AIBU to not wrap stocking presents?!?

I never had presents in my stocking wrapped when I was a kid so I’ve just done the same with my own children, never occurred to me to do any different.

However my husband just asked me when we were going to wrap the stocking presents? Apparently he always had his stocking presents wrapped as a kid.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years?!? Our oldest is 7 so not sure why husband has never mentioned it before but I’m now thinking it might be nice if we did, it would certainly slow down the stocking opening and give us a bit more time in bed!

I’m interested to see whats the norm? Do you wrap or not?!?

YANBU = Unwrapped
YABU = wrapped

The stocking is the wrapping.

This. We've never wrapped stocking presents.

UnicornMumcraft · 23/12/2022 09:10

We don’t wrap stocking gifts here. Mine were wrapped when I was a kid, but husband’s weren’t. His way seemed easier and less wasteful so we went with that. There’s still plenty of magic and excitement!

misskatamari · 23/12/2022 09:11

This isn’t a right or wrong type question, people just do things differently. Mine weren’t wrapped as a kid. We do wrap them now for our own. I don’t think DHs parents wrapped theirs 🤷🏻‍♀️ just do whatever you want and can be arsed with 😄

RAINSh0wers · 23/12/2022 09:13

We wrap them. Mine were always wrapped, my parents did the stockings to buy themselves half hour wake up time while we sat on their bed and rummaged through everything. I do the same, so we can have a coffee and feel a bit more human while the kids are distracted.

Except the chocolate coins. For some reason they go in the foot of the stocking and are never wrapped!

StrawberryWater · 23/12/2022 09:17

I never wrap stocking presents.

ShaunaTheSheep · 23/12/2022 09:22

Always wrapped here.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/12/2022 09:23

Wrap, in Santa paper.

honeylulu · 23/12/2022 09:26

Mine weren't wrapped as a child but i heard from people at school that theirs were wrapped and I was jealous 😂

So I've always wrapped my children's stocking presents except the chocolate coins. My husband and I do each other a stocking and we wrap too. It's not right or wrong but I just think it's nicer. I always buy too much and it's brimming over the stocking so the wrapping holds the excitement of the unknown a bit longer.

I get it's bad for the environment to use extra paper blah blah but, let's face it, when you've produced children into the western world, that's the worst thing you can do for your carbon footprint anyway. A few bits of paper pales away into insignificance.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 23/12/2022 09:26

I wrap some but not others.

lollipoprainbow · 23/12/2022 09:48

Yes always wrap stocking presents, the main joy for my dd is opening loads ! If the presents weren't wrapped I think she'd be disappointed.

piglet81 · 23/12/2022 09:51

Chocolate coins and satsuma not wrapped. Everything else wrapped, but only roughly!

PolkaDotMankini · 23/12/2022 09:58

YABU. I wrap - it's fiddly but more fun guessing what the odd-shaped lumps are. I also use recyclable wrapping paper and paper tape so it's not too bad. Too late for this year but has cute Christmas themed tape: www.babipur.co.uk/search/?q=paper%20tape

Haven't RTFT, but how do you get as far as having a 7 year old and not have either agreed on what's wrapped or not?
We wrap everything! Different colour paper for Santa versus non Santa

Unwrapped here. Mine were unwrapped as a child too. Something so magical about seeing a cuddly toy peeking its head out of the top, reaching in and seeing what comes out.

Maybe there is also something about the shape of the stocking? Mine was long but skinny so you couldn't see everything if you looked in from the top (and I never did as that would spoil the surprise). It was always little bits in the stocking with chocolate coins in the toe (and that's how I knew I'd come to the end when the chocolate coins came out). Father Christmas only brought little stocking gifts, no bigger presents. I do the same now with DS.

The only things that were ever wrapped were if they were a bit more delicate like a china / glass ornament.

However your traditions are is what makes it magical in the anticipation. There is no 'right' way for wrapped / unwrapped. Keep doing whatever you have been doing.

YABU! The crinkling of a stocking full of wrapped presents is one of the best things about Christmas.

This!

It makes the whole stocking part take a little longer too. If you don’t wrap the presents, your dc may just tip the whole stocking upside down so it all falls out out at once (my DN’s do that).

I wrap my DS’s stocking gifts in red tissue paper. It disguises what is inside, but isn’t too bulky.

MumofSpud · 23/12/2022 12:01

I do a mix of wrapped and unwrapped
