I’ll go first.

I can’t help but think making someone’s rent payments eligible to prove you can pay a mortgage would go a long way to housing security for so many people. And limiting the amount of properties owned by one landlord / amount a landlord can charge in rent, would also go a long way. I can’t help but think profiteering massively off of a basic need and right such as housing is really not ok.

Im sure there’s a reason why my idea wouldn’t work, feel free to put me right 😂

What’s your idea?

Make council tax the same throughout the country. And band based on last sold price. It's a joke at present

That would push me from Band B to Band F. I can't afford that.

NEmama · 18/12/2022 17:59

@woodhill yes probably cheaper but still band f that's two full months of my salary. (Luckily we both work).

NEmama · 18/12/2022 18:00

@XenoBitch I mean make the bands the same throughout the country so band f is the same price for example

Yes that's a lot. Is that Newcastle?

Is it because it is more populated in the SE so more revenue for boroughs

NEmama · 18/12/2022 18:05

@woodhill no Middlesbrough so not even a city

NEmama · 18/12/2022 18:06

Poorer councils seem to charge more it's mad

FluffyYucca · 18/12/2022 18:15

Redo the bands for council tax based on average prices for the area. So an average price house would be band D and then work out the other bands from that.

Banding property based on the price it last sold at would push me to Band F though. I would not be able to afford that, even if it was the same nationwide.

What about people who travel for work? Are you going to fit trackers to their briefcases and bill them accordingly.

If you want to level up the North, you would be better off upgrading the infrastructure. Eastern Leg and Golborne Link of HS2 need completing, NPR needs to be built in full, existing lines need electrifying.

I'm sorry DdraigGoch, my suggestion was that we tax based on where people live in order to help fund projects like the ones you suggest! I appreciate your suggestions that you have repeatedly mentioned around transport that I have previously raised in my comments.

I don't think putting trackers on people makes much sense as long as they have a primary residence, right?

I'm going to have to unsubscribe from this thread as I feel you have been quite rude to several posters in the community today in order to rile someone up. Quite honestly, I don't feel comfortable talking to you.

I've said my piece so please leave me alone in future if we cross paths. Please learn to be less curt and understand that this is a respectful discussion you're conducting yourself quite poorly in a public space which brings not only a detriment to yourself but the entire mumsnet community, which is and always has been lovely.

Shame on you.

@XenoBitch terraced house on my road paid the same price and we did two years after them they have a garden big enough for a building plot and pay band A we pay band F. It's wrong. They need to make if fair for everyone

thinkponk48 · 18/12/2022 18:23

The problem with the rent idea, this would lead to more 100% mortgages and this would cause house prices to soar again.

On paper it seems great but in real life it would cause as many problems as it solved

All that will happen will be that people who have lived in their homes for decades will see a drop in their council tax, and people who have moved into them in the last decade or so will see a huge increase.

NEmama · 18/12/2022 18:31

wandsworth, which saw average sale prices of property hit £956,541 in 2020, residents only pay £845 per year for council tax.

We paid £250,000 for our house and pay over £3000 council tax.

It's so unfair. Wages are lower up here too

Agreed, people need to take more personal responsibility, that includes working full time. Only full time workers should be eligible for benefits.

I agree with the need for more responsible choices. What is described as 'good' versus 'bad' luck is sometimes 'responsible' versus 'irresponsible' choices and their consequences.

Proportional representation. National building company - to build well-planned affordable homes. Labour’s national green energy company.

Reverse the centralisation of everything into London and a few other big cities. Regenerate the regions so that local people can live and work there rather than be forced to take jobs in London/South East just because that's where most of the decent jobs are located. Far too many Uni graduates never return to live/work in their home towns because there are no decent jobs for them - they end up having to relocate to London/South East for the graduate level jobs. That leaves a vacuum behind, which causes loss of amenities, influx of second home owners and holiday homes, which pushes up house prices further and creates a spiral so that those remaining working in the regions can't afford housing!

Bring back nursing bursaries. Possibly grants for stem degrees.

A huge number of nurses receive job offers from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand right before they graduate. It’s not financially viable to pay for their training, when they emigrate after they have qualified.

Yep, well done on your decision not to get cancer and therefore be able to work 'harder'. Your kids should definitely get an easier life and a leg up on the kids of those feckless people who got cancer and were too ill to get savings together.

No but they should reap they rewards of my hard work, not the kids of the woman round the corner who had never worked a day in her life, pops w new kid out every year and puts all her benefits up her nose or in her lips. What incentive is there to do well in life if it will all be stolen from you?

woodhill · 18/12/2022 19:02

My dd is in NHS and I'm sure she had to work for them for a certain time after having free tuition

She also worked hard on the wards for free whilst a student

Not everyone can afford life insurance. And what about those born with a disability? Very few policies (if any) cover pre-existing conditions.

That used to be the case, but it really isn’t anymore and hasn’t been for quite sometime. We both have life insurance (without paying a fortune), I’m a type 1 diabetic without a spleen and my husband has a fairly significant physical disability.

Shol · 18/12/2022 19:08

No politician may be appointed to be Prime Minister or a member of Cabinet unless they have previously served at least two years in a managerial role and also have passed an exam in basic money management. And never been fired from a previous job for dishonesty.

Violent porn made illegal: only caring and respectful sex may be displayed on screen. (Am fed up of teenage boys being brainwashed into thinking violence against women is sexy and normal then growing up to assault women and everyone is so surprised 🙄)

Windfall tax on energy companies.

Extremely high tax on second home ownership including buy to let properties.

Extremely high tax on banker bonuses.

Clamp down on ‘legal tax avoidance’.

Social media and smartphones to be age 18+ only, with fines for companies that allow children to dodge age verification.

Single sex jails. No exceptions.

Scrap gender recognition certificates and limit NHS-funded treatments to those with actual biological problems.

Rejoin the EU and repair relationships with our closest allies.

Increase investment in quality childcare, schools, and teacher retention, in particular reducing paperwork, increasing teacher automomy and having a maximum class size of twenty.

Death penalty for rapists and child abusers.

Inkyblue123 · 18/12/2022 19:09

A radical overhaul of the NHS
Energy security
Climate tax on imports from Counties such as China
Affordable childcare
a green card/ lottery immigration system for non skilled immigrants
a law that ensure that local councils can’t enforce schemes residents don’t want ie LTNs

I'm glad you found affordable cover but that's just not the reality for many.

My DP was refused cover by 2 providers and offered cover by a third but with astronomical monthly payments due to a neurological issue he was born with

I don't know why people are so against recognising that luck plays a role in what we achieve in life. Being ill or having a minimum waged job doesn't equal bad decision making, and even if it did, why should innocent kids suffer for that?
