Something strange is going on… winter bugs

Is it just me or is something strange going on? Nearly everyone I know is sick. Levels are off the chart. My son had 10 in his class last Friday.

I’ve just had a really awful respiratory thing. It started with an awful sudden sore throat (not the usual place, lower down) then progressed to fevers for 3 days (I never get a fever, I’m an adult and can’t recall the last time), pain all over, chills, body tingles, the worst headache of my life that two types of painkiller didn’t touch.

Day 5, Now I’m left with a lingering cough and snotty nose and everything smells and tastes disgusting. Even air from outside stinks like the inside of my rotting nose! It’s gross. I’ve lost weight because everything tastes so disgusting. I look awful… grey skin and dark Circles. All my kids are poorly too but seem not as bad as me.

i also felt extremely delirious and depressed during this bug. I’ve never felt so down. It was like something switched in my brain. It was very sudden and hit me like a train. I’ve not had that before.

not covid as both tests I took negative.

im not one for conspiracy theories but is something going on? Is there a new strain of covid? I’ve never had a bug like this before. And I’ve never known so many people sick at one time. What on earth is going on? It can’t just be from lock downs many months ago.

People who are triple jabbed are either dropping dead when perfectly healthy

If they're dropping dead then they aren't perfectly healthy.

fairywhale · 26/12/2022 22:50

It's non-stop, it's harsher than ever, likely much more of it to come - thank the sheeple who at the end of the lockdowns were bleating for more.

Last spring everyone was still cautious about covid

This simply isn't true. For most people life went back to normal July 2021.

It's true for a lot of people. Last winter/spring DS school were still on staggered start/finish times. Back to normal in September term. It would take time for the exponential effect to grow to the tipping point we now have. Low immunity + multiple viruses + behaviours that promote spread.

Behaviour may have started to return more to normal last spring but not enough to start the snowball effect we have now. It takes time to spread viruses. Think of all those Covid charts showing how a virus spreads with no herd immunity and no vaccine. We are in that situation now with multiple common viruses. Perfect storm.

Untitledsquatboulder · 26/12/2022 23:32

Having staggered start/ finish times doesn't get away from the fact that children were all together in school from September 2021. And if the pandemic has taught us anything it's how quickly viruses spread. If "this" (typical peak in winter bugs) was "due to lockdown " you'd have seen it last winter too. You are entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.

Maybe I had flu then. It was not a cold. I guess I just thought flu was more lengthy (more than 6 days) and more severe. Don’t get me wrong I was v sick but there was no gastric component and if there was £50 at end of my bed I could have got it.

the smell of rotting up my nose is a bit weird and made me think of covid. Test says not though.

What you had sounds exactly like flu - sore throat, fever, chills, pains. It’s really horrible and that’s why I have a flu vaccination every year.
There’s nothing mysterious about all this illness, I work with infectious disease specialists and they warned at the beginning of winter that there would be flu, RSV, Covid and colds circulating all at the same time, so there would be a lot of ill people.

BabyOnBoard90 · 26/12/2022 23:48

Covid made people forget about all the other common viruses that are already in circulation

Just googled the 77th and I’m none the wiser…

LemonSwan · 27/12/2022 02:41

Definitely happening. We have had multiple consecutive illnesses including a 24hr vomiting bug for 4 weeks straight; 1 and half weeks of flu/COVID type thing, small reprieve, half week cold type thing, 24hr vomiting, 5 day nasty cold or COVID thing. It’s been ridiculous! Everyone falling left right and centre will all manner of weird illness. Even shingles in family. Suspected strep in babe.

My theories -

  • Could be COVID. Even early 2022 LFTs were no longer picking up COVID at my old work place. A whole years gone by so likely worse.
  • General population returning to true normal and Hand hygiene has gone downhill. Restaurants, pubs and retail seem to be where we are picking most things up.
  • Immune system being sheltered for multiple years.
  • People eating less well, not heating homes enough, not exercising or taking supplements enough. Basically general population health is declining due to cost of living.
DFWM · 27/12/2022 03:11

Since the middle of October, we have had croup, COVID, gastroenteritis, what they referred to as post COVID infection which floored us for 3 weeks (steroids and antibiotics didn't help at all!) Then strep throat.

It was only on Christmas eve that we all finally felt better! My immune system is useless at the best of times, but I have never been so ill.

I definitely believe it's due to lockdown and our immune systems being battered now that we are all mixing again. I'm just praying for a break now from being ill...

Ansumpasty · 27/12/2022 07:28

I don’t really see how it can be lockdown when we have been mixing again for so long now. Kids have been back to school for what, 2 years? 2 and a half?
100% Covid T cell exhaustion. There was clearly more to it and explains why world leaders and health experts were terrified of covid, why we spent billions and why the world was locked down. I’m starting to believe that they knew about the effects covid would have on the immune system. Without wanting to sound like a conspiracy theorist, I fear this is just the beginning.

PriOn1 · 27/12/2022 07:54

For the past two years, where I live, people have been staying home as soon as they had any signs of a respiratory virus coming on. Now people are back at work with colds, sneezing and coughing everywhere and I honestly wish they’d stay away as it’s obvious society still functioned when sick adults didn’t go into work so much.

I’m not sure where you live but life around is definitely didn’t go back to normal July 2021. I remember masks, sanitising and distancing still being quite prevalent this time last year. Even during summer 2022 we were still being relatively careful. I’d say it’s only been since then that it’s truly gone back to normal. This is the first year with school fairs, carol concerts, etc.

Um no. What a bizarre thing to suggest.

He's had COVID itself though, which is much more likely to have had some impact on his lungs than a jab.

Please don't use DH illness to make some obtuse point stuck to your own agenda. 😩
