To wonder how hard it is to produce cards for Gran

In Tesco and Card Factory today. I couldn't find one single card for 'Gran', (or Auntie, actually)

I could get one if I had a 'special cat'.

I could send a different one to every dog on my street.

Any children with same sex parents are sorted.

If you need one for a 'Niece and Her Partner' then Card Factory is your friend.

But if your kid needs one for their 'Gran', you can forget it! All the other female grandparent variations were there.

I'm in Scotland. Is that the difference? Are Gran's rare in the rest of the UK?

Yep, wholeheartedly agree. Have been struggling with this my whole life, having a gran who will only be called gran (also in Scotland and we would never say nan, nana, nanny, or even grandma). Granny is the only other option where I'm from, but my gran always said it sounded too "old" and hated it, so I can't even pick up a granny card which I occasionally find! And she'd be mortally offended if she got a generic birthday card as she always buys for "daughter and son-in-law", "granddaughter", "grandson", "great granddaughter", etc. She fully deserves a "gran" card but it can take looking in about 9 shops to find one measly option, then sometimes the picture will be something I know she'd hate 😂 (she's scared of cats, for example). The search goes on.

It is also tricky finding one for "papa", which again, I think is probably more common in Scotland. It's all "grandpa", "grandad" and "grandfather".

These problems are continuing for me and my own children as my parents are also "gran" and "papa" to them! At least they'll have the option of creating one online which I didn't have most of my life!

I can't express how much I loathe this sentiment. It's regional. Educate yourself.

Agree, It's blatant snobbery too. There isn't a right or wrong name for your grandmother, and only the socially insecure think it's appropriate to 'correct' other people about this sort of thing.

Yeah I would spell it Nana

Nanna to me would be said nan then na

Maybe a Scottish way of saying 🫣

HouseofHolbein · 20/12/2022 20:08

I'm a midlander. It's not easy finding cards for mom rather than mum. Also finding a card for Mothering Sunday rather than Mother's Day.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 20/12/2022 20:09

DD calls her grandmother Mimi. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We just go for Granny, the long version.

I couldn’t even find Granny. Had to get Grandma.

Alumpyreflection · 20/12/2022 20:11

My biggest beef is finding a card for my 'Aunty' not my 'Auntie'.

Yeah, I'm officially that person and nope, I'm not ashamed.

ChristmasCaroline · 20/12/2022 20:13

Yes! It’s really annoying. We’re in Scotland and always had a granny / gran

Yolanda524 · 20/12/2022 20:16

I always find a gran card in Clinton’s the one I find hard to find is Grandpa. Lots of Grandads but hardly any Grandpas.
My MIL is known as Mamma and that is non existent so it has to be a Moonpig for her.

Ah, you see I'm from the SE of England, Nana would rhyme with banana- Na(h)-Na(h), B-na(h)-na(h).

Nanna- Nan-na(h).

But guess it's all down to dialect.

Lyricallie · 20/12/2022 20:18

Another Scottish person and I really struggle for a Gran card. I usually give up and go generic. I also tried card factory and Tesco!

Just go online. It’s easier than positing on Mumsnet!

I always struggle to get mum and step-dad/dad and step mum. They have loads that say just mum or just dad, or mum and dad. Surely nowadays it's very common to have parents who are separated and have new partners.

I had to get 'from our home to yours' for my Mum & Stepdad this year.

I think some of the variation is regional, it's very hard to find a 'Mam' card where I live now, but extremely common where I'm originally from - in fact it's harder to find 'Mum' there sometimes.

Made me chuckle that our local co-op this year only had one Husband card in stock, and it was in small print 'from the man that loves you'. Great to have the option, but I very nearly bought it and I wonder how many other Women did the same Grin

Pinkbananas01 · 20/12/2022 20:23

I'm in scotland & its difficult to fine gran cards - occasionally in card factory or Sainsburys, I do tend to buy them now if I spot them as never seem to be in stock when needed!

RobinRobinMouse · 20/12/2022 20:25

Granny has proved almost impossible to find this year, had to improvise and buy Gran from the card factory and add on the 'ny' with a silver pen.

Minikievs · 20/12/2022 20:26

Ha! I have this rage every year!

My Nana was Nana. When I was growing up (30-40 years ago) you couldn't get Nana cards.
Now my mum is Granny. I can find loads of Nana cards and not a single Granny one.

I think there's some sort of universal law about never being able to find a card with the name of your Grandma / Nanna / Nanny / Gran on it, regardless of what she's called.

It's some kind of weird woo shit.

dementedpixie · 20/12/2022 20:26

I can usually find 1 in asda occasionally
Dhs mum is known as nannie/nanny and I still find it hard to say as mine were always gran

WonderingWanda · 20/12/2022 20:26

Surely 'Gran' would love a nice homemade card anyway?

Floralnomad · 20/12/2022 20:27

We struggled to find a Nan card ( not nanna or nanny ) , it’s just plain Nan , and in the end had to go for one with a lot of gushing sentiment about how great the ‘Nan’ is which my daughter was loathe to put her name to . Why can’t you find any Nan cards that just say Happy Christmas .

MontageOfHeck · 20/12/2022 20:27

I’m SE and we use “Nana”. But never ANY in our local Card Factory…it’s always Nanna.

Like a PP I was thrilled to find a card with the stickers you add to personalise for your family (and that had Nain and Taid!).

Even more difficult this year is finding a card for Great Grandparents.

grinchingit · 20/12/2022 20:31

WonderingWanda · 20/12/2022 20:26

And she'll probably get some, but not from my 18yo son Grin

WonderingWanda · 20/12/2022 20:36

@grinchingit 🤣 laughing my head off now. That does change things slightly.

Obviously at 18 I think you should to make it his problem to source and appropriate cars in future!

DarkOphelia · 20/12/2022 20:36

I'm in the North of England. I can't find Grandma, Great Grandma, or Grandpa anywhere.

LovelyRachel · 20/12/2022 20:37

I don't recommend buying them online. I did at the end of November and they still aren't here due to RM Strikes :(

The Range has a good selection if nearby. Found a Gran and a Granny card in there just now x

rainbowandglitter · 20/12/2022 20:48

I can never find a nanny card. She refuses to be called gran or granny as she says they sound old.
