And it's WONDERFUL. They must have had the elves in over the last couple of days because in both the Asda and Waitrose I was in this morning had no decorations, no festive aisles full of tat, no screeching Noddy Holder on the tannoy.

Fabulous. At last back to normal.

I remember when "Christmas" only started in December and the decorations didn't go up in the shops and High Street until then.
I also remember my poor mum frantically shopping in the run up as everything shut on Christmas Day until after NY Day - with just the odd corner shop open if you'd run out of anything.
These days, by the time if finally gets here, it feels like it's been going on forever!
In my house Xmas ends on 12th night. That's when the tree and the decs come down - according to superstition anyway.

squashyhat · 27/12/2022 16:10

I think this rush to move on to the next commercial opportunity is really sad. I wish we waited until 1st December to anticipate Christmas and then used the period 24th Dec until 2nd Jan to really slow down, appreciate the now and ready ourselves for the new year.

AnnieSnap · 27/12/2022 16:13

I don’t know why this is happening this year. Christmas stuff is usually pushed at us until New Year. It’s great that it’s coming down though 💃🏻💃🏻

milveycrohn · 27/12/2022 16:14

My DS has a birthday in January, and I once made the mistake of thinking I'll get something after Christmas.
However, all the good stuff had gone completely. So now, I have think buy before Christmas!
You will find all their Valentine stuff out now, or even Easter stuff........

Christmas ending on 5/6 January has always been the norm in the UK. That's twelfth night. When I was a child, nobody would have CONSIDERED putting up decorations before the start of December.

In other countries things are done differently. In Germany, my friends put up their decs a couple of days before Christmas and leave them up for the whole of January.

Yes, Christmas decorations have always stayed up till 12th Night. I’m in my 50s, and my parents and grandparents did the same. It’s only on MN that I’ve ever heard of people taking them down before then. This is prime Christmas season - parties, pantos etc. And the decorations surely at least stay for New Year, or do people re-decorate again specifically for New Year? We’ll probably keep some up till February, though the tree has to come down after 12th Night because that’s when the council come round to recycle them. You can’t do it beforehand.

I don't think I ever heard the phrase "twelfth night" growing up in Scotland. Wasn't a thing. Decorations usually stayed up in our house until New Year's day, removed on the second for a new start to the New Year.

Twelfth night is definitely a thing in Scotland, well it has been for all my life

At least in the US they wait until after Thanksgiving, so end of November. It still feels like eternity. I expect to see valentine's stuff the next time I go to the shops though🙄

Target started with the valentines stuff a couple weeks ago 😬

Floralnomad · 27/12/2022 16:26

The local Next had practically got rid of Christmas on Christmas Eve morning , it was full of the crap they put in their sales .

2021 census says 46.2% stated Christianity as their religion, it happens to be the one I was brought up in so I'll crack on till 12th night. I hear that in Spain that's when the pressies are given.

You do you and I'll do me. 😘

You would be absolutely right. 6 Jan in Spain, is much more important than Christmas Day, there is no boxing day, it is when the 3 Kings arrive with presents on the 6th that counts.

There are 12 days of Christmas ending on 12th night, the 6th.

Same in France, Italy, Greece (I believe) definitely in Spain. I hav eto do 2 "Christmases", almost.

Benjispruce4 · 27/12/2022 16:40

Brought up Catholic. Decs always stayed up until Jan 6th for the Epiphany (3 kings arrival) but I normally take them down after 1/1.

Benjispruce4 · 27/12/2022 16:41

Surely people have heard of The Twelve Days of Christmas?

Being pedantic - 12th night is on the 5th 😊

Yes - heard of it but don’t believe it so no need to worry about any superstitions as to when you take the decorations down.

Benjispruce4 · 27/12/2022 16:43

I was replying to someone who had not heard of twelfth night.

TellMeWhere · 27/12/2022 16:43

They'll be prepping the valentines and easter crap out back.

WeAreBorg · 27/12/2022 16:43

CharityShopChic · 27/12/2022 13:31

MN is the only place I come across this attitude that Christmas starts on 24th/25th December, and goes right through to 6th January.

This is not something I see reflected in my life or my friends' lives, "Christmas" is basically 1-25 December with parties, nativity plays, shopping, planning, pantomime visits etc, all culminating in Christmas Day.

By now, it's over.

Mumsnet invented the twelve days of Christmas 😂

Lorrymum · 27/12/2022 16:45

Christmas TV adds appeared so early this year. When you are actually buying food for Christmas they disappear from our screens.

Benjispruce4 · 27/12/2022 16:46

To me it’s over after New Year. I work in school so this is the Christmas holidays. We meet up with family still, catch up with those we didn’t see on 25th.

WeAreBorg · 27/12/2022 16:48

Anyone who thinks Christmas is over already is a miserable fucker - fact

adriftabroad · 27/12/2022 16:53

Well, they should be left up until the 2 February ...discuss.

TashaBasha · 27/12/2022 15:13

Oh is it mostly women that work in retail? And mostly women that run Xmas day? That's quite some generalisations there...

Yes it is mostly women who work in retail. Have a look next time you are in a shop.

luxxlisbon · 27/12/2022 16:56

@CharityShopChic I don't think I ever heard the phrase "twelfth night" growing up in Scotland. Wasn't a thing.

It a phrase in NI but it’s not about Christmas 😂

WatchoRulo · 27/12/2022 17:00

No doubt the bastards will have the place full of valentines and easter shit soon.

MyNameisMathilda · 27/12/2022 17:02

You have all forgotten all the exercise equipment and clothing moved up to the front of TJ Max 😂

AFigmentOfMyOwnImagination · 27/12/2022 17:03

One year I went into both my local shop and the co-op on Christmas Eve and both were putting Easter things on the shelf
