To wonder how hard it is to produce cards for Gran

In Tesco and Card Factory today. I couldn't find one single card for 'Gran', (or Auntie, actually)

I could get one if I had a 'special cat'.

I could send a different one to every dog on my street.

Any children with same sex parents are sorted.

If you need one for a 'Niece and Her Partner' then Card Factory is your friend.

But if your kid needs one for their 'Gran', you can forget it! All the other female grandparent variations were there.

I'm in Scotland. Is that the difference? Are Gran's rare in the rest of the UK?

This has always annoyed me - Nan & granddad, special nanny/granny, never just 'gran'!

MrsBrandonspiano · 20/12/2022 19:18

We just go for Granny, the long version.

Jeschara · 20/12/2022 19:19

I am Gran, I know what you mean.

Doublechins · 20/12/2022 19:20

I have a gran, my kids a great gran. always been able to get them in card factory.

Womencanlift · 20/12/2022 19:21

Yes!!! Both of my lovely grans are no longer with us but agree it was always so hard to get one. Would never get a Granny/Grandma/Nan one as that’s not what they were

ILoveeCakes · 20/12/2022 19:22

"Nannies" are goats. Or the women who look after rich kids

Danikm151 · 20/12/2022 19:22

Loads of Gran in the card factory or Nannie. I wanted Nanny and found one

Mykittensmittens · 20/12/2022 19:23

Having a welsh Nain and Taid is harder!

RamsayEaster · 20/12/2022 19:23

I always struggled to get Grandma in a card it’s slowly getting better

Plenty of Nanna cards - do people really spell it like that ?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/12/2022 19:24

I know what you mean - I have a 'Grannie' (not a Granny!) and very very rarely see a card with that on.

JorisBonson · 20/12/2022 19:24

Yes OP! My gran in Scotland has to make do with granny / grandma / nan cards. Infuriating.

StillWeRise · 20/12/2022 19:25

I'm afraid they do

healthadvice123 · 20/12/2022 19:25

Loads of gran usually in england and hardly any nan, usually nanna etc
More people i know use nan than anything else

WhatALotOfAFussAboutNothing · 20/12/2022 19:25

I’ve always thought Gran/Granny/Grandma sounded harsh and distant whereas Nan/Nana/Nanny sounded cosy 😂 It’s interesting how people prefer their own names for same relative!

Whataretheodds · 20/12/2022 19:25

Suggest Moonpig/funky pigeon or one without a title on the front

How else would you spell it? Nana?

cptartapp · 20/12/2022 19:27

I've found Gran cards in Tesco before, but it's usually been a choice of one. They tend to be the smaller cheaper cards for some reason.

bakewellbride · 20/12/2022 19:27

MIL is Mammar. Try finding that anywhere!

Popoo · 20/12/2022 19:27

I suspect the issue is the time of the year. Not sure if you're looking for a Xmas card or a birthday card for Gran. If it's Xmas you've left it a bit late and are just seeing all the Xmas cards that no-one else wanted, and if it's birthday, there's always a really limited range of anything but Xmas cards closer to Xmas (my sister's birthday is just before Xmas and I have to try and remember to get her a card a couple of months early otherwise there's that can be a struggle, and sister definitely isn't a rare card the rest of the year).

leftitabitlate22 · 20/12/2022 19:28

I saw a card in Tesco's yesterday that had a blank space and came with a set of stickers with all the gran,Nan, grandma, nanny, granny etc variations on and you just chose the one you wanted to stick in the gap!

rainingcats · 20/12/2022 19:30

My parents are ‘Nana and Taid’ so almost impossible to find suitable cards. Normally have to get a ‘to my grandparents …’ or a ‘from the grandchildren’ card

TerraNostra · 20/12/2022 19:30

I remember as a student in England looking at the cards and wondering why everyone must be so rich and posh to need cards for “Nanny”.

I’d grown up in Scotland where it was mostly Gran, Granny and Nana. I’d never heard anyone describe their grandmother as “Nanny”! We didn’t have Nanny cards in the shops at home, but you are absolutely right OP, “Gran” ones were hard to come by too, I do remember that.
Moonpig is the way forward now, that’s what we do for MIL, who is “Grannie”.

Yes, otherwise it would be Na-Na

I can't express how much I loathe this sentiment. It's regional. Educate yourself.
