To be worried for the woman living in the flat above me

I live in a flat. About an hour ago, in the early hours of morning I could hear a man aggresively yelling at a woman in a foreign language, and the woman crying and screaming in response in terror, with banging. They have a baby, who rarely cries. I phoned 999 who attended, but because the tenants didnt answer the door, there was nothing they could do. Ive been told to phone back if it starts again and that ive done the right thing. They took my details and left.

I spoke to the woman, she was going out. I asked if she heard anything and she said no, but also said theres shouting all the time in the the building and just to ignore it. Which doesnt make any sense. I asked again if they heard anything anf they said no. So I just left it at that and rung 101 to update who are coming to my flat ive explained I dont need that but they said they have to as its a domestic situation.

Do you mean you spoke to the woman who you're worried about?

Yes

I think you've done just about everything you can then. If you speak to her again, maybe ask if she's ok, rather than whether she heard anything.

Hopefully the police will have better advice when they come back.

I am sorry but you went around it the wrong way. You don’t go up to someone you suspect have been abused and ask them if they heard something like shouting. What do you think she will answer to that?
Your question seems intrusive and she will think you are only asking it because you are irritated by the shouting noises and not because you are concerned about someone’s safety and want to help.
You have to approach it in a totally different manner that will put her at ease. If you are not skilled at that, ask someone else who will know how to do that.
