Yorkshire puddings belong on a Christmas dinner

Christmas dinner - other than Yorkshires and pigs in blankets - is fucking disgusting, and that goes for every course

Elf is a crap movie.

Too many parents get over invested in their child believing in Santa. The reason they love Santa is because he brings a shit load of toys. As long as they’re still getting the toys they’re happy.

Nigel Slater’s Christmas cake will have you rethinking the whole hating thing. I hated Christmas cake until I met it.

FourChimneys · 22/12/2022 22:31

Those knitted or crocheted tops on letterboxes are naff and tacky.

There is no need to slaughter millions of turkeys etc to celebrate the supposed birth of a baby 2000+ years ago.

All babies are special, Jesus doesn't have a monopoly.

There is no such thing as an attractive fake tree.

The winter solstice is far more important and relevant than Christmas.

No Christmas goods should appear in shops until a couple of weeks into December.

Shops should be banned from playing Christmas music, except perhaps on Christmas eve.

TwentysixV · 22/12/2022 22:33

Real trees are so much nicer, fake trees are a bit depressing and miserable.

realsavagelike · 22/12/2022 22:34

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet , totally agree about the gift cards. I was in a shop casting about for a last minute extra gift for my 7 yr old and thinking how whatever I chose would almost certainly be set aside forever within a week. Then I saw the Roblox gift cards and knew that he would be genuinely thrilled and, best of all, it would take up NO SPACE.

MysweetAudrina · 22/12/2022 22:34

I have spent over 3k on presents for my family. Dh has probably spent similar. I love getting and giving presents. None of it is tat.

Ericaequites · 22/12/2022 22:36

A Christmas Story is not a good movie.
Santa/Father Christmas encourage unrealistic expectations and are annoying.
Elf on the Shelf is creepy.

birdling · 22/12/2022 22:36

MassiveSalad22 · 22/12/2022 19:59

😁 I do like it and it’s fun to sing. But I just imagine those whose favourite it is say so with a solemn face and then force you to listen to it 😄 I prefer something jolly but I hear you. It is good.

I really love it. If you sing it acapella in 4-part harmony, the key change from minor to major at the end of each verse is wonderful and sends shivers down my spine.
I especially enjoy singing the alto part, they have the best harmonies.

TheRedLip · 22/12/2022 22:39

Festive nail art always looks cheap and tacky. Yes, even the festive nail art that the wearer thinks 'looks classy' it really, really doesn't. There's no such thing as classy looking nail art, it's a contradiction of terms. I will make a grudging exception for the nail art designs at Dry By London though, but even then you need elegant fingers and nicely shaped nails to carry it off.

MrsRinaDecker · 22/12/2022 22:42

I’m a grown adult and still love receiving presents! It doesn’t have to be big or expensive though.. in fact I’m quite happy to receive a lot of the gifts most of mumsnet hates.
Sprouts are good if you don’t boil them.

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 22/12/2022 22:44

Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies are all disgusting.
Christmas dinner is shit. Glorified roast dinner - to which I have now and again cos I have to be in the mood for it. This year we're having party food/nibbles.
Christmas cards are pathetic.
Elf on the shelf is a waste of time.
Pantos are shit.
Christmas eve boxes are pointless.
Boxing day is better.
TV is shit at Christmas.
Tinsel is tacky, as are coloured lights outside a house.
The only decent Christmas film is home alone, the 1st original one.
Buying teachers Christmas presents is a no from me.
Other than that.. I love Christmas!

greenhousegal · 22/12/2022 22:44

A commercialised coma. Frenzy. Stress. Food wastage, screaming noisy kids. Hard on the wallet. Ungrateful recipients of gifts (if you buy them). Family bust ups. Awkwardness. Drunkenness. False jollity. Hangovers. Exhaustion.

And that's just for starters.

I often wish it was more like Thanksgiving. Well you've got the food coma with none of the shite commercialism. Could live with that.

Snugglemonkey · 22/12/2022 22:45

Headabovetheparakeet · 22/12/2022 19:36

I agree with this.

Definitely. We do not go totallyad, but part of the joy is lots of toys. We grew up poor, both myself and DH, but there was still a pile of toys for each of us from Santa. When I first heard Santa was not a real person, my first instinct was to disbelieve it, because I knew my parents could never afford to buy that pile of presents I got, plus my siblings got. I think that made me believe a few extra years.

I always like getting boxes of malteasers as gifts, i prefer it to expensive chocolate which is wasted on me.i agree about the expense, my friend got me a jam i had randomly mentioned liking ages b4 christmas and honestly it was a lovely gift x

miniaturepixieonacid · 22/12/2022 22:52

Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, son of God.

Presents should stop at age 21.

The following Christmas foods are horrible:
Mince pies, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, pigs in blankets, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, bread sauce.

I love Carol singers. As long as they don't sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Yorkshire puddings don't belong with Christmas dinner.

The TV (and watching TV on devices) should stay off for Christmas day until at least 7pm.

Chicken is better than turkey.

Sprouts are delicious.

Footiecahootie · 22/12/2022 22:54

It’s not the most wonderful time of the year

CraftyGin · 22/12/2022 22:56

Stompythedinosaur · 22/12/2022 19:30

The "something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read" rule of present giving lacks any joy.

Never seen that before, but I definitely subscribe!

Dahliasandtea · 22/12/2022 22:57

Christmas Day is always much nicer when it’s not celebrated on the 25th December

Boxing Day is better than Christmas Day, by far.

most presents are absolute shite that no one needs or wants.

pigs in blankets are crap
turkey is crap
Christmas pudding is crap.

Needhelp101 · 22/12/2022 22:58

I'm actually a big fan of shit Christmas presents. Gimme ALL the candles, socks and hand cream.

NFLwidow · 22/12/2022 22:58

lol.

CraftyGin · 22/12/2022 23:05

I have only read the first three pages, and not wanting to get into the cheese football debate, I agree with every single comment. I love being surrounded by fellow Grumpy Old Women.

I am a churchwarden and have had my fill of Christmas this year, with all the concerts and carol services. I just have to hobble over the line of Christmas morning.

I have been exhausted for at least a week and have no time for my family. I have persuaded one DC to go to his inlaws this year, much to DH's dismay. I can't persuade the other married one. I've also acquired two foster kids this year, which will change the dynamic.

No presents bought yet.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 22/12/2022 23:06

I bloody love Elf. And turkey. And Yorkshire puds.

Our Christmas will include all of the above for us, our adult kids, plus adult nieces and nephews and some aunts and uncles. 10 round the table all in and a few more in the evening.

We exchange presents (between us and the adult D.C. only). We will eat lovely food, drink wine or non alcoholic beverages as people prefer and play games/sing songs. A couple of us(me included) will attend 11am mass.

WithIcePlease · 22/12/2022 23:07

I've been wondering today if I should get some Christmas foodstuffs
But if it were that nice, I'd be eating it all year round 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rockingcloggs · 22/12/2022 23:08

@whatkatydid2013 Exactly! My son collects Lego. The expensive sets. Last year among other sets and other things he received Lego Titanic. He builds them and they are then displayed. Guess what?! We still spend lots of time together doing lovely things!

TokyoSushi · 22/12/2022 23:11

Pigs in blankets are rubbish, it's literally just a sausage wrapped in bacon. What's all the fuss, you could make one anytime!

Bigboysmademedoit · 22/12/2022 23:12

katienana · 22/12/2022 19:44

Anything other than turkey is wrong
People who don't like Christmas pudding are pathetic and have the palette of a child
Santa brings all the presents I don't need the credit from my own kids
Cool white lights are horrible
People who wait till after dinner to open presents are pretending to be posh and need to unclench
