To have covid and see family at Christmas

namechange2000000 · 13/12/2022 22:22

I'm 99% I'm going to test positive for Covid tomorrow, I'm convincing myself I can already see an extremely faint line on an LFT. AIBU to still see family over Xmas? All jabbed to a certain extent, no clinically vulnerable. No one is made to isolate anymore are they? Last Christmas my Mum had it so Christmas was miserable and lonely and we had so much planned for this Christmas Sad

Here you go

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/when-to-self-isolate-and-what-to-do/

isolate for 5 days minimum so you should be clear for Christmas

not to do so is selfish, not only to your family but others. Would you go if you had flu? Most wouldn’t as they wouldn’t want to share it

personally if I knew you had covid I wouldn’t be there. Had it once, even though jabbed, never want it again

As someone that got covid off a selfish family member last year. Don’t be that person. Stay at home and isolate . I got long covid thanks to mine and I’m still very ill a year on.

Stay at home and isolate

Most of us have jobs to hold on to🙄🙄

Most would be far too ill to go anywhere if they had flu.

ilovesooty · 13/12/2022 23:02

Only you know how your family are likely to feel about it but if you do test positive tomorrow you should be negative by Christmas as others have said.

I wouldn't knowingly mix socially with others if I were testing positive and wouldn't want anyone who knew they were positive near me, but as people said your family circumstances and decisions aren't something we can know.

namechange2000000 · 13/12/2022 23:02

I work for the NHS patient facing so I would have to not go to work anyway as per their policy (unpaid, annoyingly)!

Don’t test then. Also Christmas is 12 days away

That's different from choices about mixing socially.

Yes it is but still, a lot of Mumsnetters (like the one I quoted) seem to think we can all stay at home and isolate.

If I had Covid, I wouldn't socialise but I certainly couldn't stay home/isolate and I work with the public.

Might not catch!

just the nits they need to worry about then😂

Imapartylass · 13/12/2022 23:21

Well I’ll not be going to my work, even though I won’t get paid. I can’t even get out my bed at the moment never mind go and work in a physical busy warehouse. Still annoying knowing you have caught it from someone you work with who has been coughing and spluttering next to you.

namechange2000000 · 13/12/2022 23:22

@Imapartylass I wish you a speedy recovery x

you’d need to stay home if you felt so awful with it.

Yes but that's the same as absolutely any illness you felt so awful with.

But the majority of people who have Covid need to go into work if they are well enough to do so. They simply can't afford to stay home and isolate no matter how much some people would like them to.

You certainly would. I'm self employed and fortunate to be able to decide for myself but I do feel for those whose employers say that they have to come in if they feel able to and those who know that covid absences will form part of sickness procedures - also those who won't get paid if they have to stay off.

I still think that's different to mixing with others socially by choice.

Mariposista · 13/12/2022 23:53

Stop testing (unless you job forces you to)

i was implying go to work if your perfectly fine. Why would you stay off of you weren’t? The only reason I’m staying off mines is because I can’t get out my bed as I’m unwell.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/12/2022 00:13

Hbh17 · 13/12/2022 22:29

Why are you even bothering to test?? Most people definitely wouldn't. It doesn't matter whether or not you have Covid, as it's not a big deal. Just crack on with whatever you have planned.

Well seeing as people are still being hospitalised with it then it is certainly a big deal for some.

TurquoiseBeach · 14/12/2022 00:34

Hope you haven't got it. You should hopefully be clear before Christmas if you have got it. I'd test your household to make sure they were clear too before visiting. It's up to your family that you're visiting, but that's assuming they're not the sort to lump covid in with a cold and are aware of the longer term issues.

Your point being? Most of us can work from home or have an employer that makes us isolate.

Hallswithhollylalala · 14/12/2022 18:59

Remember you can still get the isolation grant. I’m in Scotland.if on low wages or certain benefits. You have to send for a pcr test first. But because of the postal strikes you might be positive the time it comes lol 😂

ifonly4 · 14/12/2022 19:40

I know I'd make the decision not to see others, just purely from the point of view both DH and myself were really ill, and I wouldn't want to pass it onto others and them feel the same. Also, them to pass it onto elderly relatives etc.

If you do test positive, then you should just about be ok over xmas period (I say that my tests were very clear until day 12), but you're obviously going to do the right thing and discuss with whoever.

Hope you're ok.

Roughly 30% of the UK workforce can work from home. That's hardly 'most of us' is it?

Tundrawave · 14/12/2022 19:53

Christmas is over 10 days away, of course you should go!

Cosycover · 14/12/2022 19:53

I only tested positive for 7 days when I had it a few months ago. I reckon you'll be fine for Christmas.

Ladysodor · 14/12/2022 19:53

Don’t bother testing. See how you feel nearer the time. Regardless of covid if you’re not well then you won’t feel like joining in anyway.
