Fever for 6 days is a bit worrying?

My sister (34) has been visiting for Christmas and we’ve all had flu-like symptoms for about 10 days. She started with symptoms 6 days ago including fevers over 39 with rigors, and they don’t seem to be settling. She also has a chesty cough and can’t get off the sofa/bed. The rest of us had fevers for 3 days and that got better, just the fatigue, cough, etc still going. She’s a super fit fell runner and is rarely ill. I’ve phoned 111 who said it’ll be a call back in 6 hours but I’m wondering if she could be getting septic. Or have others had a fever for this long with flu?

I'd be quite concerned about pneumonia. I'm a nurse for background, although not emergency medicine. I would keep a close eye on her. Keep an eye out for signs of sepsis... reduced Consciousness, confusion. Sounds like a secondary bacterial infection is likely.

Covid test?

Greenleaves20 · 28/12/2022 12:48

Thanks @Theordinary. Got a Gp appointment this afternoon so hopefully get some antibiotics. Covid negative!

Good news... I'm sure she'll pick up quickly once she starts them. She might take several weeks to get over it though. Respiratory infections really take it out of you. Lots of rest needed. Wishing you all the best.

I’d definitely be going to the doctor at this point. Glad you’re getting her seen.

Thanks. Swabs for flu and covid taken but dr couldn’t find a source of infection so no antibiotics given. She’s still spiking temps and shivering so I guess we will await swab results tomorrow and take it from there…

I had something similar, many years ago. It started off with symptoms like flu, but it was actually a kidney infection.
