I think considering you only moved house two weeks ago it was an acceptable effort.

catsonahottinroof · 27/12/2022 17:11

To those saying pigs in blankets, they only really go with turkey or chicken though.
I would be disappointed with no stuffing.
I would be happy with carrots and sweetcorn.
I would prefer custard to brandy sauce, but yes maybe you should have done brandy cream too to be on the safe side.

Anonymouslyposting · 27/12/2022 17:12

I would not be happy with that for Christmas dinner (particularly no pigs in blankets, no stuffing and frozen potatoes which I just don’t like as much as fresh) but if I’m not making it I definitely wouldn’t be complaining about it - unless I was forced to have it every year.

If someone was kind enough to host me for Christmas I’m generally grateful for what I get and I do love pulled pork - I’d just probably make ‘proper’ Christmas dinner for myself, DH and the kids on Boxing Day to scratch that itch.

Wrong. Pigs in blankets go with EVERYTHING.

Any kind of meat and veg. Cheese. Or dipped in chilli jam. Probably even cornflakes

salamanderturtle · 27/12/2022 17:13

Drink selection fine. Dessert also fine. Main a bit odd with the pulled pork but I’d just presume not a confident cook / someone who doesn’t like cooking. I’d eat it though.

FlamingJingleBells · 27/12/2022 17:16

You don't need to know how to cook to serve a Christmas dinner because there's so much ready prepared dishes available. M&s and most supermarkets do a ready prepared lunch which needs reheating & would have been more festive than your offerings.

Anyway, for the New Year learn how to cook a few basic dishes and a roast dinner. It will be more economical and healthier to cook from scratch plus you'll learn about food as you go along.

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 27/12/2022 17:18

It really doesn't matter whats on your plate.

The millions of people that put some effort into Christmas dinner would disagree with you.

Pigonawire · 27/12/2022 17:19

You know your family and what they’re happy to eat. If they were happy then that’s fine. Every family is different. If I served that combination on Christmas Day there would be a riot. Food is the main part of Christmas for us.

Benjispruce4 · 27/12/2022 16:53

I do wish people would stop being such snobs about frozen food. Frozen veg are fresher than fresh unless it’s just been picked .

I know. It’s actually ignorant of people to automatically assume frozen veg is yuk. There is nothing wrong with frozen sprouts, they can be prepared with bacon or chestnuts or whatever you like to have with fresh. They are not actually served on the plate frozen 🙄 Frozen roast potatoes on the other hand are not good and don’t taste anything like home made.

Typical MN, insisting people 'scale it back' for a stress free Christmas yet when they do it's sad and yuk.

I think people are willfully misunderstanding why posters think it's a poor effort.

Frozen veg - no problem.
Scaled back, easy menu - good for you, no one needs a nervous breakdown over Christmas dinner.

The shops were full of delicious ready prepared Christmas food whether it was for a formal Christmas dinner or something more casual so considering OP would have otherwise paid hundreds for a restaurant meal this seems not only low effort but low interests and imagination.

Threeboysandadog · 27/12/2022 17:22

I think it sounds fine and a lot cheaper than going out. We had Icelands £28 Christmas dinner bundle. Turkey crown, roast potatoes, brussles sprouts, parsnips, pigs in blankets and Yorkshire pudding, all cooked from frozen. I cooked, No one complained. If someone were to cook for me I’d eat whatever and be delighted.

Fairislefandango · 27/12/2022 17:24

I suspect those two things are probably usually not said by the same people!

SOB STORY ALERT
Its was my sister and her family and us.
Christmas for us is spending it together as a family not what we eat. Both of our parents died when were children/teens.

Instead of being in a kitchen we laughed played with lego etc

Although they said its hotdogs next year a joke i hope 😆

I never understand when people say “I can’t cook” or “I don’t cook”. To me being able to prepare simple food is one of the most basic life skills. Because to survive we have to eat.

Shereturnsforonemore · 27/12/2022 17:26

btw im learning. i can make pasta sauces all by myself!!! and a pizza base

Then why post, are you that desperate for attention?

UWhatNow · 27/12/2022 17:27

“It was our turn to host and we wanted everyone to see our new house.

It really doesn't matter whats on your plate.”

Those priorities are all wrong for me. I wouldn’t give a shit about your house but it would matter enormously what I was give to eat.

I lost my parents when I was very very young too op.

Having said that, I get the feeling you are one of those people for whom food holds little interest for you.

You could have bought loads of bung in oven stuff that would have been so much nicer.

Marypuppuns · 27/12/2022 17:28

I don’t get the obsession with Xmas dinner you can have it any day of the year if you wish

ops guest weren’t bothered but if they were they can always cook their own another day

Sisisimone · 27/12/2022 17:29

Frozen sprouts are disgusting, always
horribly soggy and taste nothing like fresh.

Honestly, my dog ate better than that and I don't believe for one second that you couldn't have given your guests a better christmas meal than that. Even if all you can do is put something in an oven there are so many options available that are better than microwaved meat and frozen veg. I think the comments from your family that there was no pressure to finish because you'd made zero effort say it all really.

Needmorelego · 27/12/2022 17:29

@Shereturnsforonemore I like the sound of your Christmas much much better than most here on Mumsnet. I don't get the food obsession part of christmas...I just don't.
I would much rather build Lego than be faffing around with food.

Skyeheather · 27/12/2022 17:29

Someone didn't have a lot of money?
The oven was broken or too small to cook anything?
The host can't cook or didn't want to?
The host was a pensioner and didn't have the energy to cook a dinner from scratch?
The hosts don't want to host again?
The hosts never wanted to host in the first place?

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 27/12/2022 17:31

I’m also a huge fan of sweetcorn on a roast and if I ever hosed Christmas Dinner it would probably on there!

Samcro · 27/12/2022 17:31

Its a meal
sounds fine except for the Brussels

MrsMiddleMother · 27/12/2022 17:31

Yanbu it would be fine with me, even before rtft Christmas is definitely about spending time with people you love, not spending hours alone in the kitchen cooking or getting stressed
