abortion illegal

Posting here for the traffic, im so sorry

Just found out I am pregnant. I am an expat living abroad (Turkey) and although on paper abortion is still legal, I have found out that no clinic or hospital or doctor will perform one without a medical reason to do so. So basically abortions are legal however we cannot access them.

I am 6 weeks pregnant and really do not want to continue with this. I have looked online at travelling to the UK for one however they are around 500GBP which I really cannot afford :( Although I am financially well considering where I live, once my wage and money is converted to pounds I am considered poor. I am terribly stuck and now even considering keeping a baby I am not ready for at all.

Any advice please

Try the Abortion Support Network. They don't specifically cover Turkey but may offer advice.

At 6 weeks you should be able to get the pills which should be cheaper? Are they legal in Turkey? If so would a private appointment help?
You can try contacting Abortion Support Network. They don't have Turkey on the list of countries but still may be able to advice.
Good luck! I'm sorry you're in a such difficult situation. I hope you'll get help soon.

JustTryingToBeUseful · 29/12/2022 05:51

contact www.asn.org.uk/
Turkey isn't in the list of their priority countries but they do say "other countries on a case by case basis" and the fact that you are an expat citizen of the uk may carry some weight.

Headoutofplace · 29/12/2022 05:51

glittermoomoo · 29/12/2022 05:49

I think they only prescribe them for the person who has the appointment.

Sketchy I know but thought maybe the OP may know someone in UK willing to say they're for them so they can get them and post them on.

So you are suggesting someone lies about needing them which results in a falsification of medical records ? This puts the practitioner who provided them in an invidious position.
Not only that the person who lied could be prosecuted see here:

Headoutofplace · 29/12/2022 05:59

I don't know Turkey at all but what women's organisations or support organisations are there, they may have more knowledge of any hospitals/doctors that do agree to do abortions?

I'm not saying it would be legit but I'd be prepared to do it for a sister/best friend etc if they were in that scenario. And that article is a totally different situation! They were trying to secretly force an abortion on someone who didn't want one!

Sketchy is an understatement

That's a good job, otherwise you'd be aiding and abetting a criminal offence with serious consequences for the person concerned.

MintyFreshOne · 29/12/2022 06:04

You are misinformed, Turkey isn't always in MENA by classification. Having said that

This is very political and I won’t get into it (and literally no one says MENAT) but have to say it surprised me as I knew abortion was legal on paper in Turkey, but the reality is a bit different

Pothoswithasparkle · 29/12/2022 06:05

Have you checked bulgaria. They have quite a high abortion rate iirc so... Shouldn't be a problem.

Also, for future international movers. Always have money aside to travel in emergency back to your native country or elsewhere if anything happens.

steff13 · 29/12/2022 06:07

This article from The Guardian from July says you can get one privately for 1000 lira, which it says is the equivalent of £153. Have you looked into that option?

It is legal, but in the past few years it has become impossible to obtain one

This organisation will send the pills abroad. Discounted cost is £415 (if you can’t afford the full cost and aren’t eligible for NHS). Still a lot of money but at least you wouldn’t have to pay for travel costs

Wheretheskyisblue · 29/12/2022 06:15

Have you tried the abortion advice network?
www.asn.org.uk/ They say they can provide financial assistance but not syre if this is limited to EU.

Also try consult.womenhelp.org/get-abortion-pills?z_language=en fir access to abortion pills.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/12/2022 06:15

You can't risk trying to procure an illegal termination. You just can't. The consequences for you if found out would be catastrophic, even if you didn't end up needing emergency treatment due to complications.

Zanatdy · 29/12/2022 06:19

ClarathecrosseyedLioness · 29/12/2022 05:46

@Zanatdy I don’t want to suggest anything illegal (have no idea what rules are on this) but could someone get the pills in the U.K. and get it couriered to you?

No GP/Doctor is going to risk their Registration for such a course of action.

I didn’t mean a GP. I’m sure there are ways to get them.

Nothing legal or safe

MintyFreshOne · 29/12/2022 06:25

Is there an active expat message board? Perhaps post anonymously there and see if anyone has more relevant advice. Someone else must have experienced this situation too!

Well if I was desperate not to have a baby I didn’t want I’d try anything. If the OP has no money to travel to another country then what’s the other options? Might not be the most sensible option but if I was desperate I’d start looking at all options.

ClarathecrosseyedLioness · 29/12/2022 06:26

Yeah, sure. You can buy anything off the internet including machetes and bomb-making equipment.🙄
The whole point of using a recognised medical service for an abortion is to make sure that there is some kind of back-up in case of complications.

Yes, I’d be afraid the local authorities might seize the package and prosecute. Too risky.

Good luck

RogersOrganismicProcess · 29/12/2022 06:35

I lived there for ten years and knew many women who had terminations and spoke about it freely. The only stipulation was that both the mother and father had to agree if you were going to a private hospital. Are you sure the medical
thing isn’t just for devlet?
