To call in sick to work?

autienotnaughty · 21/12/2022 20:25

Started last night with a tickly cough. Felt progressively worse today (not at work today so took it easy) Went to bed a couple of hours ago. My symptoms are -
Fatigue
Sore throat
Headache/light/noise sensitivity
Block sinuses
Cough/coughing up phlegm
Rattling chest
Nausea

I hate calling in sick. This year I've had 1 day off for a cold. 1 day off due to prolapsed disc. 4 days off with covid and 6 weeks (signed off) after a significant trauma. It's also hard because we are customer service and if I'm not there cover needs to be found or we can't open. I work in a library so it is a lot of elderly customers plus a toddler group.

What would you do? Also better to text manager at home tonight or wait till morning ?

Message tonight
Dont go in - No-one wants to catch your illness just in time for Christmas !

Jobsagoodun1 · 21/12/2022 20:26

I don’t think anyone would want to catch what you have just before Xmas. I would ring in!!

unvillage · 21/12/2022 20:33

Should have messaged a couple of hours ago to let your manager find cover in time to open! Don't feel guilty about calling in, no one wants your bug right before Christmas, colleagues or public.

YANBU to call in sick, OP.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Call in sick. Nobody likes doing it but I've had all your symptoms the last 3 days and wouldn't have been thanked passing my germs on.

I do get awful worry about being off sick and get irrational thoughts about losing my job. And the awkward welfare call that ensues. Urgh, sorry!

Don't feel guilty, if only the person in our office had stayed home the rest of us might not have caught the bug!

BigsyMalone · 22/12/2022 07:46

Awww do not worry OP. Rest up x

You'd feel more guilty if customers and colleagues all caught it right before Christmas. You've done the right thing.

Beautifulsunflowers · 22/12/2022 07:49

Ive got two colleagues who are poorly but are traipsing into work every day complaining about how ill they feel. Been happening all week - guess what? I now feel a sore throat starting……I’m not impressed they’ve carried on coming to work and I hate the culture at my place that they’re bravely fighting through! Wish they’d stayed at home and kept their germs to themselves!
glad you’ve phoned in op, wishing you better soon

Stay off. Don't feel guilty. 8 out of my team of 10 nurses have flu just now and are off. We're just doing the best we can
