To think sharing bank details ...a bit dodgy ?

pinksanga · 14/12/2022 19:45

Just been on TUI website trying to book a holiday.
We selected the no deposit /pay direct debit
(Which we do every year )
This time TUI asked me to share bank info.
I had to sign in to my online banking etc
For whatever reason it didn't work as there were technical issues

Aibu to think there's no need for tui to see my bank account /balances /transactions etc ?
Any other time I've just put my bank details in

It said direct debit powered by trusty

YABU

they don’t see your bank account or transactions.

How some people function in a modern world with such a poor grasp on basic technology!

pinksanga · 14/12/2022 19:50

What's the point in it ?

They're providing the service, they get to make the rules.

PacificallyRequested · 14/12/2022 19:53

They can't see your balance or transactions! It's really no different to putting debit/credit card details in. Just a payment method.

LipsSoScarlet · 14/12/2022 19:54

They can’t see any of your bank details. You log in to your account for your bank to verify that it’s you making the payment. It’s an extra layer of security to just entering your card details.

Crunchymum · 14/12/2022 19:54

You have to share your account number and sort code to set up a DD.

I assume as its a new DD you needed to sign into your online banking to confirm set up of DD from your account.

Tui wouldn't see your bank details. Your bank were asking you to confirm you wanted to set up the payment.

Byfleet · 14/12/2022 19:56

How would Tui be able to see your bank transactions?

OP have you never paid for anything by bank transfer? It is really common, I think I have done it twice today. You give your account number and sort code so money can be transferred, but that’s all. It doesn’t give the person access to your account.

pinksanga · 14/12/2022 20:00

This wasn't that.
I wasn't confirming a payment by logging into my bank.
This was setting up a direct debit
On the tui page it said direct debit
I clicked and it took me to a site called trustly

Yes, it’s how some business verify and set up the direct debit.

Why on earth do you think they will see your transactions?

SeasonFinale · 14/12/2022 20:02

If you want to pay by direct debit you have to provide bank details - unfortunately they can't just guess 🤦‍♀️

pinksanga · 14/12/2022 20:05

Why do they need to see my balance ?

TUI don’t see your balance, or your transactions, which was the opening of this post.

How old are you OP? Many banks offer basic lessons to older customers on how banking and transactions work online these days

It is in the T&Cs, there is a massive difference between sharing your sort code and account number than following a link and logging into your bank.

CallMeDaphne · 14/12/2022 20:11

They will collect the balance, (i.e what you owe them).

No-one will be able to see your balance.

TUI do not see the balance, Trusty collect this data,

there is a difference,

I don't need to know how old you are to know you are a patronising ageist A hole.

Clearly the OP is struggling with a very basic daily task for many, banks offer these lessons to help people like the OP.

was merely trying to be helpful, as it will help in future not to be concerned about stuff like this.

And you'd be calling a person a twat if they followed a link and added their banking details. No one needs to collect that data.

pinksanga · 14/12/2022 20:14

I have many d/d set up
None I've had to login via a link etc
It makes me nervous

I’ve used Trustly loads. No problem whatsoever
