Lighthearted! In laws are going home tomorrow but not before they’ve annoyed me by pronouncing croissant as ‘croo-sont’ for the millionth time.

What’s the minor annoyance from your house guests that has been bothering you disproportionally?

(I’ll say it again - a light hearted thread! I love my in-laws really)

I got woken at 6 to a big crash and pup barking, my mum had woken him going to loo but decided she’d go down to him, knocking over the stair gate barrier. I came down and she was trying to get him out to pee and telling him she had her slippers on so couldn’t come. He needs to go out instantly as he dribbles pee when greeting people if excited and with a nighttime bladder full, there was pee everywhere. She’s now back to bed and I’m awake and annoyed. Even though she couldn’t have known all this but still!

My DM mispronounces this with emphasis over and over and over. I’ve made a mental note not to serve croissants again Grin

Mintakan · 27/12/2022 06:48

My dear MIL who loves alone narrates EVERYTHING she does.

I adore her but 5 days of it is taxing to say the least.

Mintakan · 27/12/2022 06:49

Stupid autocorrect… that should say LIVES alone 🙃

Yes! “I’m having a crooooo-sont. Would anybody else like a croooooo-sont?’

then later on “those croooo-sonts were small. I’ve never had such a small crooooooooooooooo-sont”

Both my mother and my mil put on a really high pitched, shrill voice when talking to the kids. Drives me potty!

Oh god I can just imagine! Why do they insist on ‘helping’?

Oh god ex MIL does this. And says "well done" after absolutely everything.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 27/12/2022 07:02

We're staying at my Dad's at the moment and he Will. Not. Relax.

He is constantly pottering in the kitchen or looking for things to tidy up. If you ask a question (where are the bin bags/ what's the PIN for the TV/ can I help myself to a beer?) He leaps up and starts fussing about with different sizes and strengths of bin liners, a selection of beverages and insists on entering the TV PIN himself. I'm 44, just tell me the PIN. I don't want to have to call him in from the kitchen every time I want to change programme. No one is allowed to help in the kitchen, but he insists we all start eating while he continues to fuss about. So he doesn't even sit and eat with us until we are half finished.

Oh god this makes my scalp prickle thinking about it, but my mother insists on calling houmous “hugh-moose” and nothing I say will persuade her that it’s incorrect. Unfortunately she’s a vegan, so she eats a lot of Hugh-moose. RAAAAAAAGE!!!!

LaMadrilena · 27/12/2022 07:07

My (lovely) MIL is here saying utterly random shit. DD (18m) was opening her stocking on Christmas morning and coughing her little heart out, because we've all had flu and she's been coughing for days.

MIL: That's because of the wrapping paper. Wrapping paper has a really strong smell that makes you cough.

(The wrapping paper did not smell.)

KangarooKenny · 27/12/2022 07:08

This is why I don’t have guests.

Hugasauras · 27/12/2022 07:13

This is making me laugh a lot. Croo-sont Grin

SamanthaCaine · 27/12/2022 07:14

French words are always a problem. Classic ones I hear from family/friends are:

"Oh that's a nice gilet" (like skillet)

Or

"Pot (like snot) pourri seems to be making a comeback"

Although does anyone purposely mispronounce certain words? I tend to say duvet like dove-t and some others with a mix of Dell Boy and Pat Butcher. Just for silliness more than anything but seems to be a thing in our family.

Damnloginpopup · 27/12/2022 07:15

Bloody idiot. It's cross-ont. I know because my mum is bilingual 😁

We can't get enough of making her talk about ping-wings 🤣 we got five minutes between us around out presents ..

Pingwin.
What?
Pingwing
what now?
Ping-wings?
Yes. Ping-wings!
Sorry what?
Ping wings.

What are you lot talking about?

Ping wings

Etc. Brilliant. EVERY FUCKING TIME 🤣

Didn’t Delia Smith call it “Hugh Moose” or “Hoo Moose” on one of her programmes? Perhaps that’s where she’s got it from. If Delia says it then it must be right!

I have a recollection of Harry Hill taking the piss out of it on TV Burp. Oh, I miss that programme.

Soproudoflionesses · 27/12/2022 07:18

My sister either asks loads of questions about what we are watching on TV so you can't hear it or she will talk along with the actors if it is a programme or film she has seen before.
I told her off last night for it!

I have a colleague like this. Constantly talking to herself about what she's doing and going to do next!

MavisMcMinty · 27/12/2022 07:29

My Dad has always said pizza as “pitsa”, as in pit. My best friend pronounces Saudi as “Sordi”. My favourite one is my sat-nav, who always tells me to “Take the motorway tords Townton” (towards Taunton).

Remona · 27/12/2022 07:35

I once had a row with my ex-ILs about the word “awry”. I used it in context and pronounced correctly. They actually laughed at me and were absolutely adamant that it was pronounced “or-ree”. They simply wouldn’t accept that they were wrong.

It still irritates me (if you can’t tell) 😂

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 27/12/2022 07:39

I'm an MIL and must really get on my kids nerves with the way I pronounce falafel. Fal-a-fell 😂

Just got back from Paris, I was in a cafe and an American came in and loudly asked for a crussarnt. I know I winced and when I looked around I saw a few others did, too.

My MIL does that as well!!
« DD is a tomboy » … err no, she isn’t, she is quite a girly 8 yo who ONCE got very muddy at the playground and didn’t care that she was dirty - that was last summer! But apparently that makes her a tomboy for life.
