Croo-sont

Lighthearted! In laws are going home tomorrow but not before they’ve annoyed me by pronouncing croissant as ‘croo-sont’ for the millionth time.

What’s the minor annoyance from your house guests that has been bothering you disproportionally?

(I’ll say it again - a light hearted thread! I love my in-laws really)

Ping wings

I’m obviously being stupid but what does ‘ping wings’ mean?

WhatTheFlap · 27/12/2022 08:09

My DM drives me absolutely barmy every time I stay with her. Everything seems really minor but it gets on my tits so much 😂

She is the definition of a panicker. Cannot relax at all if she has guests and is always running about trying to host and making me feel on edge.

She repeats the same stories over and over again and gets upset if I point this out.

She overbuys everything and then empties her fridge into our car before we leave. Unless I sit and go through things and say we don’t want it, I’ll find it in my car boot when I get home so we end up with a load of stuff we won’t eat.

She cannot interact whatsoever when she’s on her phone. It takes her about 20 minutes to send a text (with the keypad sounds on) so I just have to sit in silence and wait while she replies to all her Christmas messages.

I love her to pieces but my god I was happy to leave yesterday 😅

Penguins?

Bouncebacker · 27/12/2022 08:12

Can I add referring to yourself in the 3rd person to this list? “Did Grandma get that right?”, “shall Grandma do that for you?” 🤢

feliciabirthgiver · 27/12/2022 08:16

Yes @Beginningless I've also been up every morning with MIL's yappy dog. She gets up for a wee at 5 and then the dog starts yapping for breakfast and to go out. As she's not very mobile on the stairs I'm then up doing the dog. Christmas morning it was just me and the dog up from 5 until the DC woke up at 7:40!

JacquelinePot · 27/12/2022 08:18

Staying with my mum and when we're watching anything on TV she reads out the news headlines from her phone so we all miss large chunks of plot. I now tend to suggest watching things I've seen before.

Worst is when she talks about a story as if we know what it is already, like "they caught that man who killed that woman x town" or "isn't that storm in xyz country terrible?". I'm not glued to BBC news so I never know what she's talking about. It drives me potty.

Must try not to get so irritated, she lives alone and I know she just likes the company.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 27/12/2022 08:20

My MIL

Money - mungy
Bus - buzz

And a new one yesterday was "mankle" for mantel.

I think she does it on purpose to be honest.

Rayna37 · 27/12/2022 08:21

DM's deliberate mispronunciation of breakfast as break-fast (brake not brek) once I can just about cope with but more than once drives me nuts. My problem I know! She thinks it's just fun/cute I guess (done mainly when talking to my small DS)

echt · 27/12/2022 08:21

An older version of satnav in Melbourne would say: take the next exit for Rassycourse Road. It's Racecourse Road.
Also "Freeway" is often shortened to F'way on signs, so satnav duly said it as "fway".

Oh god this makes my scalp prickle thinking about it, but my mother insists on calling houmous “hugh-moose” and nothing I say will persuade her that it’s incorrect. Unfortunately she’s a vegan, so she eats a lot of Hugh-moose. RAAAAAAAGE!!!!

Ohgod my mother pronounces it like this too. Infuriating.

French words are always a problem. Classic ones I hear from family/friends are:

"Oh that's a nice gilet" (like skillet)

Or

"Pot (like snot) pourri seems to be making a comeback"

Although does anyone purposely mispronounce certain words? I tend to say duvet like dove-t and some others with a mix of Dell Boy and Pat Butcher. Just for silliness more than anything but seems to be a thing in our family.

I couldn't keep from laughing when my DM said bureau de change. She said "bureau de" with a slight French flair but then said "change" completely English and the clash went right through me Grin

That's a northern thing ....I know a lot of people who say that and if you think about it, it is actually right. That's what it is. Breaking fast.

BlandSoup · 27/12/2022 08:27

@Damnloginpopup have you seen this? Watch from about 3:30. It’s so funny. m.youtube.com/watch?v=tlRpLGEwssA

ZellyFitzgerald · 27/12/2022 08:28

My husband has form for wanky pronunciation of french words particularly.

He says C-wah-sant and it drives me mad, but he insists it's right because he did french at A Level.

At which point I usually remind him that he got a D 😂

And don't get me started on how he says chorizo 🙄

Very funny! Nearly wet myself - thank you very much for that, I had a really right chuckle!

BlandSoup · 27/12/2022 08:29

Snap! jaquelinepot! It’s such a funny clip.

Ragwort · 27/12/2022 08:31

I know my mother is being complimentary but the constant 'amazement' that my 55 year old brother is actually capable of hosting Christmas guests is really grating .. it's as if he's 12 Hmm. Yesterday's gem 'goodness, he's bought fruit juice for breakfast'. Mean I know but I actually snapped back at her yesterday 'he's a perfectly able retired professional - of course he can cook a Christmas meal'. We are driving her home today and I know it will be three hours if 'isn't it extraordinary that he is so capable'. To be fair, she does say the same to me every time I put a meal on the table but a simple 'thank you' would be sufficient.

AriettyHomily · 27/12/2022 08:33

MILsays to take kids 'do you wanna go a wee?' I cannot stand it.

She also says Joobye for Dubai. Having grown up in the ME I never heard it referred to as Joobye.

My mum spent the first 10 minutes of University Challenge reading out the companies who'd wished her a happy Christmas by email. 'Oh, Costa has! Iceland said 'Have a Merry Christmas!'. Nothing from Boots, but I never go in there...'

An an English speaking Welsh person… so can pronounce Welsh words but only string short sentences together. I’m not fluent.

We love near Beddgelert…. Bit we heard a tourist call is Bedlegert. So now that’s what we call it!

QueenOfDuisburg · 27/12/2022 08:40

My MIL says 'lickle' instead of little and it drives me bananas. The sentence that drives me the most mad is when she eats: she likes to snack throughout the day instead of eating three main meals and while doing so she likes to remind us 'I like to eat lickle and often. Lickle and often'. 🤮

This is genuinely hilarious. I can imagine Pam on Gavin & Stacey doing it 🤣

I live near Llanelli. Some people were lost and asked us for directions. They said they'd seen the sign for lan elli. Took me a while to get what they meant! To be fair it does read as that I guess.

StarsOnDress · 27/12/2022 08:42

I know this is petty but my auntie has been staying with us over Christmas and whenever we've been somewhere in the car she always says, "Don't talk, you need to concentrate!" if I'm doing something as simple as turning a corner or approaching a roundabout.

I've been driving for over 20 years - I can talk and drive at the same time! 😬

When I'm joining a motorway or dual carriageway she calls silence on everyone in the car. 😂
