To ask who TF is looking after the kids…

For Jude Law in The Holiday?

He’s a widower, a single dad of 2 primary aged girls, and he goes out on the piss and makes a last minute unannounced decision to stay at his sisters’ then the very next morning invites his shag to dinner with friends in the pub that night.

Who is looking after the kids?! A widow with 2 children would be called a slapper for doing this and someone on MN would probably call 101 on her even though they know it’s just a film.

Im also calling it that Miles, Jack Black’s character, is a prick. He’s overbearing with his girlfriend and bossy - when he’s trying to get into Amanda’s mansion (BTW do movie trailer makers really afford these houses in their mid-30’s?!) Maggie his GF is on the phone and he says “Come on Maggie this is the important flute section” (referring to the music he composed playing on their car radio). This is meant to demonstrate that she’s unsupportive and rude. However if my DH interrupted my phone conversation and demanded I listened to his shit jingle he’d be getting told to fuck right off. We are meant to believe that the wonderful Kate Winslet in her lovely character of Iris falls for this inept unattractive buffoon when Rufus Sewell offers it to her on a plate! Bollocks

I may be overthinking it all - I’m ill and so can’t sleep and I’m watching easy-watch TV Grin

PS Cary Grant is not from Surrey. That is all

Why did Cameron Diaz's character take so many coats on holiday? She wears about 4 different coats in that film, are we meant to believe they (and all her other clothes) all fitted in that one suitcase?

I agree that Iris would never fall for the Jack Black character but Rufus Sewell is an absolute shit in that film.

Also, I want Jude Law's house. Everyone goes on about Kate Winslet's cottage but I couldn't cope with that teeny bath.

@MoonahSton we are of one mind. I came on to say she wears FOUR coats in that film (and we didn't even see it from the beginning). FOUR coats in Surrey. Who takes four coats on holiday?

Whatifthegrassisblue · 28/12/2022 00:41

I always thought Kate Winslet deserved someone much more attractive, it seemed really unfair

Timetochangetheoil · 28/12/2022 00:45

I too love this film but also get so annoyed with it…when Jude Law lists all the things he does “I sew, I read parenting books, I shop for tutus in my spare time,” etc as if all these things are so completely beneath him when really he is just being a parent like millions of people do every day? Like if his wife was alive would he not be doing those things? Would it all be up to
her…
I also find Graham and Jasper are really similar in how they talk and look…which is a bit creepy considering one is Kate’s lover the other is her brother 🙈😂
I love Jack Black though I will not tolerate this dissing of him he rocks 😄

HeathenPlayingHouse · 28/12/2022 00:45

Now that I think about it, shouldn't another important question be- if Jude Law is shagging Cameron Diaz by night and wining and dining her by day, who's looking after the cow in his backyard? 🤣

reallyneedtosleep · 28/12/2022 00:49

Love the film except Jack Black.. awful casting , he gives me The Ick. I think he genuinely thinks he's quirkily charming and cute. He's just 🤮. And I agree with pp, his character is a selfish controlling prick.

BradfordGirl · 28/12/2022 00:51

I agree Jack Black is nowhere near enough attractive for Kate Winslet. I don't think he is attractive enough for me, and I am no Kate Winslet.

slideintomxas · 28/12/2022 01:05

Jack Black is totally wrong in this. Definitely ick. If they wanted a quirky not obvious hunk they should have gone for someone like Owen Wilson - now he’d be lovely for Kate (or me)…

I'm a widower with 2 young-ish primary aged DC and I have thought the same, made me laugh your post, I don't know where I'd find the time! :D

I feel like it would be an AIBU post.

”My son in law/son is a widower and for 3 nights on the trot has asked me and DH to babysit last minute because he wants to take some woman he’s literally just met out on a load of dates. AIBU to think he’s a piss taker?”

Cary Grant is from Bristol so over 100miles out!

The old man says ‘Cart Grant was from Surrey. He told me that’. I’d be thinking you bloody liar.

How are you all going to cope when the 2nd one comes out? Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement to do it.

I’m going to think it’s terrible but also probably enjoy every minute Grin

.Your Maggie point is ridiculous, so I’m not commenting.😇

The kids were at grandparents- however…. THE DOG!!!!

Why didn’t the Jude Law character look after the dog?

He’s too busy lolling about with his mates at the pub 😂

OP posts:
Wetblanket78 · 28/12/2022 01:09

I'm pretty sure he said the children's maternal grandparents have them. Ya know the biological children's mother's parents.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 28/12/2022 01:10

Shadope · 28/12/2022 00:26

christ, my ex likes to insinuate I’m a slapper if I’m staying over at my long term boyfriend’s house!

so nothing like a light-hearted thread to continue that attitude eh?

also my issue wasn’t originally with the slapper comment (as only an idiot would say that) but more around the fact that as a single parent you should always be with your kids rather than having a social life. The title is literally called ‘wtf are the kids’.

stating an opinion then saying it is ‘not for the perpetually offended’ is one step away from many of the old racist: misogynistic rhetoric

Dear god what aren’t you getting - I didn’t call anyone a slapper. I’m saying that would be the perception.

You can’t say “Oh yes single women are judged” but then cry about it when I point out single women would be judged. I’m not saying it’s right they’d be considered a slapper, just that they would.

The car music in the scene at the gate wasn't composed by Jack Black's character, he tells Kate Winslet that it was Ennio Morricone. Totally missing the point of the thread, I know 😂

And Miles was an absolute dream compared to King of twats Jasper.

That’s even worse then! “Oi you get off the phone so you can listen to a piece of music that I’M interested in”.

Id be off cheating with that sexy actor as well 😂

Dotcheck Omg yes, Kate comes home and that poor dog's been on its own all day! And then she houseswaps and leaves it behind! Shock Zonder I live in a 200 year old house with stone walls and there is no plaster on a lot of the walls on the inside. It is a thing. In fact my house looks very much like the house in this film only it's on a lane not a fake house in a field.
No one has mentioned so far the fact that Jude's character is called GRAHAM (and she still shags him).

yes why call his character a name that an American can’t pronounce. “Hi Grammm”

I read an article about the film the other day, where the writer (or director? Can't remember which) said it had a darker meaning. That the Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz characters both died at the start of the film (Kate sticking her head in the gas oven, Cameron having trouble breathing when arguing with her boyfriend) and the film was about them having to find resolution to the problems in their love lives/hearts, being in some sort of limbo before being able to more on. And the old screen writer guy was a part of it too - also having to overcome his isolation and career hang ups before passing on. Quite probably a load of bollocks, but I found it interesting to think about the film in a different way, other than the sugary sweetness it has on a superficial level.

Jack Black must have friends high up. He is so badly cast in this film and they have no sexual chemistry.

If I made it all the way to limbo I like to think I’d be rewarded with someone fitter than Jack Black

Irl Kate Winslet's character wouldn't touch Jack Black's character with a bargepole. He is awful. And those little girls deserve better than Cameron Diaz.

jays · 28/12/2022 01:19

Always thought Miles was a right prick in that movie too.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 28/12/2022 01:19

I hate how movies always portray young children as super confident and precocious. When actually most young girls would probably think who the hell is this random American in our house, and go to their rooms rather than rummage in her bags.

Also why do they have cockney accents?

He so is.

Singing like an idiot in a video shop, taking other people’s good work and scatting along to it, thinking he’s funny and/or charming - what an annoying bastard. Then moaning about being a ‘nice guy’ how women don’t like nice guys like him. You just know that in 2022, Miles is on incel forums.

I told my boyfriend I was pregnant and he blocked me.
We were together for 2.5 years, had a pretty bad argument a few days prior to me telling him.
It's been 2 weeks of silent treatment from him and his whole family.
I am shocked 😲 I honestly just hope that he's scared but once he calms down and accepts it he will reach out?
I'm 31 he's 35. This Is his first child I have an 11 year old to a previous relationship.

Has anyone's ex came back when reality hit? I've stopped trying to contact him due to being met with silence.

Help 😭
