…the majority though are Brits living abroad who have no entitlement to health care in U.K. but use it anyway.

diddl · 29/12/2022 09:48

I'm also an expat but my GP/NHS profile has had me registered at my parents address since the dawn of time.

So when they ask if you records are correct you just lie?

So do you make appointments & fly back??

Surely if you don't use them that's blocking a space for someone who wants to register but can't?

Lovesnowforever · 29/12/2022 09:52

Try the countries like bulgaria… also I googled and I didn’t know it’s illegal in Germany..

I don't think that it is illegal as such in Germany-it has to be within a certain time & there must be counselling beforehand.

LaLuz7 · 29/12/2022 10:01

Abortion by pill in a Romanian private clinic is around 150 pounds tops.
Air BnB for a night for as little as 40-50 pounds.

Charge the travel expenses to a credit card if you must, but there's definitely options abroad

DetalMetector · 29/12/2022 10:02

Good advice thank you MNLiv

Please may I respectfully ask that MN considers having a sticky with email addresses and phone numbers of reputable abortion advice and early abortion pill provider websites like Women On Waves and Women Help Women etc? so that posters in exactly OP’s situation, living in countries that might block such websites, can at least then see legitimate contact details for sources of advice, directly for themselves?

The sticky, just sharing already publicly available contact information in the UK, could be added to eg the Expat and the pregnancy choices sections of MN for example. Thank you. Flowers

But it's us tax paying immigrants ruing NHS😂 innit

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/12/2022 10:06

@diddl and @Solonge if I knew someone who was doing that, living abroad for many years, and keeping a UK address to USE our NHS, I would report them in the blink of an eye.

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/12/2022 10:10

Do you have facts/official stats to back this up? Or are you just making it up, to have a little swipe at the people who complain about people moving to the UK for a few weeks and using they facilities they and their families have paid for all their lives (as soon as they move here?)

Blowthemandown · 29/12/2022 10:22

@Eyylaa87 there is a very good website with EU countries info, for example France which is far cheaper www.abortion-clinics.eu/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/France_CB12AB72.doc-Pub_AbortionlegislationinEuropeIPPFEN_Feb2009.pdf

purpledalmation · 29/12/2022 10:40

Surely it's cheaper to take out a loan to have the termination in the UK than to have to pay the costs of having and raising a child?

CoteDAzur · 29/12/2022 10:43

This is crazy. Turkey is not some medieval village atop a mountain cut off from the world. Of course there are many hospitals, private clinics, and doctors who will abort an unwanted pregnancy, especially in the three largest cities - İstanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.

OP - After 12 years in Turkey, you must have some Turkish female friends. Ask one of them to do an internet search for you to find a clinic nearby where you can have an abortion. If you don't speak any Turkish, ask her to come with you.

You are a "heathen" non-Muslim so the conservative establishment doesn't care what you do. You also have the money to go private. There is no reason whatsoever why you shouldn't be able to get an abortion in Turkey until 10 week.

Take a deep breath and confide in a Turkish woman you are friendly with. She will sort it out for you.

Lovesnowforever · 29/12/2022 11:03

@diddl
i read this and it says only if serious health reasons they would perform it.

Lovesnowforever · 29/12/2022 11:06

@CoteDAzur OP said that she contacted many hospitals in those 3 cities but all said no.

Itawapuddytat · 29/12/2022 11:19

Check the Romanian clinics, abortions are legal there within the first 12 weeks and it's probably cheaper to get them and to travel to the clinic than travelling to Greece or UK.

Zombiemum1946 · 29/12/2022 11:38

Intrest free credit cards, bank loans, borrow what you can't pull together in cash. Transfer the balance on credit cards before the intrest free period is about to end. I would think the cost of holidays a couple of times a year would cover the repayment costs.

Exactly what the Brexit/Tory voters believe...and the right wing press would have everyone believing. Im a nurse...the number of ex pat Brits who come over for cataract surgery....giving their kids address...and those requiring new hips etc is so common. The NHS has always been lazy at chasing people not entitled to NHS treatment for payment. There is this entitlement....I am a Brit and I paid in for years. We were Brits...a doctor and nurse who moved to France...and legally informed the NHS we were moving to the EU....and then organising our health insurance. Too many ex pats have an entitlement that is mind blowing.

VisaGeezer · 29/12/2022 11:53

I think the lady who offered to send the pills has discovered they're out of date, but just to say I wouldn't rely on receiving any pills through customs etc.

Not Turkey but the only time I've not had a parcel be delivered to a foreign woman I used to send packages to, was when she wanted some pills (just supplements) she couldn't get locally - never got the package, I never heard anything.

I think it might be common for customs to trash pills.
