And it's WONDERFUL. They must have had the elves in over the last couple of days because in both the Asda and Waitrose I was in this morning had no decorations, no festive aisles full of tat, no screeching Noddy Holder on the tannoy.

Fabulous. At last back to normal.

We have hot cross buns on sale where I work along with creme egg

fancyacuppatea · 27/12/2022 14:03

Excellent!

Easter eggs here I come. 😋

loveliesbleeding1 · 27/12/2022 14:04

Trudij123 Then you are a very good friend indeed!

Blueberrypeapod · 27/12/2022 14:04

What happened to the 12 days of Christmas? We’re only on day 3 here, still enjoying a Christmas atmosphere.
Local tree collections have started and end on the 30th Dec…??
i suppose if you put your tree up at the end of November you’re sick of it by now.

I worked in a department store over Christmas many years ago, and the staff had to stay late on Christmas Eve to take down the decorations and put up the Sale posters, tag the Sale stock and hang it all out. I remember I didn't get home until 8pm and I was by no means the last to leave.

Needless to say, most of those working were women who will have then spent most of Christmas Day on their feet running around after others. At least back then the shops didn't open on Boxing Day.

Yep, it hasn't changed. I worked in retail up until just before COVID hit - we "closed early" to the public on Christmas Eve but we always ended up leaving later than normal as we had to price and hang all the sale stock, nd change all the POS over. It took hours with a full team of staff.

Then we had the joys of starting an hour earlier (and finishing an hour later) than normal on Boxing Day to sell as much as possible, and then get everything re-stocked for the 27th.

I don't miss it Grin

astralpiano · 27/12/2022 14:06

I'd love to see tinsel up in the shops all year round. It makes me happy.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/12/2022 14:06

I used to work Christmas eve in Tesco as a student and one of my jobs was to put out the mini eggs. :)

SmudgeButt · 27/12/2022 14:06

the local M&S had the selection of hot cross buns in a week before Christmas.

I'll be waiting a week before I dismantle the house and then find a way to recycle all the tat we inherited from MiL. (christmas and otherwise)

Needmorelego · 27/12/2022 14:08

Ahhh....yes working in retail at christmas is fantastic.
Desperately trying to get the last customers to leave on Christmas Eve so you can actually shut the shop to remove any and every sign of christmas because God forbid there should still be some signs of christmas hanging around during the actual 12 days of Christmas. Oh the horror of it being the 27th December and a christmas tree might still be up at the front of the shop.
So Xmas Eve. ...probably about 9/10pm you get to leave. Because you had to take that tree down and pack it away.
No bus home because they stopped running at 4pm so you have to walk in the dark and cold.
But yeah...
No I can't say anymore without swearing.
Sorry.

Wonnle · 27/12/2022 14:08

My local Lidl is still stacked out with stuff in the Christamas aisle , none of it discounted either .

SlashBeef · 27/12/2022 14:13

Our tree only went up 2 weeks ago and I'm itching to get it down. Certainly havent been knee deep in decorations since mid November so that's not why I'm sick of it. Will probably get it down by Friday. Glad to know the shops are normal again!

MN is the only place I come across this attitude that Christmas starts on 24th/25th December, and goes right through to 6th January.

This is not something I see reflected in my life or my friends' lives, "Christmas" is basically 1-25 December with parties, nativity plays, shopping, planning, pantomime visits etc, all culminating in Christmas Day.

By now, it's over.

Really? I don’t know anyone who thinks the festive period is over before NYE. I’ve never actually known anyone to take their tree down before New Years let alone by Boxing Day!
Many people are still visiting friends and family for Christmas between 27th-31st.

ExiledElsie · 27/12/2022 14:16

By now, it's over.

It wouldn't normally be for me, I usually put the tree up the week before Christmas and down on 6th Jan.

mamabear715 · 27/12/2022 14:17

Bloodyhell, they can't wait to get from one thing to the next, can they?
I'd be sad if I went to a supermarket & all traces of Christmas had disappeared.. thank goodness I shop online & my house is still like Santa's workshop.. ;-)

FourChimneys · 27/12/2022 14:19

Our local convenience shop had mince pies and Easter eggs side by side today. They are always so far ahead of things they will probably have Halloween stuff out soon.

mincepiesandi · 27/12/2022 14:21

I can't understand why they can't keep the food out for another week or so to get rid of stock! I went today to try and get a few more things we really enjoyed, was surprised to find nothing at all left. They MUST have binned a lot.

alwaysinwellies · 27/12/2022 14:22

Luckydip1 · 27/12/2022 13:54

I think it's a shame.

local garden centre/restaurant/food hall near me is well known for Xmas stuff. It goes all out. We went there at lunchtime one Xmas eve and they were starting to pack away the Xmas stuff and decorations - it really ruined it for me - how one event hasn’t even happened and it’s already onto the next one.

DomesticShortHair · 27/12/2022 14:22

Our local Tesco normally has a trolley where you can deposit food etc. for a local animal rescue centre. It was taken away in December so they could put a large, tacky cardboard Christmas tree in its place instead. The quicker that comes down and the trolley is back the better, as far as I’m concerned. It’s not as if Christmas In a cost of living crisis is a quiet period for rescue centres, is it Tesco?

RampantIvy · 27/12/2022 14:27

And we no longer have to listen to Christmas songs on a continuous loop for another 11 months either.

DappledThings · 27/12/2022 14:27

Shops will be included in my Decorations Act when I'm made dictator. If they want to sell anything Christmassy or decorate their shops they can do only from the start of Advent and cannt remove anything until Twelfth Night. Same will apply to domestic properties, pubs, street decorations and anywhere else!

Jennybeans401 · 27/12/2022 14:28

Easter eggs next in January!!!

Jennybeans401 · 27/12/2022 14:31

@luxxlisbon yes I always thought of Christmas as right up to NY Day. It does seem to end on Christmas day now though. I rarely hear carols, Xmas music after Christmas Day but this is very different to twenty or thirty years ago.

We have hot cross buns on sale where I work along with creme egg

The other day in M&S I couldn’t find any tea cakes, only hot cross buns. They seem to be available all year round now.

I recall many years ago going into Woolworths on Christmas Eve and they were putting the Easter eggs out.

sobeyondthehills · 27/12/2022 14:32

One of the reasons why I hate Christmas so much is working in retail, the staying late on Christmas Eve to get the sale stuff up, the starting early on Boxing day, the customers telling me its a shame I am working boxing day, being screamed at on Christmas eve, because we dont have the most popular thing in stock and they have waited this long to get it.

So OP yabu its not fricking elves, its sodding people who stayed late and are underpaid

See this view is odd to me as in my experience MN is the only place where people think Christmas is over after Boxing Day with the decorations down before New Year.

In your words your view is not something that is reflected in my experience with my family and friends

The festive season is not over until after New Year and decorations don’t come down until the 6th. After the rush of pre Christmas, now is the time to enjoy the season
