To ask who TF is looking after the kids…

For Jude Law in The Holiday?

He’s a widower, a single dad of 2 primary aged girls, and he goes out on the piss and makes a last minute unannounced decision to stay at his sisters’ then the very next morning invites his shag to dinner with friends in the pub that night.

Who is looking after the kids?! A widow with 2 children would be called a slapper for doing this and someone on MN would probably call 101 on her even though they know it’s just a film.

Im also calling it that Miles, Jack Black’s character, is a prick. He’s overbearing with his girlfriend and bossy - when he’s trying to get into Amanda’s mansion (BTW do movie trailer makers really afford these houses in their mid-30’s?!) Maggie his GF is on the phone and he says “Come on Maggie this is the important flute section” (referring to the music he composed playing on their car radio). This is meant to demonstrate that she’s unsupportive and rude. However if my DH interrupted my phone conversation and demanded I listened to his shit jingle he’d be getting told to fuck right off. We are meant to believe that the wonderful Kate Winslet in her lovely character of Iris falls for this inept unattractive buffoon when Rufus Sewell offers it to her on a plate! Bollocks

I may be overthinking it all - I’m ill and so can’t sleep and I’m watching easy-watch TV Grin

PS Cary Grant is not from Surrey. That is all

Jack Black must have friends high up. He is so badly cast in this film and they have no sexual chemistry.

He really does though. Jack Black is literally the least impressive person in his family.

His mother and brother are both literal genius’s.

My DD was desperate to watch it. One of my (many) complaints was that Kate Winslet character described herself as a neat freak. I'm completely not a neat freak but nothing about the cottage fitted that description.

And Cameron Diaz had to walk for allegedly ages down the lane in her stilettos dragging the suitcase ....and yet it was sufficiently near a station for Kate Winslet to regularly commute to London. And yes wtf to the drink driving. And why was it always snowing in Surrey...?

But it was OK for a mindless low concentration film to watch when eating cheese and biscuits and drinking wine

This.. miles down the drive to the house yet a daily commute to London was possible!
And that house was totally not a neat freaks.
😂

IrisCosyCottage · 28/12/2022 01:58

Iirc his parents are watching the girls. He explains that at one point.
Miles didn't compose the music in the car. It's by a proper composer and Maggie was on hold.
Rufus was a lying, cheating arse. All he was offering on a plate was unpaid proof-reading.
But I have no defence or explanation for Miles scatting or dancing or being unjustifiably over confident.
(I may have watched this film too many times to count).

namitynamechange · 28/12/2022 02:06

I think we all know the kind if responses I would get on this site if I posted asking if it was acceptable that I introduced my two very young children to a man I'd met three days ago who turned up on my doorstep because he'd been snooping on my conversations and believed my sons were in fact other men I'd been seeing. Let alone the massive impracticalities involved in even having the chance to randomly meet/sleep with said man anyway on a whim anyway.

IrisCosyCottage · 28/12/2022 02:11

I love that the two female characters have noticable careers and get to discuss them. And that there's no suggestion of Cameron throwing away her career for 2 children and a cow - sparkly pink sleep tent or not 😄
It's the only movie where I like Jude Law. I think he's perfectly cast.

JackBlacksScroodlyDoos · 28/12/2022 02:21

Sophie and Olivia are having a few days with their grandparents. Gives lone parent Jude a few days to let loose. No writing fail here, imo.

I absolutely adore Jack Black and find him really attractive. This movie might even be the vehicle for starting my crush on him.

Jude didn’t intend to have Cameron meet his daughters - it was an accident that it happened, but she turned up at his door, they met her, and what was he supposed to do?

kate could afford that cottage if she bought when she was young, maybe she got a helping hand from rich parents/grandparents/other relative.

IrisCosyCottage · 28/12/2022 02:30

I think we can safely assume Kate and Jude's parents are rich and helped with both house/cottage purchases.

emptythelitterbox · 28/12/2022 03:12

I love this movie.
There is no shortage of hideous men in hollywood who are cast as attractive love interests.

Interesting fact about Jack Black's mum.

She was an American aerospace engineer. She worked as an electrical engineer on the Minuteman missile, the science ground station for the Hubble Space Telescope, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, and the Apollo S.pace Program

Bubblegumpies · 28/12/2022 06:33

how is it possible that the Jude and Cameron characters spend all that time together falling in love and yet he doesn’t once mention the fact that he has two daughters…

isthismylifenow · 28/12/2022 06:54

I skipped watching it this year. I just couldn't bare to watch Cameron Diaz terrible acting, so it's going to every other Christmas.

I'm sure I only watched it because Jude Law is pretty fine, he distracts me from the awful plot line.

As for Jack Black, he seems exhausting. He always seems exhausting so I can't blame the film for this.

Oh and I'm a single mother too, and guess what.. . I'm not offended by a thing OP said, so be off to a non light hearted thread for the easily offended please.

Rufus Sewell broke her heart. Her telling him to piss off is one of the few good parts of the film

Fizbosshoes · 28/12/2022 07:56

Apart from mis-selling the fact she was a neat freak, why doesn't Kate Winslet even mention she had a dog....? What if Cameron Diaz was allergic? And why does no one take it for a walk?

And yes to the kids being really confident! They probably would have hid behind his leg instead of asking who she was.

ScissorsPaperStone · 28/12/2022 00:41

@MoonahSton we are of one mind. I came on to say she wears FOUR coats in that film (and we didn't even see it from the beginning). FOUR coats in Surrey. Who takes four coats on holiday?

And she's from LA, where the average winter temperature is something like 20 degrees. Why would she even own 4 winter coats or have found the time to buy them considering she's booked a next day flight to London.

Zonder · 28/12/2022 09:16

@tinselvestsparklepants I'm shocked! Years of visiting little National Trust cottages and they all had lime / paint on the walls. No bare ones. I'm going to complain to the NT for miseducating me!

@MoonahSton I have solved the coat issue. She doesn't bring any coats because she assumes the weather will be like back home so has to borrow from Kate's huge but extremely tidy coat collection.

Fair enough, but if id been pursued by Jack Black for a few days id find it hard to resist him 🤣

The other good part is when Kate Winslet figures out her brother has shagged Cameron Diaz and shouts at him on the phone, except it’s Cameron - so she changes the line and shouts again and it’s still her 😂

The Jack Black character is SO creepy. He's clearly a Hollywood suits' fantasy that fat bully boys like themselves can pull the most beautiful women in the world without having to make any effort to be more physically attractive, less sleazy or domineering.

Same. I also despise Love Actually. Doesn’t stop me watching it every December.

aka Shit Actually

Iris is VU because I would never say no to Rufus Sewell even if he was secretly engaged to someone else. That man is SEX PERSONIFIED. "Darling I've just travelled across half the world to see you, haven't I?" Oh Jasper you naughty boy.

TheWitchersWife · 28/12/2022 11:53

I love Jack Black. This thread is not for me 🤣

You are not wrong here. He is one sexy man. It's the eyes. Those come to bed eyes.

So I'm agreeing with you, but it won't be long before we get slated for fancying a narcissist and being open to affairs 😂

Well apparently I’m perpetuating misogynistic stereotypes so I imagine we will all be crucified for fancying perhaps the most fanciable actor of recent years.

The only slightly believable relationship in that movie is Winslet and the old man, and even that is a stretch. I still watch in though.
