I’ll go first.

I can’t help but think making someone’s rent payments eligible to prove you can pay a mortgage would go a long way to housing security for so many people. And limiting the amount of properties owned by one landlord / amount a landlord can charge in rent, would also go a long way. I can’t help but think profiteering massively off of a basic need and right such as housing is really not ok.

Im sure there’s a reason why my idea wouldn’t work, feel free to put me right 😂

What’s your idea?

If there was 100% inheritance tax, people would be spending like mad before they died.

Simonjt · 17/12/2022 20:17

Vimto1 · 17/12/2022 20:15

🙄

I'll say it again, a 100% inheritance tax would be able to fund a better welfare and social care where robust support, accommodation and education could be provided to ALL children in the case of a parental death, regardless of whether they were lucky enough to be born to a set of parents that had savings or not.

Why do you want bereaved children to be made homeless?

DdraigGoch · 17/12/2022 20:17

DrLecter · 17/12/2022 20:07

Comedycook do you honestly not get that this also happens to people who don't receive inheritances?! They have NO safety net of any kind!

It's not a race to the bottom.

If you think that the super wealthy would pay such a high inheritance tax, you're deluded. They already make a big effort to avoid a 40% inheritance tax.

A stressed population, be it human or rats etc starts to I’ll treat its young, self harm, fight etc. People without hope have no investment in society and are more likely to commit crimes.
If we don’t spend money on welfare then we’ll end up having to pay for a larger and larger justice system, prisons etc etc. plus a more stressed population

whereaw · 17/12/2022 20:18

@Vimto1 oh great idea. No point in working then. I'm quite pleased really as I currently do about 70 hours a week with two little kids to look after too. Will the system take care of us now? Where do I sign up?

Or just leave. Lots of these ideas sound nice but you can’t make people stay so they’d just take it with them

Sounds like there is no point in saving unless I can become a multi multi millionaire. I might as well spend everything then take advantage of all the free stuff you're proposing spending everyone else's money on.

I know you think that taking other people's money makes you lovely, but I take the opposite view.

Jaxhog · 17/12/2022 20:19

I wish there was a compulsory dose of personal responsibility given to everyone. Too many people blame everyone but themselves.

Ragruggers · 17/12/2022 20:20

Charge drunks who call ambulances and get taken to hospital because they can’t control how much they drink, also those who DNA medical appointments without a good reason. It is hard enough getting an appt for those who would attend.

Vimto1 · 17/12/2022 20:20

NameChangeLifeChange · 17/12/2022 20:14

Of course not but surely most people work hard to provide for their family. If I knew all of that would be taken by the government I wouldn’t consider living in the UK. We are fortunate to own a house but also it’s due to hard work, sacrifice and prioritising creating a safe environment for my children.

Of course the large majority of people work hard to provide for their kids and it sounds like you've done a great job.

But there's luck there right? People who don't get cancer or have a disability or who can work full time or have parental support with childcare are all in a better position to be able to save and leave money to their kids. Why should kids of people who aren't so lucky have a worst start?

If there was 100% inheritance tax, people would be spending like mad before they died.

It would also mean fewer people would self fund care when they’re older.

I’d like smaller more local schools. One class for each year with a maximum of 25 children at primary, 2 classes at secondary so 50 kids per year. Special schools up to 18 local too with specialist teachers moving rather than disabled children spending hours in taxis. Home education drop in centres with trained teachers and rooms/resources to help parents home educate if they want to.

WrongLife · 17/12/2022 20:21

Unless you can incentivise people to WANT to better themselves and to earn money to pay taxes to support a significant welfare state, they won't bother. I wouldn't bother to try and buy a house if I could have secure rented accommodation subsidised by the state.

100% inheritance tax would ensure that many people just wouldn't bother to start that business, or develop that idea, or do night classes to get a job that paid more. They would take the support and be happy, but pay less in tax.

Close the tax loop holes.

This. This. This. THIS. It's an absolute fucking disgrace how much money is lost through this.

What people don't seem to realize, is that if you have 100% inheritance tax, you'd NEED more money to pay for all the extra dependents. The only people who get rich would be the extra civil servants we'd need to make it happen.

dropthevipers · 17/12/2022 20:22

This is never going to happen, but.....once a week on Saturday night a national lottery type tv show spins a fucking massive wheel. On this wheel is listed every single crime on the statute book. Where ever the wheel stops then everyone convicted of that crime for the next six months is subject to the death penalty. Here's the kicker, this penalty applies retrospectively to the previous six months too. So that petty shoplifting you might be contemplating?- maybe not-it could be on the TV show in 4 months time. It's a winner I tell you.

Ten teachers per secondary school wouldn’t work as it wouldn’t have enough wealth to employ specialist teachers, so either subjects would be extremely limited, or children who receive an inferior education due to not having sucject specialists.

I read that fixing/aftercare of cosmetic/gastric surgery done abroad is a problem right now.
Relatively high rates of complications, particularly with gastric surgery.
Perhaps anyone choosing to go abroad for surgery should have to pay an NHS insurance to pay for any care back in this country.

Speedweed · 17/12/2022 20:23

Impose a residence qualification in order to buy UK property to stop whole housing developments being sold to overseas investors - we're one of a very few countries which doesn't have this.

Crack down on landlords - if you own two or more rental properties you should be forced to hold them in some sort of property company, which would be properly taxed, registered, regulated, insured etc. Essentially to dissuade crappy landlords.

A form of long term tenancy should be created, 10 years or so, so renters have the option of more stability.

There should be a reverse 'right to buy' scheme, where you could sell your property back to councils and remain in it, rather than doing equity release.

Empty properties (and maybe second homes) should be taxed to high heaven, to make it prohibitive for them to be empty more than a couple of months a year.

It wouldn’t work. No one incentivised to do much, who would pay the taxes

I wouldn’t do life skills in schools but economics earlier

When people propose huge penalties for crimes, they forget that Parliament can make anything a crime at the flick of a pen.

If you complain at a trans person being in a women's toilet or refuge. Crime
Remember when "emergency powers" were used to criminalise going outside and women were being arrested in parks or bundled into cars and killed?

Just be careful. You might be happy with the laws now. But they can soon change. Then who is going to protest those laws if they could be put to death for it?

Regular (weekly or twice weekly) cooking classes for both sexes throughout childhood/adolescence. Including shopping, efficient meal planning and nutrition.

In my time at school I made a few crumbles etc, a pizza and an apple pie. I was lucky my mom was a good cook. I think a proper, hands on education about food and cooking would combat food waste, food poverty and obesity.
