Need medical attention or standard behaviour

My dc is 12 months.

Started feeling unwell just before xmas.

He's been sleeping for long stretches on and off all day. Very unlike them. When awake they are just crying inconsolably. Thought maybe teething plus a cold but starting to question it.

Eyes are stuck together and red raw and swollen. Nose blocked. Hot to touch.

Been giving calpol. It's been a week now no improvement. Is this standard behaviour when baby has a cold or would you seek gp? Not experienced this before.

I know after Xmas today is going to be mental trying to get an appointment

probalby need a GP appointment

Socksey · 28/12/2022 09:14

That sounds like a bit more than a light cold.... I'd call NHS direct if I were you.
Keep giving lots of fluids in the meantime
Look after yourselves

BigBunkers · 28/12/2022 09:14

I would absolutely seek medical help, yes.

LakieLady · 28/12/2022 09:17

Yes, 111, but take his temperature so you can tell them what it is.

Is he wetting his nappies? Keeping him hydrated is really important.

DairyDiary · 28/12/2022 09:18

It depends what you've tried.

  • wipe the eyes from the inside (by the nose) outwards (towards the ear) with cooled boiled water and a cleaned, ironed muslin
  • use a baby saline spray for their nose as needed
  • calpol as much as permitted, frequently
  • teething salts and baby bonjela as required
If nothing improves after 2-3 days of that regime, I'd get a GP appointment. It does sound like a cold and probably a bit of conjunctivitis potentially combined with teething - so the GP won't be able to do anything more than these things, so no point going unless these don't work and you need better guidance.
TheRookie · 28/12/2022 09:28

GPs are open, if you're worried, call them. Don't call 111.

lifeinthehills · 28/12/2022 09:29

Medical attention. Maybe conjunctivitis? That's miserable.

Overthebow · 28/12/2022 09:30

What’s his temperature?

PeppermintChoc · 28/12/2022 09:30

If he’s not improved after a week definitely see a GP, even if there’s no individual element that’s alarming I think that’s too long not to see any improvement. I usually give a temp 3-4 days and if it’s not improving then see a GP. I’ve never done that and found it was nothing it’s always been something bacterial.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/12/2022 10:03

Yes definitely for a baby, I am surprised you've left it this long tbh.

Drs are usually pretty good at getting baby's seen.

tiredpuppymum · 28/12/2022 14:36

Yes of course! You need to call your gp now.
Poor baby. It sounds like he has conjunctivitis.
