AIBU to not wrap stocking presents?!?

SEMPA1234567 · 22/12/2022 18:41

I never had presents in my stocking wrapped when I was a kid so I’ve just done the same with my own children, never occurred to me to do any different.

However my husband just asked me when we were going to wrap the stocking presents? Apparently he always had his stocking presents wrapped as a kid.

Have I been doing it wrong all these years?!? Our oldest is 7 so not sure why husband has never mentioned it before but I’m now thinking it might be nice if we did, it would certainly slow down the stocking opening and give us a bit more time in bed!

I’m interested to see whats the norm? Do you wrap or not?!?

YANBU = Unwrapped
YABU = wrapped

In the Peppa pig episode they have them unwrapped too!

I watched this one earlier 🤣

catsonahottinroof · 22/12/2022 18:56

I've always wrapped most of them as that's what my mum did with ours. I do think it makes it more exciting and obviously takes more time. If there are lots of items, I might not bother with some of the cheaper food things, or very small things eg like a pen.

MissDollyMix · 22/12/2022 18:57

I’ve been sitting here wrapping stocking gifts for the best part of three ducking hours now!! 😖 So NO! Don’t do it!! My DM has been watching me this whole time (can’t do it at home because of the beast little eyes on me) she’s not helping with the wrapping but providing mugs of tea and plenty of knowing “we’ll I never did that for you!”
Thing is, I like to wrap the stocking presents because it means they take longer to open and my kids are very keen that the wrapped presents add to the magic of it all (they’re probably both past the believing stage) So, there’s some reasons to wrap but in all honestly, I definitely wouldn’t judge you if you didn’t!!

amylou8 · 22/12/2022 18:58

Always wrapped them, and mine were wrapped as a kid too. Is it not a bit quick just pulling them out the stocking, surely the suprise is unwrapping each one individually. I won't argue its a real pain in the arse to do (bloody Santa).

mikado1 · 22/12/2022 18:59

It's really exciting nonetheless, as a pp said to peep or poke in and see what you get! I never had different, which is probably a big part of it. We tried Santa gifts wrapped here one year and it really slowed down and took from the excitement as it took dc forever to open it, too young perhaps, rather than enter the room and immediately see what he had and run in.
Plus packaging..

WondrousWinger · 22/12/2022 18:59

Hell will freeze over before I spend my time wrapping packets of millions, gold coins, new pants and the other random small bits they get in their stocking.

There is plenty of unwrapping enjoyment in their gifts under the tree and from family.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 22/12/2022 19:01

Some things get scrunched in a bit of tissue paper but nothing is properly wrapped.

somethinsomethin · 22/12/2022 19:01

Always unwrapped when I was wee so I've always done unwrapped but I'm quite tempted to wrap this year just because they're a bit older so have less presents to actually open.

mikado1 · 22/12/2022 19:02

Not quick amylou as lots of little bits and pieces like packed in.

Xiaoxiong · 22/12/2022 19:03

DH and I have this argument every year, and every year he sits there and wraps every single stocking present as I witter on about how it's total overkill and his time could be better used doing all the other 1000 things that need doing. Feels like a rod for your own back but as long as it's his back not mine and he does 50% of the rest of what's needed, then I just shrug.

He does way more of the Christmas stuff than I do anyway so I just do what I enjoy (mainly eating...)

Three hours just on stockings?! How big are your stockings Xmas Shock

JennyForeigner · 22/12/2022 19:10

My mum has always done the most amazing stockings, with everything beautiful wrapped in a different colour of tissue paper each.

Our oldest is now three and in his first year of really getting Christmas. I am beginning to comprehend just how much effort matching up is going to take.

catgirl1976 · 22/12/2022 19:12

Wrapped because it takes them longer to open the stocking and you get a bit more of lie in or at lest chance to come round before you have to go downstairs for the main event

Wilkolampshade · 22/12/2022 19:13

Wrapped. Mine were as a kid, and it would seem a bit naked not to. The stocking's not the wrap?!? It's a stocking!! We also use a pair of tights and we love the knobbly deformed sausage of American Tan it makes outside their bedroom door on Christmas morning. The tights make an extra shimmery noise against the wrapping paper when it moves too.
My girls are both over 20 and I still do them a leg each which they cart into my bedroom laughing on Christmas morning.
God I love it, and them.

What age are your kids? I wouldn't miss this for the world, we all go down together.

HaggisBurger · 22/12/2022 19:17

My mum didn’t wrap our presents in our “stocking” (a pillow case). One of greatest gifts ever. Saved me hours over the last 19 years. Only time it was a problem was when staying at MIL’s and SIL did it differently.

i also put basically ALL presents in my kids “stocking “ (large personalised Santa sack) bar say one book or a game. And still do this despite the fact the youngest is 14 and the eldest is an adult (they like it!). They stick their hand in and see what comes out. Love it.

Mine are 8 and 11 now and they bring their stocking full of wrapped presents into our room and unwrap them on the bed. That's why I do it so I don't need to get up straight away!

Reugny · 22/12/2022 19:19

I placed stuff in each stocking.

Then decided they were staying unwrapped as it is a waste of time and wrapping paper.

SEMPA1234567 · 22/12/2022 19:20

Wow! Thank you for all the replies so far! Some have really made me chuckle! 😂 I think I may be coming round to the idea of wrapping! I like that it slows the whole thing down and makes everything a bit more magical! However I’m still put off by the amount of effort this is going to require! (We have 4 kids with very large stockings 😂) Maybe a job for my husband (it was his idea!)

Unwrapped

catgirl1976 · 22/12/2022 19:22

@mikado1 we do all go down together but he has the stocking in his room. And the cats stocking. And they open those then comes in and show us what he got and then we go downstairs

tiredfriday · 22/12/2022 19:22

Wrapped!

Ah, I see, that's different. I thought pp meant dc go down to stockings while parents stay upstairs.

Jinglebellrocks · 22/12/2022 19:23

Definitely all stocking presents wrapped, tube sweets made into crackers, the only thing I don’t wrap in the stocking are Cadbury choc puds, choc snowmen, mini Santa’s and candy canes.

LunaLoveFood · 22/12/2022 19:23

Definitely wrap, it gives us extra time in bed while they unwrap.
