To think EE should not show violence against pregnant woman

For those of you who watch Eastenders, the character Janine is pregnant she is quite mischievous and manipulative. However slapping, pulling hair and choking a pregnant woman just did not sit right with me. Bear in mind all characters involved knew she is pregnant.
Aibu to think EE should not air such disturbing scenes. As I feel it gives a very wrong message. No one deserves physical abuse especially those who are vulnerable. I feel they are normalising it somehow.

someone close to me threatened to kick me in my belly when I was heavily pregnant it just brought back some horrible memories.
FYI I know it’s not real but people are always influenced by what they watch on tv.

I totally agree with you, OP. She was attacked by Linda, Mick and Shirley (a shower of bastards). It felt really uncomfortable.
Team Janine!

Eastenders has a long history of this. I watch it and have done for a long time. I remember Max pushing a heavily pregnant Stacey over onto her bump and then mocking her when she was in pain. Phil throwing a heavily pregnant Sharon to the ground and so on so forth. Whatever Janine is- her baby isn’t. I did notice that Shirley suggested to Linda that she should have let her “finish her off” and Linda said no, because she didn’t want to go to prison.

It was especially disturbing when Shirley is strangling her and Janine cries the baby and Linda says I don’t care. This was just horrible to watch.

Exactly her husband breaking up with her was enough. But all this hair pulling, pushing her from one room to the other deeply disturbing.

YABU violence against pregnant women happens in real life. Soaps are not meant to be light and fluffy.

Saying that, I cheered inside when Linda said "I don't care" when Shirley was straggling Janine. Janine is the epitome of an utter bitch. She was trying to make out her own daughter to be mentally ill to cover her own tracks.

Oher · 27/12/2022 00:06

YANBU. Violence against women is increasingly being normalised by tv / internet, and it is also massively increasing. This is not a coincidence.

Stole money from her to be DiL, blackmailed a young mum, called her DD mentally ill for being honest. She is an awful person.

Oh, didn't she stab herself and blame Stacey too?

bloodyplanes · 27/12/2022 00:12

I have to admit if someone did all the things to me that janines character has done to linda and shirley I wouldn't care less if she was getting strangled either 🤷‍♀️

Findyourneutralspace · 27/12/2022 00:13

Soaps always say part of their role is to highlight issues in society. It might be unpleasant (I haven’t watched Eastenders for years) but violence against pregnant women happens- and in some cases seeing it on a soap and recognising it for what it is is the catalyst for seeking help or change.
Eastenders always has a gritty, uncomfortable Christmas edition - I’m remembering Trevor and Little Mo, Ange and Dirty Den.

There is some statistic out there that says that domestic violence increases when a women is pregnant. That is from her partner... not other people in a storyline involving the pregnant women being a scheming and devious cow. Linda and Shirley would have lamped her one anyway.

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 27/12/2022 00:22

You're ok with all the other types of violence shown then OP?

This might have hit home for you, but it's not about you. Also, no non abusive person will watch this and think oh, I can now hit that pregnant lady that pisses me off .

I think that's the part that made me feel uncomfortable. The fact that the writers obviously wanted us all to cheer at a pregnant woman being strangled.

Murdered her second husband and framed his niece for it? Tried to evict Pat from her house when she was dying?

Guzy · 27/12/2022 00:31

This was not a domestic abuse storyline. Everyone had found out what Janine has done. So they all went for her.

That too. She has a long and very colourful history on the square.

Pearls1234 · 27/12/2022 00:36

Took me far too long to realise EE was Eastenders. I assumed you meant the phone/internet provider!

NopeandSnory · 27/12/2022 00:40

Newnamenewname109870 · 26/12/2022 21:41

Pregnant women are especially vulnerable and it can damage the child. So yeah. Awful.

Have at me then , I’m worth nothing then am I and deserve violence more than a pregnant woman?

CherApparent · 27/12/2022 00:42

What do PP think the Janine storyline is supposed to be 'raising awareness' of?? The need for crash barriers at the white cliffs of Dover? Sparkly jumpsuits are a good look but what about needing a wee at that stage of pregnancy? Dastardly plots will always be uncovered during Christmas dinner? Police will attend with blue lights for perverting the course of justice? The mind boggles.

NopeandSnory · 27/12/2022 00:42

Loved Linda’s response … “I DON’T CARE!” that cow basically stole her life, I wouldn’t care about her baby either in her shoes,

This made me 😂😂😂

Hope to god Danny Dyer doesn’t do a Dirty Den in a few years. Glad to see him and his shitty brooding face gone!

Florenz · 27/12/2022 00:45

Eastenders is a terrible TV show, I can't believe it is still popular.

How old is Janine supposed to be now? She's been in since I used to watch it in the 80s (possibly early 90s).

I don't think they should be doing storylines where pregnant women are being attacked and it's supposed to be a good thing, where they're finally getting their comeuppance.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 27/12/2022 00:48

ODFO OP - Janine is one of the most evil, odious characters ever
And I don't think there was any male violence against her, was there

sholtosscript · 27/12/2022 00:54

Why? That sounds just awful. How many months pregnant is she?

I stopped watching Eastenders a couple of years ago as it was dire. I mean it has been for years but it grew even worse. I didn't know Janine was back!
