Cut back heating mildew Risk

justasking111 · 18/12/2022 13:46

Twice I've lost all my leather shoes handbags due to mildew. Once when we moved to a doer upper, once when we moved to a rental between House.

Fast forward to today. We have an under bed storage area lift up. I lifted it up, there was that smell of damp. He won't have heating in bedroom. Otherwise heating comes on 7-10 4-9 in hall bathroom and kitchen. Lounge log burner. We both received £250 each as pensioners aibu to ask for bedroom radiator on . I can't bear to lose a third lot of footwear and bags

Why no heating in the bedroom? That’s so weird if you are heating the rest of the house?

bit I’d store them somewhere else and give them a good clean, google will help you with what to use

CrochetIsCool · 18/12/2022 14:00

Defunitely yes to the radiator going on in your bedroom. We use bowls of salt to absorb any moisture in our static caravan for the 4 months the site is closed over winter and have found this works well. Margarine tubs with a good inch of salt in each. Maybe try this is your under bed storage where air can't really circulate easily, but check it every week or so.

validnumber · 18/12/2022 14:02

Can't you clean them up and keep them?
If not then buy plastic boxes with lids to store them and put mini dehumidifier/ salt in with them ?

BUT why should I. Gave him the £250 towards the energy which is around £120 a month in the winter. I just want one bloody radiator on. He's gone bonkers. I was tidying the sitting room this morning, he turned the light off leaving me in a dim twilight. I'm cold, fed up and now my stuff is at risk again.

Our joint income is 70k a year. I swear the media are responsible for this. Apart from the log burner the rest of the house is 13 -14c

Yanbu!! Turn the heating on!

Crackof · 18/12/2022 14:46

Mould is more about damp and air circulation than temperature. Warming a damp house up without showing air to circulate could just make the mould worse.

Crackof · 18/12/2022 14:47

*allowing

fancyacuppatea · 18/12/2022 14:52

Move stuff you care about to the living room near the log burner.

If he still gets pissy, just turn all the heating on full blast while he's asleep.

FanniesFlaps · 18/12/2022 14:55

He is financially abusing you @justasking111.

I can't it's a new thermostat. The old one I could advance. I've read the instructions manual but still don't understand it. It's all wireless. He'd feel the warm radiators anyway.

He's got octopus on an app. Everything shows up the next day. A spike for a shower, oven, washing machine etc. It's like his Bloody fit bit. How many steps, heart rate, bp. 😭

turn the light back on ffs

are you living with the modern day Scrooge?

Knickerthief1 · 18/12/2022 15:20

The house needs to be at 18 degrees to avoid problems. He sounds like my dad who has plenty of money but has become obsessive about heating. You need to put your foot down about it but it sounds like you're a bit afraid of him?

All his old fart mates are the same, obsessed with it this winter. It's the new covid obsession . We've been young and skint, it's like de ja vu.

We're home for Christmas and I refuse to freeze when we don't need to. I'm readying myself for battle but my dad is stubborn and obsessive at the best of times!!

justasking111 · 18/12/2022 15:31

We've mildew on bathroom ceiling. I go in put on light fan, shower, open window and leave light fan untill cleared. He uses won't turn light on, won't open window coz heating is on and moans about the mildew. Oh and the radiator is a towel one so we should share a towel. He's such a wet bugger the towel he uses stays damp. So no thanks I'll use my own towel

That's not good @justasking111 I wouldn't say it's abuse but weirdly men do seem to become increasingly obsessed with stuff as they age... we have terrible issues with mould and condensation but it's really improving since we got a dehumidifier and as they run constantly he won't see a spike. If your shoes are smelling mouldy try putting them in a warm dry place with a teabag in each shoe. Works really well to get rid of the smell.

justasking111 · 18/12/2022 15:33

Well I've left the bed understore open and put the radiator on. I'm damned if I'm going to lose much loved shoes and bags

He is not the boss of you. Don't ever ask permission, just stick the heating on when and where you like. Fucking King of the House Syndrome.

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2022 15:34

Why would you put up with this? I literally don’t get it.

Down load the heating app or get someone to do it for you.You can then control the heating as you wish.It is easy mine is on the IPad.Take no notice of him and tell him you will not be cold and will do what you want.If he still goes on about it go on strike stop cooking for him.Good luck. You are on a good income and not young why should you be cold and have mouldy items? Silly old fool.Him not you!

Google it?

Ragruggers · 18/12/2022 15:43

Can you contact the plumber who fitted the system to put the app on for you.

You're not helpless - you have internet access, so just google it and sort it out yourself. You don't need his permission.

It's not an app just a thermostat. Plumber set it up for us back in November. OH retired engineer took days to figure it out from the instructions manual. There's no advance just up to six time zones to programme.
