AIBU to not wrap stocking presents?!?

I never had presents in my stocking wrapped when I was a kid so I’ve just done the same with my own children, never occurred to me to do any different.

However my husband just asked me when we were going to wrap the stocking presents? Apparently he always had his stocking presents wrapped as a kid.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years?!? Our oldest is 7 so not sure why husband has never mentioned it before but I’m now thinking it might be nice if we did, it would certainly slow down the stocking opening and give us a bit more time in bed!

I’m interested to see whats the norm? Do you wrap or not?!?

YANBU = Unwrapped
YABU = wrapped

I always wrap.Where's the excitement in just tipping their stocking onto the bed in the morning ?

Jinglebellrocks · 22/12/2022 19:24

We do stockings downstairs too as they are hung together for me, dh and the dcs.

Newnamenewname109870 · 22/12/2022 19:24

I always have but doesn’t mean you should! Better for the environment not to wrap them and it makes it obvious it’s from Santa! Those elves made everything from scratch.

Currently I have to make sure his wrapping paper is different to ours 😂

toastfiend · 22/12/2022 19:24

We wrap most stocking presents, although I leave edible things and stuff like plastic dinosaurs/stuffed toys/bath bombs unwrapped, but everything else is wrapped. I agree with the PP who said that the anticipation brought about by the crinkle of wrapping paper in a stocking is one of the best bits of Christmas. I'd find a stocking full of unwrapped stuff underwhelming as seconds and the excitement is over, but that's personal preference. Father Christmas brings some of the big presents in this house, too, so I definitely want to wrap those ones to prolong the excitement a bit.

Ah, I see, that's different. I thought pp meant dc go down to stockings while parents stay upstairs.

Nooo. It take me an age to get upright in a morning. So a little time unwrapping the stockings gives me chance get my barings! We all go down together. The run into the living room and watching them stop dead and drop mouths is the best part of Christmas for me

BaileySharp · 22/12/2022 19:26

I think both are quite common! We wrap for the most part (although this year we have soke difficult to wrap bits that might end up unwrapped). So neither is 'wrong'.

Definitely wrap, it gives us extra time in bed while they unwrap.

Literally the only reason they even have a stocking 🤣

FortyFacedFuckers · 22/12/2022 19:28

I wrap them!! My Ds is now 17 but he still enjoys trying to guess what each stocking filler is before unwrapping!

DC bring stockings into my room. Put hand in stocking. Dig around and pick something. Pull it out. Repeat until stocking is empty.

Perfectly magical.

Albgo · 22/12/2022 19:32

This is hurting my brain. 🤣
It never occurred to me that people didn't wrap stocking presents.
Mine were always wrapped as a child and I wrap my little boy's now.

OMG is unwrapped stockings even a thing???? I just assumed that everyone wraps up the stocking gifts!! What's the point if not?! Where's the excitement????

I cannot be fagged to wrap up a pencil, some hair bobbles, a bath bomb, a tube of sweets etc x25 (x5 children) or however many little things fit in a stocking.

My kids have plenty of wrapped gifts in their Santa sacks.

Teach your kids not to tip. Mine never have, and I never did as a child. One item pulled out at a time.

Exactly my reaction to my husband when he suggested we should wrap! I never thought it was a thing! Apparently a lot of people do though! Seems to be the majority from the votes so far!

I wrap stockings, but, donyour children still believe? Because to suddenly change something from Santa now may make them question why which may lead to more questions! I would just stick with unwrapped now I think

Craftybodger · 22/12/2022 19:45

Wrapped!! Adds to the wonder and takes longer to open and explore.

Mine all still believe. This is one of the things putting me off though, as the 7 and 5 year old might wonder why things have changed (although it probably won’t be a big deal as long as they still get the presents! 😂)Might be a nice thing to start for or 3 and 1 year old though?

I wrap most stocking things, chocolates and lush bath bombs etc I don't. Otherwise you just open the stocking look inside and can see everything! I like a leisurely opening in bed with a cup of good coffee, no wrapping means the stocking would be done before the coffee was ready 😁

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 22/12/2022 20:07

I wonder if the divide between wrapped/unwrapped has any correlation to what people put in stockings.
A few PPs have said that they wrap every thing except the small bits like xyz. The small bits are the only things in my DCs stockings. The biggest things this year are a candle in a jar (Primark not Yankee) for DS1 and hair dye for DS2.

I was wondering this too. Mine (and now my kids) was more ‘fun’ items, yo-yo, ball, chocolate, novelty soap, furry pen etc nothing of any real value. I got wrapped presents downstairs from Father Christmas and family.

However my husband said his stocking was the only thing he got from Father Christmas so would have a few nicer gifts cassettes etc Then he just got a couple of wrapped presents from family under the tree.

YABU! The crinkling of a stocking full of wrapped presents is one of the best things about Christmas.

This.

Magenta65 · 22/12/2022 20:46

Always unwrapped but if there’s special bits like a pair of studs etc then those are wrapped. What’s the point of wrapping bits like chocolate and socks

LaMariposa · 22/12/2022 20:48

We have a mix.
Unwrapped - chocolate coins, mini box of coco pops, orange, chocolate Santa, Christmas themed pencil toppers/soft toys peeking out the top
Wrapped in tissue paper it came in - bath bomb
In normal paper - everything else.

Fuckitydoodah · 22/12/2022 20:52

We never had ours wrapped as children. I did wrap my DC's when they were toddlers and didn't get so much. I can't be arsed any more. It would take ages and seems like a waste of paper.

Purplechicken207 · 22/12/2022 20:57

I wrap the easy to wrap ones (and yes I even have different paper that I keep hidden away because it's from santa 🙄)....but I don't wrap anything weirdly shaped. So some choc coins lobbed in, a little choc santa. I bought a box of 6 bath toys and split between the kids, so just chucked a few loose ones into each stocking. I wouldn't wrap a mini cuddly toy. But I did wrap a little book, square toy for the baby, bath bomb in little box etc. Personally I kind of like the part wrapped/part unwrapped mix

mikado1 · 22/12/2022 21:02

Wrt a sudden change, perhaps Santa us trying to be more eco-conscious?!
