Influencers

For a special anniversary treat,my husband booked us two nights at the Shard hotel in London. One of the attractions there is the infinity pool on the 52nd floor.I decided on a mid morning swim and was happy to find it empty.I was gently swimming back and forth when a woman and two men arrived. She was wearing a scrap of a bikini while one of the men fussed over her trowelled on makeup and hair extensions (not being bitchy,I've never seen such thick foundation and eyebrows while her hair reached her waist but didn't look real.) Second man asked me to leave the pool. They obviously weren't staff so I asked why."We need (need?) to make this video with Shalimar-she has thousands of followers who've been looking forward to her day at the Shard."So Shalimar was an "influencer".I replied that I'd just started my swim-they could make their video while I was in the pool or,if they really need it empty, wait until I was finished. He said they'd only be 20 minutes, half an hour at most,so why couldn't I get out now?I repeated I'd just got in and I was staying in until I'd finished.I wasn't splashing around so couldn't they just film around me?Whereupon video man went over to a member of staff and explained his vitally important mission.I assumed the staff member would support me but she asked me-very politely-if I'd be prepared to vacate the pool for half an hour and she'd give me a complimentary drink. Not much of an enticement since I don't drink so I stood my ground or rather trod water.I actually ended up staying in the pool longer than I intended just to be awkward while the threesome applied even more make up and practised camera angles on the edge of the pool but do you think I was being unreasonable?(I was also extremely happy when a party of six arrived and got into the pool just as I was finally leaving.)

I'm am living for this, so rude of them. Good on you x

Rustyhandlebars · 24/12/2022 23:52

Good for you, let them hire a private pool.

Banjaxx · 24/12/2022 23:55

I’d have reacted the same as you, including staying in longer than I was planing, totally self absorbed narcissistic entitled twattery on their part. I’d also be tempted to complain to the manger about the member of staff not defending your equal rights as a paying guest to enjoy the facilities without being harrasessed to make way for them, abs I’d that gals to garner an apology then tripadvisor the arse out of it just for badness.. they’re clearly trying to curry favour with the influencer to ride off the back of positive socials so cancel it out for them if they’re twats about it!

HelloBunny · 24/12/2022 23:58

I don’t understand influencers, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat or Instagram. I’ve never looked at any of them... It totally perplexing to me!

lynthesearesexpeople · 25/12/2022 00:02

I’d have stayed in there all bloody day.

Entitled fuckwits.

And the member of staff should not have asked you to get out! Ffs, you were a paying guest, if they wanted a private pool they should have hired one.

JoyBeorge · 25/12/2022 00:06

I'd have stayed too. Fuck that.

goinback · 25/12/2022 00:07

Had a work interaction with someone who answered influencer as their occupation. Every single one of them comes across as a self obsessed arse.
I would be so wrinkly staying in the pool.

BelleMarionette · 25/12/2022 00:11

I had the displeasure of coming across 'influencers'. They were self absorbed vacuous individuals without basic manners. They filmed myself and colleagues at our workplace without permission, then put the video on YouTube.

superdupernova · 25/12/2022 00:14

I would have said no and stayed longer too. You should do a trip advisor review mentioning that staff tried to persuade you to get out of the pool so an influencer could have exclusive use.

saturnisturning · 25/12/2022 00:14

I’d have wanted to cannonball into the pool next to them.

Anamechangeisnotjustforchristmas · 25/12/2022 00:14

I was also extremely happy when a party of six arrived and got into the pool just as I was finally leaving

that's made me happy too!

DuplicateUserName · 25/12/2022 00:18

Good for you.

Not being bitchy? 😂😂😂

SparkyBlue · 25/12/2022 00:20

Fair play to you OP. I'm sick of all this bloody influencer nonsense. To be honest I'm find it turns me off a business if they start using local so called influencers

Orangepolentacake · 25/12/2022 00:21

I am your biggest fan op

allboysherebutme · 25/12/2022 00:25

Good for you x

Awrite · 25/12/2022 00:26

I would definitely complain. Staff joining in to try to bully a paying guest out of the pool.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 25/12/2022 00:27

Merryoldgoat · 25/12/2022 00:30

Fuck off, I am.

Would you get out of a pool for the OP?

I so would, therefore I'M her biggest fan.

Grapewrath · 25/12/2022 00:34

Hate stuff like this!
I was having a picnic once with my children at a local beauty spot and a bride and groom arrived. The rude photographer told me I’d ‘need to move for at least half an hour’ so he could get his pictures. Had he asked nicely I’d have considered it, but we had walked a long way to get there and my kids had just settled so I told him it’s a public place and he has no more rights over it than anyone else! I was really annoyed at his entitlement.
OP they are proper piss takers- well done for standing your ground

dolor · 25/12/2022 00:35

THIS IS ✨ GOLD ✨

nomoneyno · 25/12/2022 00:36

I had a famous "influencer/reality star" come into my place of work. She was so rude and vile. She spoke to me like I was a piece of crap. She was on geordie shore

We've also had another reality star who wasn't nasty but she was pretty snotty. It was brilliant when her card declined. She was on the house wives of Cheshire or whatever it's called

Aintnosupermum · 25/12/2022 00:37

As a lady in my 40s the whole influencer thing is totally lost on me. I never buy anything I see people hawking on these sites. Most of the videos I can see are filmed in a studio type room, which probably their spare bedroom. Why any brand would want to use these people baffles me.

I guess I’m not their target audience but let’s be real here. Most influencers seem to be based in Dubai and I don’t think it’s clicks they are selling. Once you know, you know.

Avrenim · 25/12/2022 00:38

Good for you. And second the TripAdvisor suggestion.

I'll be so glad when all this vacuous influencer rubbish finally dies a death and they all have to go and get real jobs...though it's difficult knowing what actual useful skills some of them have!

Hearmeout · 25/12/2022 00:39

I'd have insisted they legally recompense me appropriately to inconvenience myself by moving out of the leisure location I have paid to use.

they could supplement my room rate, for example.

Seeing as they're usually freeloading nobody's that would probably see them off until further notice.
