Yorkshire puddings belong on a Christmas dinner

Christmas dinner - other than Yorkshires and pigs in blankets - is fucking disgusting, and that goes for every course

Elf is a crap movie.

Too many parents get over invested in their child believing in Santa. The reason they love Santa is because he brings a shit load of toys. As long as they’re still getting the toys they’re happy.

I have a read a boat load of the usual faux smug comments on social media this week, directed at people who spend a lot on their kids presents for Christmas saying 'its better to spend the money on activities and spending time with your children than buying tat.

A) people can do both.
B) Spending money doesn't = tat.

Yep we do both. One daughter has board games, books, ipad and Lego. Other daughter has art materials, Lego and sylvanian families. The sylvanians possibly come under tat but they were all second hand as was much of the Lego as we try and minimise new plastic toys where we can

A lot of christmas staple foods aren't very nice:
Mince pies
Christmas pudding
Christmas cake

That in spades

Susurrar · 22/12/2022 22:09

Oh I have another one that will be unpopular on MN.. I love the cheesy Christmas music, especially the tunes that really have nothing to do with Christmas, current favourite is Stay Another Day.

MarshallCleo · 22/12/2022 22:09

Out of interest what is the difference in cost of a beef roast to a Christmas dinner ? Just the cost of a Turkey???

emmetgirl · 22/12/2022 22:10

It's all a load of bollocks.

TroysMammy · 22/12/2022 22:11

Hate it all except the lunch/dinner. p

Why ask what you want for Christmas when you have to buy it, hand it over and receive the cash only for it to be wrapped up and gifted on the day! I can't really get excited about the hand held steamer I'm getting. A pointless exercise.

I detest the phrase "the big day". Yes it's hassle and expense for just one day.

alanabennett · 22/12/2022 22:12

People who buy mountains of gifts for their kids, and post the photos on social media, are chavs common as muck.

Spellegrin · 22/12/2022 22:12

We don't do xmas...it's so much easier to escape and forget all the shite. Hate the falseness of it all.

Needhelp101 · 22/12/2022 22:13

I'm actually loving Christmas this year because:

No adult presents
No Christmas cards (what's the point with the postal strikes?)
Decorated our big house plants rather than get a tree
Decided on a party tea rather than a Christmas dinner
Elves make a one night only appearance on Christmas Eve with pyjamas and a Christmas book
Die Hard is a Christmas watch
Blackadder's Christmas Carol is still damn funny
Ho ho ho 😁

ALSO!! Just remembered. Parents who message me in a strop because the kids have discussed is Santa real at school and my kid says it’s all a lie. She’s just being honest, we shouldn’t have to pretend every year because other parents think lying to their kids is fun.

I don't believe in god or religion but I wouldn't think it's ok for my child to go around telling others that god is made up because I'm not a twat

Santa isn't God

HollyDollyChristmas · 22/12/2022 22:18

Christmas dinner is for Christmas Day, if someone can’t visit you on the 25th it doesn’t mean you still give them the full dinner because you want them to eat your meal. No one wants three Christmas dinners.

I want children to know who their gifts are from so they can thank them accordingly.

Stopping gifts at 18 is mean.

NippyWoowoo · 22/12/2022 22:18

xmaslurgy · 22/12/2022 22:16

Santa isn't God

To you. To me they’re both make-believe. That’s my point.

lightisnotwhite · 22/12/2022 22:05

At the age if 51 I now actually like even the shit Christmas pop sings because I’ve listened to them for so many years. There meanings, lyrics and history just don’t matter. after so many years.

Carols have good tunes but the lyrics are poor.

Christmas would be easier and cheaper if you couldn’t buy anything Christmas related until a week before.

At the age of 53 I agree with you! I like them now to the point of playing them on my commute. Particularly drawn to Mud's 'lonely this Christmas' for some reason. Played 3 times this morning.
(The exception being Wham! 'last Christmas' which I still loathe.)

birder · 22/12/2022 22:18

Love Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies.

The 'Stay Another Day' video on TV is the highlight of Christmas.

FancyFanny · 22/12/2022 22:19

Hoplesscynic · 22/12/2022 22:09

That in spades

OMG I totally disagree- I could eat those things till they came out of my ears! Especially my mum's christmas cake- it's divide with a big wedge of wensleydale!

aintnothinbutagstring · 22/12/2022 22:19

Christmas cake is only acceptable if homemade and you've sank a bottle of whiskey/brandy/sherry into it - good with cheese.

Cheese board is the best thing about Christmas food.

Creamy christmas drinks are like sick and should be banned.

If you work in a primary school at christmas - it's like ten circle of hell.

Christmas dinner is only made palatable by the existence of super crispy roast potatoes and a decent gravy (not bisto).

Any meat is better than turkey - i'll never understand people that spend £££ on a turkey.

If you buy anything other than turkey - no need for bread sauce which messes with the gravy and looks like cat vomit.

I love brussel sprouts

susiesuelou · 22/12/2022 22:20

Christmas Eve boxes are a load of pointless shite. What is the point? I mean seriously. Aren't the kids getting enough stuff on Christmas Day without needing a pre Christmas Day box of shite? 🤨

susiesuelou · 22/12/2022 22:22

Oh and mince pies and Christmas pudding are vile

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 22/12/2022 22:23

Christmas Pudding is jank.
As are mince pies.

Elf on a shelf and Christmas Eve Boxes are daft and make those on low incomes feel even more guilty , particularly as they're a major topic of conversation that kids talk about at primary school from the 1st of December.

These eco-friendly crackers contain shite.

Fifi00 · 22/12/2022 22:25

Mince pies are gross also Christmas puddings. Christmas is a farce forced to spend time with extended relatives you don't really see throughout the year and purchase presents for. Christmas is now commercialism one upmanship and designed to put people into debt.

Bah humbug!!

aintnothinbutagstring · 22/12/2022 22:25

eco friendly crackers are awful

HollyDollyChristmas · 22/12/2022 22:28

Decorations at work are pointless. I tell colleagues not to decorate my desk.

ecosystem · 22/12/2022 22:29

Your post and comments made me laugh = although I still believe in Santa and love Cheesy footballs. My Xmas unpopular opinions are

  • I'd rather go to the pub than spend all day in with relatives - that might be a popular one
  • I'm 43 and want a stocking.
  • Brussel sprouts are the best thing on the Christmas dinner plate.
Mydogatemypurse · 22/12/2022 22:31

Panto, families in matching pyjamas, the photos of excessive presents.
Cheesy footballs are horrible.
I dont really like pigs in blankets, but i dont like sausages in general 😕
I love all the rest of the food and I like Love Actually ha
