To wonder how hard it is to produce cards for Gran

grinchingit · 20/12/2022 19:11

In Tesco and Card Factory today. I couldn't find one single card for 'Gran', (or Auntie, actually)

I could get one if I had a 'special cat'.

I could send a different one to every dog on my street.

Any children with same sex parents are sorted.

If you need one for a 'Niece and Her Partner' then Card Factory is your friend.

But if your kid needs one for their 'Gran', you can forget it! All the other female grandparent variations were there.

I'm in Scotland. Is that the difference? Are Gran's rare in the rest of the UK?

I've always struggled
To find 'granny cards', she is neither a nanny or a nan but granny!

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 20/12/2022 19:39

We're in NI and it's so difficult to find Granny and Granda cards!

spiderontheceiling · 20/12/2022 19:39

Usually Asda and Card Factory are my source for "Gran" or "Granny" cards (fortunately she doesn't mind which) but this year they didn't have any and I eventually had a choice of one in Tesco.
Trying to find a "Great Granny" one back when I needed it was near impossible even just for birthdays. I once asked an assistant in Card Factory and she clearly misunderstood the generational aspect of my request as she replied that she though they might have one which said "to a super Granny".

Rosieisposy · 20/12/2022 19:40

It isn’t that regional.

When people claim they simply don’t know that people have different names for grandparents they are trying to show they don’t mix with anyone who does anything as common as using Nanny for a grandparent, which is nonsense. I don’t know any Americans but I know they call rubbish garbage and I don’t personally know any Australians but am familiar with Sheila and G’day.

Gran is fine. As is Nan, Nannie, Nana.

NoodieRoodie · 20/12/2022 19:42

Try looking for gran and also grandmother ones!!!! Card factory have generally come up trumps even if it meant grandmother probably got the same birthday one most years😂 And before anyone asks, grandmother was a joke (or started that way) when I'd been chatting to my gran one day and she said that she'd always fancied been a grandmother in the style of a Victorian. So when I had children that's what they called her and now my children assume that when they have children I'll be granny and my mum will get promoted to grandmother

ThingsChristmasJumper · 20/12/2022 19:42

See also grandpa rather than grandad.

OliviaFlaversham · 20/12/2022 19:44

We couldn’t find a grandad one in a large Sainsburys. There were Nan and Grandad, Grandma and Grandad, Nan, Grandma, Goddaughter, nephew…but no Grandad one!

Not sure I’ve seen Gran either actually!

Minniem2020 · 20/12/2022 19:46

Yep, we have this with Nana, plenty of Nannas though.

TheMoth · 20/12/2022 19:46

Nain is easy. You just get a nan one, then add an I. Taid is almost impossible.

ConfusedGin · 20/12/2022 19:46

ThingsChristmasJumper · 20/12/2022 19:42

See also grandpa rather than grandad.

Was coming to say exactly this! I understand not finding Poppa or Pampy cards (although I have used the sticker one mentioned above in the past) but Grandpa seems a common variation to have none available

Minniem2020 · 20/12/2022 19:46

Yep, we have this with Nana, plenty of Nannas though.

We have Nanas in our family and I can never ever find a card 🙄

Saxiee · 20/12/2022 19:48

Personally hate that it's "grandma and grandad" not "grandma and granddad"

If it's grandad than it should be granma. If it's grandma then it's granddad.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 20/12/2022 19:48

Never once found one for Amma. Should probably have tried Icelandic card shops. (We're not Icelandic, we just called my grandmother that for some reason probably related to grandchild #1's early pronunciation abilities.)

Jellyjam36 · 20/12/2022 19:49

I struggle to find Grandma and Grandpa too.

grinchingit · 20/12/2022 19:49

Minniem2020 · 20/12/2022 19:46

Yep, we have this with Nana, plenty of Nannas though.

Yes, my own grandparent was 'Nana' and that was difficult. I was clearly wrong to think everyone with a Gran had it easier than me Grin

But you can get a card made very inexpensively with any name you like from Moonpig and you don’t even have to leave your chair. They send the card to you for you to write in and post on, if you don’t want it to be sent directly. Why would anyone bother buying a supermarket card and doctoring it?

Colourinsidethelines · 20/12/2022 19:50

I wanted a Nana card. Our card factory had none, plenty of Nanny, but no Nana. Had to go to Clintons. They usually have all the name options you need but far more expensive!

burnoutbabe · 20/12/2022 19:50

The sane sec range is very limited.

You get one option of each option

So sister and sister in law
2 my 2 mums (no option of variation in num versions)
Not yet seen to my 2 grans yet!

Purplechicken207 · 20/12/2022 19:52

We have granny (well, several) and grandma. Genuinely never knew of anyone I know having a 'gran'. Lots of people I grew up with had 'nan'

Athenen0ctua · 20/12/2022 19:53

I usually just do blank cards. It's not worth hunting for the right spelling when you might not even like the actual design if you do find one. What did annoy me was how hard it was to find a nice bright and cheerful 80 card that didn't look like it was for an old person (great aunt who looks and acts 70).

secretllama · 20/12/2022 19:54

Where is everyone finding Granny cards in Scotland? Can rarely find them in shops and that's what our kids call our parents/we call our own granny's. Usually end up buying online! Agree with OPs that say they don't buy ones with the wrong name as it just seems odd if you don't call them that.

LovelyRachel · 20/12/2022 19:55

Asda is full of cards for "Nanna" and Sainsburys is full of cards for "Grandmother" and "Grandma"

I can't find a Granny or a Gran anywhere. Not even a Nanny.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 20/12/2022 19:56

Try an independent card shop. Ours has cards for every conceivable familial connection - I was marvelling at them when I went in to get a card for DH.

'Grandson and his girlfriend'
'Mum and her husband'
'Mum and her wife'
'Parents and their dog'
'Cousin and her boyfriend'
'A very special cat'

etc.

Bigheartsshapelittleminds · 20/12/2022 19:57

I always struggle to get mum and step-dad/dad and step mum. They have loads that say just mum or just dad, or mum and dad. Surely nowadays it's very common to have parents who are separated and have new partners.

Clingfilm · 20/12/2022 19:57

Shout out to all the Welsh/Irish/Scottish and northerners who change the U to an A on the mum cards with a pen. It's mam round these parts, the card shops are finally catching up.
