To ask who TF is looking after the kids…

For Jude Law in The Holiday?

He’s a widower, a single dad of 2 primary aged girls, and he goes out on the piss and makes a last minute unannounced decision to stay at his sisters’ then the very next morning invites his shag to dinner with friends in the pub that night.

Who is looking after the kids?! A widow with 2 children would be called a slapper for doing this and someone on MN would probably call 101 on her even though they know it’s just a film.

Im also calling it that Miles, Jack Black’s character, is a prick. He’s overbearing with his girlfriend and bossy - when he’s trying to get into Amanda’s mansion (BTW do movie trailer makers really afford these houses in their mid-30’s?!) Maggie his GF is on the phone and he says “Come on Maggie this is the important flute section” (referring to the music he composed playing on their car radio). This is meant to demonstrate that she’s unsupportive and rude. However if my DH interrupted my phone conversation and demanded I listened to his shit jingle he’d be getting told to fuck right off. We are meant to believe that the wonderful Kate Winslet in her lovely character of Iris falls for this inept unattractive buffoon when Rufus Sewell offers it to her on a plate! Bollocks

I may be overthinking it all - I’m ill and so can’t sleep and I’m watching easy-watch TV Grin

PS Cary Grant is not from Surrey. That is all

I read an article about the film the other day, where the writer (or director? Can't remember which) said it had a darker meaning. That the Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz characters both died at the start of the film (Kate sticking her head in the gas oven, Cameron having trouble breathing when arguing with her boyfriend) and the film was about them having to find resolution to the problems in their love lives/hearts, being in some sort of limbo before being able to more on. And the old screen writer guy was a part of it too - also having to overcome his isolation and career hang ups before passing on. Quite probably a load of bollocks, but I found it interesting to think about the film in a different way, other than the sugary sweetness it has on a superficial level.

In that case the writer (or director) is a bit of an idiot, since you haven't been able to kill yourself by sticking your head in the oven since the 1970s.

You would never get a female equivalent of Jack Black paired with a beautiful actor.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 28/12/2022 13:09

We had this conversation the other day. I assume the girls grandparents, maybe aunties and uncles live close by so are providing the childcare while Jude shags his way through Surrey.

IKR!

It happens with Adam Sandler too. A man who is, at best, not ugly and also unable to tuck his shirt into his trousers, having the likes of Jennifer Anniston, Kate Beckinsale, Salma Hayek, Drew Barrymore and out less gorgeous women falling over themselves to be with him. As if!

Or she would take her glasses off and have a make over undergo some amazing transformation

Yes because woe betide a man stoops to date a woman with glasses and frizzy hair 🤣🤣

Honestly, no-one giving a shit about the dog bothered me. As did virtually everything about Jack Black. The way he held Maggie’s hand at the start when she clearly wanted to pull away. His ridiculous beseeching looks.

Yes why even bother with the dog storyline?! Was it meant to make Kate Winlset look more provincial and adorable? When I had a dog if I left her with some stranger to fuck of for 2 weeks last minute she’d have turned her back to me for a good month when I returned.

Also, there’s no way you can get off with a man without the dog jumping all over you.

Jack Black just comes across as creepy. Like one of those ugly blokes who are grateful to not have to spend their days ordering blow up dolls so over indulge their uncomfortable girlfriend

And while we’re at it, why was Iris walking past the Houses of Parliament? Telegraph offices are on Fleet Street, Surely with a 40 minute commute from say Waterloo you’d get the tube to Waterloo rather than that unnecessary walk?

I may be over thinking this.

Jack Black is totally wrong in this. Definitely ick. If they wanted a quirky not obvious hunk they should have gone for someone like Owen Wilson - now he’d be lovely for Kate (or me)…

Now there you're wrong. Owen Wilson is an obvious dreamboat 😍😍😍

It's not just that Jack Black is not visually obvious looking, it's that his character is totally ick.

Plus the whole plot with Eli Wallach is a total cringe . Lots of phone scrolling and muting went on with lots of the KW plot. 🤮

Visually gorgeous

QueenSmartypants · 28/12/2022 22:26

There's a dog??

Catastrophejane · 28/12/2022 22:29

Stardustkid · 28/12/2022 00:02

It’s Surrey!

Same thing- posh, twee part of Southern England.

not sure a poor journalist can afford a posh part of Surrey either..

Catastrophejane · 28/12/2022 23:15

Shadope · 28/12/2022 00:26

christ, my ex likes to insinuate I’m a slapper if I’m staying over at my long term boyfriend’s house!

so nothing like a light-hearted thread to continue that attitude eh?

also my issue wasn’t originally with the slapper comment (as only an idiot would say that) but more around the fact that as a single parent you should always be with your kids rather than having a social life. The title is literally called ‘wtf are the kids’.

stating an opinion then saying it is ‘not for the perpetually offended’ is one step away from many of the old racist: misogynistic rhetoric

But the ‘WTF are the kids?’ is a practical question- not a value judgement!

My sister used to live in the village where this terrible movie was filmed.
Not very interesting fact - Kate Winslet's cottage is not real.

It is though! Look what just came up on my phone!

It is and it isn't.

The one in the film was a set piece modelled on the one in the magazine.

Yes but definitely based on the real thing. Even if the inside is totally different!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/12/2022 00:01

Every time I watch it ( yes, I know ...) I'm far more concerned about the dog than the kids.

I can't bear Jack Black and Rufus is a god. I don't care what a tosser his character is, there is no contest. I'd choose Rufus every time.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 29/12/2022 08:01

Agree on so many counts. Watched it recently (yes it's shit but it's law in our house) and pitied the beautiful Winslet ending up with Black.

IrisCosyCottage · 29/12/2022 12:41

I love the Eli Wallach plot. Without it Kate wouldn't have been able to kick cheating, lying, scumbug Rufus to the kerb. Not so she could get with Jack Black - but so she could centre herself in her relationship and life. It's one of the parts I love about The Holiday. Life, society, lots of romcoms tell women to change, to move, to make themselves smaller to fit into their partners' lives. The Holiday says women should be the main characters in their lives.

Nicewarmfeet · 29/12/2022 12:59

Love this thread I always think about the unmentioned dog!! Cameron Diaz's character doesn't seem like the type who would have poo bags in the pockets of her 4 fancy coats. Who was going to look
after the dog when she decided she was going home after 24 hours?

When she does her rant about how her and Jude laws characters won't work I always think -yes!! You're totally right!! He'd cheat on her the first week she was back in the USA. Fab for a fling but not worth the hassle long term no matter how much he cries.

I liked the plot too and feel they rammed in a chemistry-less romance because maybe they thought women wouldn’t watch a lovely relationship develop unless it was sexual.

I do think his character was rather deluded though he didn’t know Cary Grant 😂

Absolutely - it could have been a great opportunity to show how LDR with someone you met last week are BS and there is a grown up way to part on good terms. Then The Woman Who Never Cries was suddenly collected on the road that, the week before, the driver couldn’t drive down, and bloody cries. “Graaaammmm Graaaaammmm. Let’s spend Noo Years togetherrrrrr”. I expected better from you Cameron.
