And it's WONDERFUL. They must have had the elves in over the last couple of days because in both the Asda and Waitrose I was in this morning had no decorations, no festive aisles full of tat, no screeching Noddy Holder on the tannoy.

Fabulous. At last back to normal.

Easter eggs next in January!!!

I saw some hot cross buns in Tesco this morning, with a use by date of 1st January!

LuckyLuckyWoman · 27/12/2022 14:35

In my experience christmas in retail starts in September and is over by mid December.

See this view is odd to me as in my experience MN is the only place where people think Christmas is over after Boxing Day with the decorations down before New Year.

Same here. Maybe it's the demographic with a lot of parents with young children, and lots of pre Christmas activities?

@IreneJones my mate who works in Morrisons (warehouse/stock control rather than front of house) sent a photo of Easter eggs in the back, on Christmas Eve.

LouisCatorze · 27/12/2022 14:43

I reckon part of the issue is that computerised stock control means that shops buy/supply just enough rather than overdoing it (remember the years of buying Christmas puddings and mincemeat mega reduced - just doesn't happen now does it?), so Christmas winds up (retail-wise) on the 24th rather than well into January, as used to be the case.

ExpulsoCorona · 27/12/2022 14:45

Isn't Orthodox Christmas on the 7th of January?

Well, I’d keep away from the frozen foods isle.

Elves? I used to work in retail. We worked late every Christmas Eve, as we had to change all of the POS ( point of sale) to the next promotion. ( and we weren’t paid overtime)

No Elves involved, just a great team of hardworking underpaid people.

Ive been in two shops today, and both times the ladies ( unsolicited) said that they didn’t feel they had been off at all, as they were only off on the Sunday.

Please bear this in mind, if anyone ever has an urge to be rude to retail staff. Which a lot of people seemingly are, quite often

CharityShopChic · 27/12/2022 14:50

Hot cross buns are available year round, they are no longer a purely Easter thing.

Hazzah!

I don't like seeing the detritus of Christmas once it's passed. The tree will be down on New Year's Eve, and much as I love it, I'll be pleased to have the place looking spacious, clean and tidy again. My 12 days are 'Yuletide', which begins on 21st in any event.

When work resumes, it's over and I like to be in the right mindset. As for streaming the Father Ted Christmas Special yesterday evening, the holiday ads are already out in force. And they are nearly all cruises!

mum2jakie · 27/12/2022 14:51

Yes spotted mini eggs out in Morrisons on Christmas Eve too!

I worked in a supermarket on Xmas Eve and we did it after the customers left. There's some bits left over but it's about New Years and Easter chocs now

Now that, I can cope with. Give me mini eggs any time over Quality Street!

itispersonal · 27/12/2022 14:54

We took ours down in school on the 21st December (our last day) I find it depressing. My oh works in a supermarket and he takes the stuff down on Christmas Eve, though he is done with Christmas with it starting so early in retail!

I had to tell my dd it is still Christmas as she was like it's over!

In your words your view is not something that is reflected in my experience with my family and friends

The festive season is not over until after New Year and decorations don’t come down until the 6th. After the rush of pre Christmas, now is the time to enjoy the season

Just typed this out (The Christmas season isn’t really over until New Years Day. The decorations themselves come down on the 6th Jan) then saw your comment.

Thats it exactly.

Travis1 · 27/12/2022 14:57

YABU Those ‘elves’ are peoples family members who have missed out on time with family including people like my cousins partner who couldn’t even get boxing night off meaning he’s out with us today after nightshirt and has to leave again soon to account for tonight’s night shift. So yeah you gloat and people like him will miss time with loved ones to make you happy

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/12/2022 13:25

The nursery my son goes to had the Xmas tree down and laying at the gate on the 23rd lol I took that as a "hoorah we are on holiday" sign. :D

At the school where I worked, we used to take the Christmas trees and all the decorations down immediately after the end of the term, which was usually around the 8th of December. Most years, the school tree came down long before I'd got around to putting my own one up at home!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/12/2022 15:02

Considering that two days ago was Christmas Day, I really hope that a load of hard-pushed retail workers, who've been rushed off their feet in the run-up to Christmas, were not expected to give up their family Christmas Day just to take down decorations and festive signs.

sentientpuddle · 27/12/2022 15:03

I'm in N.I.
A shop I was in on xmas eve had their St Paddy's Day gear out.
Went into Next & they had loads of areas blocked off in preparation for their sale.
Their stock was shite too.

HermioneWeasley · 27/12/2022 15:06

It’s not elves it’s retail staff staying late on Xmas eve or early Boxing Day to do the physically hard and fiddly work of changing every thing over

Parker231 · 27/12/2022 15:06

I love it when the supermarket get back to normal this week and they restock with things which weren’t available as the space was taken by Christmas food. But am also looking forward to some mini eggs!

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 27/12/2022 15:07

I think it's miserable going into Tesco on Christmas Eve and seeing ironing boards and pastel coloured laundry baskets in the "festive" aisle. I completely agree it all comes out too early, but it should be left up til New year..that is the festive season for most people.
