The shit Christmas presents of 22 thread.

Another year, another round of presents from family that I cannot use. I have a serious food allergy and another health condition that means that I can't eat or use some foods/cosmetics. These are not new health issues, had them since childhood, yet there is not a single gift out of the few that I received that I can make use of. I decided to be blunt this year (after years of unsuaitable gifts) and tell the givers that I can't use their gifts due allergy etc but thanks anyway. Now I'm an ungracious brat. Am I? "It's not their fault I'm fussy." I'm really not, I just don't want to get sick. I would prefer not to do the gift thing as I'm not overly bothered about that part of Christmas, but I would be ruining it for everyone else, everyone else who gets decent thoughtful presents based on knowing what they like, it's shit when those thoughts are not reciprocated.

Anyone else want to join the naff presents club.

So far this year has been a good one...I only buy and receive gifts from 2 people...got a lovely colour changing essential oil diffuser, a diary and a some micro sd cards, all things i wanted !
But....have yet to see my bored rich friend who sits on her sofa all day buying mountains of junk and tat for everyone.....last year I got about 5 childrens board games...wtf...!!...remote control squirrels and yellow ducks, plastic light up flowers, table tennis kit, table football kit etc etc...the lot went to local food bank the next day....total waste of money and of course totally useless gifts...I always buy her flowers as her place and her storage units are full of junk !

Did she have dementia?

Nope, she just made it abundantly clear that she didn’t like me. I had 38 years of her snide remarks before she died. DH refused to believe what she was like, my SIL (who’s lovely) said that I’d never be able to do anything right for her. DH now realises what she was really like towards me (she was always very careful when anyone else was around). As a three-times-a-week churchgoer her hypocrisy confirmed my opinion of religion.

I got a pack of paper napkins from my SIL. She also gave me a pack for my birthday last month - lucky me I guess 😂

Seriously? Like fancy ones? But even then ....

Dishvtidyxtkep · 25/12/2022 20:31

A bottle of lucazade sport

I snorted and wept as I tried to read it out loud

I love this description of bath bombs. I got a cheap set and I’ve just looked for them online. Turns out they were discontinued a couple of years ago and stained baths too, so I have no desire to find out what they’d do to me! 🤣

ArabellaDrummond · 25/12/2022 20:33

Not me but my DS had an elf costume from his great aunt - great, apart from the fact my DS is 12 months old and the elf costume is size newborn.

Peoplepissmeoff · 25/12/2022 20:34

Ahh I love bath bombs, scented candles and a gift box from hotel chocolat sounds fabulous!! In fact I'm perfectly happy with most of the usual "crappy" presents that people on here dislike getting. I think I'm just easily pleased! 😆

ToWhitToWhoo · 25/12/2022 20:34

My funny 'unsuitable gifts' story is from some years ago (pre-online-purchasing), and not for Christmas; but: a couple of mutual acquaintances discovered at 7 p.m. that it was my cousin's birthday, and insisted that they must give her something on the day. The only nearby shop that was open at the time was the pharmacy. In the end, they got her a soap-and-scent set: probably not her dream present, but OK. However initially, the man in the couple suggested a very garish lipstick. When I pointed out that my cousin rarely wore make-up and when she did, it was quite discreet, he replied 'But surely the whole point of a present is to give someone something that they wouldn't get themselves!' He must have enjoyed my shocked expression, as the next suggestion was Brylcreem!

My mother got me a beanie with a built-in headlamp from Robert Dyas 😌 Probably at closing time yesterday 🙃

I bought one for DH. They're fab when taking the wheelie bin out in winter. Slightly niche use, but it's practical.
(If you press the button more than once it reduces the intensity of the light)

I know they’re useful, but she also knows I already have a head torch as I walk her dog wearing it and she uses it too 😁 It’s grand, I’ll keep it in the car.

FairyBatman · 25/12/2022 20:38

I got tickets to a concert that DH had ‘forgotten’ I already bought tickets for, and discussed with him, and a t-shirt that I’ll never wear…

värskekapsas · 25/12/2022 20:39

cleaning sponges!! wrapped up and everything

chevvyroo · 25/12/2022 20:41

Tiredo · 25/12/2022 17:36

@janeeyreair vinted 😞 it was only me and him, dc were playing with their presents. I had a little cry while I chopped the veg 😆

Thats awful and I don't blame you for crying but there has to be a back story right?

LordEmsworth · 25/12/2022 20:41

My mum bought me the autobiography of Brian Johnson, lead singer of ACDC. I was a bit baffled as to why. Eventually we worked out that it was on an Amazon wishlist of someone with the same name as me... I nearly died laughing, I felt terrible when she asked "but I thought you like the Life of Brian" which I do, but this is an entirely different Life of Brian 😂. Best present ever (but I will be returning it to Amazon nonetheless 😂)

IdaGoodnight · 25/12/2022 20:43

@Acheyknees
me, me, me - I’ll have ‘em.

serve with a blob of Greek yogurt or cream. Top a plain cheese cake. Drizzle the syrup over pancakes & waffles. Use with meringue.
You can also get boozie pickled cherries - see above, but also use for Black Forest Gateaux / trifle.

12 bottles of similarly coloured nail varnish, plus various cuticle oils & cuticle creams from DM. I probably wear nail varnish twice a year. Still, they’ll see me out.

BelleNoir · 25/12/2022 20:45

MIL got me a box of Poundland liqueur chocolates, I'd rather she didn't bother

MakeWayMoana · 25/12/2022 20:54

We tend to do vouchers/experience gifts now, rather than the ‘stuff’ people feel the need to buy each other.

My husband and I got tickets to see a comedian, from BIL and his wife, and an afternoon tea from MIL. My mum has got us an escape room experience.

I do like the experience gifts as they don’t create any pointless waste, and it really can be something that I wouldn’t have thought of myself but there’s still a good chance I’d like it. I do miss the boxes of chocolates though - I’ll take anyone’s hotel chocolat gift boxes!

Onto the shit gifts though…

My dad doesn’t buy presents anymore, he gives my kids cash in a card. He went out and got personalised cards especially made for them this year… and spelt my eldest’s name completely wrong 🤦‍♀️

He also bought me a car phone charger once… it didn’t fit my car or my phone 🤣

He's given a few other really awful gifts in the past… one of the reasons he doesn’t buy presents anymore!

ScrappyMoggy · 25/12/2022 20:54

My DSIS gave me and DH a box of chocolates each. We aren’t big chocolate eaters which she knows. I’m diabetic.

Not nice ones either, just a box of milk tray for me and then a box of Thornton’s for him. The Thornton’s ones had a sticker on saying Thank you for all your help bringing on Jude’s reading this year.

She is a primary school teacher…

She asked me a month ago for a very specific gift related to her hobby. More than I was planning to spend (£150) but I decided to be generous this year…

My family totally gave up gift giving 3 years ago. We don’t miss it and are so thankful we don’t have the stresses of finding the perfect gift anymore. More families should try it.
It’s such a relief.

Absolutely. This thread just proves what a waste of time presents are.

needtonamechange1000 · 25/12/2022 19:08

I think I might have given crap gifts.

I bought my four year old niece a unicorn dressing gown (she loves unicorns). I'm told no children that age would wear a dressing gown (it was towelling) and told off for not checking first. Should I have done?? I thought my choosing it was part of the thing as they have loads of money. Also soft toy which parents don't want her to have for unspecified reasons. I will now have to buy alternative gifts and have been thoroughly told off. Genuinely aibu to be miffed? Should I have checked first?

My 3yo loves her dressing gown! But I admit I don't want more cuddly toys for her. Drowning in them

Romeocorner · 25/12/2022 21:05

I got Lidl dog treats and a miniature bottle of wine from my secret Santa.

I organized it. Suggested spend was £15 with an opportunity to say likes and dislikes. I said no alcohol, silly me didn't think to say no cheap treats for my dog. CF who bought for me put on her list scented candles but not from primark or Aldi/Lidl but Zara good.
I'm actually wishing away my time off as I can't wait to pull her up on our return to work.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 25/12/2022 21:06

chevvyroo · 25/12/2022 20:31

Seriously? Like fancy ones? But even then ....

One of them had the price on still - £4. At least I'm all set for picnics next summer.

Catslovepies · 25/12/2022 21:10

That's awful @ScrappyMoggy - you've been swindled, basically.

It really does help to read about the shit presents others have received. So many awful stories on this thread but at least we're not alone. I was feeling really hurt about my experience but you're all cheering me up (while at the same time I'm sorry there are so many of us with such thoughtless people in our lives).

Bigbadmama · 25/12/2022 21:20

Chose my own handbag from a local womens clothing and accessory shop. Photographed it and sent to DH by Whatsapp so he knew exactly what to buy and where from. Clueless !

Ireallywantsomechips · 25/12/2022 21:21

My mum says I’m hard to buy for because I don’t like “stuff”. I say to not buy me anything yet she still buys me “stuff”

Shes bought me a wooden spoon and the spoony bit is heart shaped, it’s very small. It’s cute but what do I do with it?

I also took part in our first secret Santa at work. Everyone had really thoughtful gifts, I got a box of the round Lindt ball things. Which I loathe, was really miffed how mine was so impersonal. Blimmin love hotel chocolat though!
