To think I just witnessed a glitch in the matrix.

We had to go to 2 different shops for 2 different things. My child was being practically catatonic, which happens sometimes, so went about implementing therapy exercises to help.

This involves holding something manageable, taking it to the till, handing it over, giving the money, saying/signing yes and thank you for the receipt, and often requires extensive help and support. Point is, my child was looking very special.

When handing over the money both times my child said " The change will be X " and both times the 2 different cashiers in the 2 different shops replied with the exact same thing in the exact same tone " It is? It is! Well done mate. Aren't you good with numbers, you should be doing my job!" And my child responded the exact same way both times with a half smile while staring off into the middle distance.

I can't get across how identical the response sounded

I'm a little freaked out ngl.

Cool

Someone told me many years ago that there are only 300 people in the world. All the others we see are extras. They disappear when we move off that set. I’m fine with that! Overpopulation would be a real problem otherwise.

Next time on a "Omg you can't have 4 babies you'll kill the world thread" I'm gonna quote this.

"well done mate" - are you in an area where mate is used a lot?

Both using the word mate... that seems the glitch. The AI should have come up with a variation... one should have said "Well done. You are good with numbers."
Matrix support will pick this up and address it in the next AI update.

While mate is not uncommon darling and sweetie is far more common

If they were south asian cashiers, then making kids count out the change in their heads tends to be one of the ways we train our kids in mental arithmetic. Otherwise I can’t explain it

Both British from what I could gather

This made me laugh but it is COMPLETELY true!

OMG. How have I never realised this?

Does it work on husbands?

Sounds to me more like it's your kid! They're hypnotizing them 😣 definitely. The smile into the distance was about getting them to say the same thing not the change. 🙂 You're welcome.

He's not a supernatural thing I swear

Your child is gifted? Is their name Neo?

Ngl that was one of the finalists names (as a nick name though)

@Cassillero York is beautiful and I can confirm it is very real as I live close to it. Wish I lived IN it!

I'm there next week. We go often.
I can see how it can feel like a film set though. Especially the Shambles.

Hadjab · 15/12/2022 05:11

Wait, what?? My next door neighbour goes to Lidl every morning to get bread and other bits, and I see him with his shopping as he goes past my window.

Or do I 🤔

Twiglets1 · 15/12/2022 05:59

If you’ve ever worked as a Teaching Assistant you will know that we say things like “you’re very good with numbers!” with enthusiasm every time one of our students gets 2+2 =4 correct.
I think the cashiers response was exactly the sort of thing someone working at a till would say to a young person they perceived as “looking very special” (your words).

Tinselpipes · 14/12/2022 22:34

A lot of people we encounter day to day aren't actually real, so it doesn't surprise me. That's why you never see your neighbours bringing shopping home.

In the 15 years we’ve lived here, I can’t think of a single occasion when I saw my neighbours unload their cars or carry in shopping. 😯
Maybe our memories trash boring information like this?
On the other hand, I always feel like the entire street is out and watching when we struggle in with our badly packed shopping bags. 😳

squishee · 15/12/2022 06:45

looking very special - shot in the dark OP, are you thinking in French and thus by "special" you actually mean something like "odd"?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 15/12/2022 06:51

DC must have been stealthily studying matrix addition and subtraction on Khan Academy.

This is absolutely true, I’ve believed it for years. Can’t convince DH though.

That's exactly where we were when I started questioning it's authenticity 🤣

Do you ever get that feeling that you're not really here? A bit like a waking dream? I was having one of those moments and that's when I realised York's definitely a set. I've been going there regularly for almost 40 years so granted, this pretence has been going on for some time. And it's a very well made movie set. With lots of other countries in on the scam.

CoffeeBoy · 15/12/2022 07:13

Birds aren’t real either, they’re all little bird bots.

PleaseTakeItOff · 15/12/2022 07:24

Cassillero · 14/12/2022 22:32

Did they both say "mate" as well? Hardly anyone says that. It IS weird, I agree!

That entirely depends on where you live. It’s a bog standard thing to say round here.

Have you been there on a late weekend night in the summer? Different kind of set with the hens/stags etc 😂

BertieBotts · 15/12/2022 07:27

My guess is both the cashiers were male, it sounds like a very man-to-boy kind of response, trying to be kind, OTT praise in the understanding that a child will take it at face value rather than feel patronised. Maybe a little genuine surprise that a child who otherwise appears to need a lot of help is good with numbers.

Standard retail response, in other words. I don't think it would be standard for every child or every cashier, but there are enough specifics that are the same between both interactions that I don't think it's that unusual you would get exactly the same response. When working in retail you do tend to go onto autopilot churning out phrases rather than making a unique response to every customer. I know people always complain about retail customers making the same jokes, but I never found that particularly annoying, because I would have about 2-3 stock responses that would just come out in response and appear friendly. I can "hear" the sing-song impressed tone as well Grin

Might be region dependent but it's extremely common to call a male child "mate" where I'm from, that doesn't strike me as unusual at all! Most common from men to boys, but could also be from a woman to a boy. Dude would be the other stranger-pet-name but less common than mate. (Midlands) Women might use love, darling, duck etc but men only towards women/girls.

I've seen that in the early afternoon to be honest. York seems to attract lightweights who are staggering around off their head by lunchtime. Even starting at 10am when spoons opens I can't understand how you can get in that state in 2 hours?

Iamnotausername · 15/12/2022 07:47

Yesterday I had to have a conversation via a translation app with my Italian neighbour who took my bin. But then again last week I did see the same neighbour get into their car 3 times in a row without getting out again... so...

When I was working in Hull I remember a lot of lost shoes. Does this still happen, Hull folks?

Iamnotausername · 15/12/2022 07:52

The above link is a link to a Hull newspaper about someone who can "prove" the simulation is real. Not sure about that but there were definately a weird amount of lost shoes including shoes hanging from telephone wires.
