What’s life like?

Like the UK in 1970 according to my English husband ☺️ good salaries, kids walking to school alone, trains run on time and we can drive to Italy/France/Germany/Austria in a couple of hours (and skiing within an hour). Downsides: the language mostly and far fewer activities for the children as it is pretty much expected that the grandparents are within walking distance to look after the children. Childcare is very expensive.

@Drknittingfrog Is there a large Ex pat/English speaking community there?
What do you do for work, is the pay loads better.
Curious about living in Switzerland too, have been to Zurich twice and Lucerne (sp?)

It's great! very clean, very pretty, very well organised. Pay is very high - minimum wage in Geneva is about :20 an hour - but so is the cost of living. Loads of expats in the bigger cities. Parts of the country are less, shall we say, enlightened - one canton only gave women the vote in 1991 😮 and there are issues with racism, like most countries.

twenty quid an hour that should say

Impossible to buy unless you know someone....(my dad best friend lives there)

It’s amazing, very high quality of life, big expat community. Stunning nature.
Very, very expensive - do not be fooled by the amazing high salaries. When we moved back to the UK both of our pay went down but we had more disposable income.
Slightly 1950s attitude to women working and gender roles in general.

Do you live in Switzerland? I have questions… www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4598407-do-you-live-in-switzerland-i-have-questions

I contributed to this thread as used to live there. Lots of info and good summary I think!!

Because we have no family here and we have school age children (who either go only morning or finish at 3pm)... No I don't work anymore but before that I was a product manager for a plant extract company on 90,000chf /year. That's about 70'000 GBP. Hubby is on a bit over 110,000 CHF. We bought our house 8 years ago in a smallish town. Foreigners are actually over 20% of the population so you'll find expats in all the big towns. Good is honestly that expensive (apart from meat and fish) but the choice is a bit limited compared to the UK. There is no pub culture etc so life is a lot less boozy (and people don't dress up much) so if you're into going out it's not as exciting as London 🤷🏼‍♀️
