And it's WONDERFUL. They must have had the elves in over the last couple of days because in both the Asda and Waitrose I was in this morning had no decorations, no festive aisles full of tat, no screeching Noddy Holder on the tannoy.

Fabulous. At last back to normal.

I grew up in Scotland and knew the Twelfth Night but we were church goers.

righthererightnow10 · 27/12/2022 17:13

I think it's a shame actually. It's still Christmas time

CharityShopChic · 27/12/2022 17:18

luxxlisbon · 27/12/2022 16:56

@CharityShopChic I don't think I ever heard the phrase "twelfth night" growing up in Scotland. Wasn't a thing.

It a phrase in NI but it’s not about Christmas 😂

July? I hear you!

I'm not saying I have never heard of 12th night, or the 12 Days of Christmas. Of course I had. But this idea that 12th night was special and important and to be marked in some way, and not taking your decs down before then - nah.

They take them down on Christmas eve so that no decs fall and set off the alarms on Christmas day, who wants to be called out over a falling decoration

Krakenwakes · 27/12/2022 17:36

12th Night is traditionally the big party evening, though. It’s the last day of Christmas, a bit like Pancake Tuesday/Mardi Gras being the last blowout before Lent. Surely people at least try to do something to mark it. How do plays like Twelfth Night make sense, otherwise? Or do people think that 12th Night is part of some long ago past? We do the cake with the hidden bean.

Nah, I'm not buying that one .
Our local Tesco Extra regularly has sparrows flying round inside , I don't think the alarms would pick them up otherwise they'd have to be permenantly camped out by the screens .So a falling decoration.?
Plus with all the high value produce waiting for the sales , they'd have security on site .
It's retail money grab.

I put it in the "long ago past" bracket. By 6th January we are well into the New Year, back to work, school, uni. It's just another ordinary day.

I agree. I didn’t think it was very common for people to think of Christmas ending on 25th December. I think it is a shame to do away with the ‘12 days’ !

CharityShopChic · 27/12/2022 17:42

And to add: the "12 days" would be fine if that's what it was.

But people seem to want a bit of November, most of December and THEN the full 12 days through to the first week of January.

2 whole months of "festive fun". No thanks.

Oops, my post was meant to be in reply to the person who said people think of 1st -25th as Christmas, and I was agreeing with the person who said this wasn’t the case for them!

Weepachu · 27/12/2022 17:46

LOL

Ericaequites · 27/12/2022 17:50

@CharityShopChic I worked in an American charity shop. We put out Christmas decorations, dishes, and other tat year round. It sold well, which is what matters.

Heyhoitsme · 27/12/2022 17:56

A few weeks ago I watched the delivery of Easter cakes to Iceland. Hopefully they store well.

MichaelAndEagle · 27/12/2022 18:25

Probably been said, sorry. But the problem with Christmas being 1st to 25th Dec is that it is ALL work, parties, etc.
I like the period after Christmas up until New Year to enjoy it and relax!
Plus, as a mid winter festival there's still a lot of winter to get through.

MenopauseSucks · 27/12/2022 18:37

I'll keep up some white fairy lights in my garden until Candlemass!!
I decorate the house as late as possible - 20-21 Dec - then take them down on 12th Night.

Benjispruce4 · 27/12/2022 18:54

My back garden has lights all year round and my kitchen has red chilli 🌶️ lights all year so I do t feel bereft.

I've Googled these. I had no idea they even existed.

They are fabulous! I want! Outdoor ones for the garden too. Thank you for putting a smile on my face 😀

See, I don’t think Christmas starts in November or most of December. I don’t know anyone who’d put a tree up so early. It really is only a two-week period, maybe three at a push, from late December to early January. Obviously, schools have to do things a bit earlier, because they break up for the holiday.

VestaTilley · 27/12/2022 19:17

YABU. There are twelve days of Christmas, which go on until Epiphany (or Candlemas on 2 Feb if you’re really committed). Perhaps if shops and idiots didn’t decorate in November you wouldn’t be sick of it.

VestaTilley · 27/12/2022 19:19

@Krakenwakes we also do Twelfth cake, and a few years ago a big Twelfth Night party - everyone loved it!

hookiewookie29 · 27/12/2022 19:28

My daughter works for a retail group.
They've had to de-Christmas because the stock room is full.of Easter stuff...

quantumbutterfly · 27/12/2022 19:35

Easter won't start till Shrove Tuesday for me.

You make it sound as there is only one way - your way - although many of us don’t believe in the 12 days, epiphany etc and have a different way of celebrating Christmas

LlynTegid · 27/12/2022 19:59

Nothing wrong with Noddy Holder in my opinion, but agree with the OPs sentiment about normality.

What @VestaTilley said isn’t her way…it is the actual way. She didn’t just make it up to be a twat. You don’t have to go along with it, it’s not compulsory. You don’t have to believe in Mondays either but they’re still there unfortunately
