Aargh - Memory Foam Pillows!

TheShellBeach · 18/12/2022 12:57

DH and I bought two memory foam pillows and they took a month to get here because of the postal strikes. Amazon had actually refunded us their cost because they were so late.

By the time they arrived we were full of anticipation. I like a firm pillow and these were definitely billed as "firm".

But they are so uncomfortable. I am surprised that anyone can sleep on them TBH. My neck, back and head hurt after just one night. I do not understand why they're so popular.

AIBU to give them to the charity shop?

I don't get on with them either. They're not firm, they're soft with a lot of give (IMO). I wasted about £30 on one years ago which is money I could really do with. Thing is with pillows there's no way of knowing until you try them. I'd try them for more than one night but if it carries on being bad maybe see if you have any friends who would appreciate them.
People usually hate the kind of pillows I like (pretty much hard but flat as well, probably half the depth of a normal pillow). I hate soft ones where your face sinks in.

Reindeersnooker · 18/12/2022 18:30

They have no support at all. Useless.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 18/12/2022 18:31

hate the pillows and I have a memory foam mattress now and I also hate that. Constantly have a bad back off it.

postcardpuffin · 18/12/2022 18:39

In my experience (I have neck problems) they take awhile to adjust to before they become comfy, and then they really are comfy!

Nat6999 · 18/12/2022 18:40

Try the silentnight ones, they are a memory foam outer with normal filling inner, you can shake them up like a normal pillow.

Robostripes · 18/12/2022 18:43

Yes you need a few nights to get used to it. We have Tempur ones, they weigh a ton and seem rock hard at first. Once you’re used to it they’re amazing! So much so that DH can’t sleep with a normal pillow now, we have to take the Tempur one with us on holiday.

MadCatandBirdLady · 18/12/2022 18:45

Try and persevere. I used to have permanent neck pain but not any more ( only sometimes ) and mine is only a cheap supermarket brand one

Inmyonesie · 18/12/2022 18:58

I use the ikea ones, they are perfect! Soft, supportive and so comfy. I take mine on holiday with me! I have tried others and they arent as good, is a bit of trial and error.

Don't try the mattress....vvvv hot...don't get the memory foam love

PurplePastaBake · 18/12/2022 19:06

Try the Premier Inn ones, they’re brilliant. Best pillows I’ve ever bought.

justcallmebozo · 18/12/2022 21:08

I was referred to physi a few years ago for chronic neck pain. He told me to avoid them. Said they were at best useless, and at worst they would cause more problems than i already had.

Lapland123 · 18/12/2022 21:11

Life’s biggest disappointment, the memory foam pillow

i use it to prop myself up in bed for reading, but couldn’t possibly sleep on it

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/12/2022 21:13

We had two fre when we bought a Tempus mattress, Dh loves his but I was the same as you OP.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/12/2022 21:13

** so many typos 🙄

Wakk · 18/12/2022 21:53

My physio recommended the tempur one. Was like sleeping with my neck on a log the first couple of days but then it got better and I love it.

TheShellBeach · 19/12/2022 09:53

Well, after Night Two on the hardest pillow in the world, I actually slept all night for once and have not woken up with a headache.

For the moment, I shall allow the pillow to stay...............

Two further nights of terrible sleeping. Is it the pillow?

You don't have to use it,it's not the law 😉

Beanbagtrap · 23/12/2022 07:23

Not all memory foam pillows are the same. I bought one from Dunelm which was awful, too bulky and firm but my tempur cloud pillow is like, well, a cloud.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 23/12/2022 07:27

Mine has been life-changing - and I was deeply sceptical, as I hate memory foam mattresses. My neck pain is so much better. Maybe yours is just too hard?

Roselilly36 · 23/12/2022 07:30

I have neck trouble, I have a memory foam neck care pillow, it really helps my neck, I take it away with me, as a normal pillow gives me pain.

Abhannmor · 23/12/2022 07:32

I got one and basically use it as a seat cushion now. Or to prop up my real pillows.

Apparently it only works if you are a side sleeper. But how are you supposed to know whether you are?
I really want a firm mattress too. And I'm.fed up with springs and having to turn the bloody thing. Are memory foam mattresses as crap as the pillows?

TheMoth · 23/12/2022 07:55

It's taken me 40 something years to realise that I don't actually want to sleep on 2 pillows and that a soft pillow works better for me.

Also only found out when we bought our new bed, that a hard mattress is not actually good for me, as I thought, but a softer one. I used to wake in the night every time I rolled over (side sleeper). Not any more!
