What is the actual point of them anymore? I sent a small parcel 1st class 2 weeks ago and it's still not arrived...

Oh the good old gain some qualifications nonsense, your a low skilled worker, so deserve to be treated like shit. Even if your job is important, as in road sweeper, postie, supermarket worker, you should accept any old shit. Or you could join a union that means, you stand up for your own and other rights and not be walked over and have to foist your children onto "colleagues".

Have a bit more self respect for yourself and respect for others.

This.

The actual point is to preserve a delivery service which isn't part of the gig economy, pays workers a fair wage, and doesn't condone leaving valuable items on a doorstep/in a bin/at a completely different address.
That's the point of Royal Mail.

Exactly!

venus7 · 14/12/2022 19:02

Justcheckingimnotmad · 14/12/2022 17:50

I hope you all realise that these other delivery companies dump their non cost effective mail on Royal Mail because they HAVE to deliver. So if we get rid of Royal Mail as some of you are hoping for we will not have a mail service.

Exactly this......a lack of awareness. Easy to take these services and standards for granted.

Royal Mail have done all the above to me.

At the end of the day, the most important thing to any delivery service is public trust. These strikes are destroying the public's trust of RM. The workers need to weigh up whether these strikes are worth destroying the business over.

MermaidEyes · 14/12/2022 19:07

It's nonsense. Letters and cards are being delivered

I've also had cards, several letters including a hospital one and bills. Obviously being ignored in my area too.

whataboutya · 14/12/2022 19:17

I wrote this on a different thread but will repost here.

I ordered some medication at the weekend which needs to stay chilled. It was dispatched Monday (via Royal Mail special delivery) and it's still not here.
I'm in two minds what to do, will it still be okay? Should I get a refund from the pharmacy? Or Royal Mail? Pfft. I don't know

Diva66 · 14/12/2022 19:19

I’ve had 2 parcels delivered by Royal Mail today, both Tracked 24 sent yesterday.

ozymandiusking · 14/12/2022 19:24

Sorry I haven't been able to read the full thread. My husband was talking to our regular postie, and he told him that they want them to start using their own vehicles.
Which I think is a bad move. But I can't help feeling that with these strikes they are shooting themselves in the foot.
I can't see anything online about Evri not delivering, is it that they are snowed under and taking longer?

TheWitchOfShields · 14/12/2022 19:24

I got a pile of letters dated 14-16th November last week

Still waiting on 4 parcels that were sent out on 30th November. DPD havent been much better though, took them 6 days to deliver a 48hr parcel.

Evri, on the other hand, ordered coats and boots on Monday, delivered by Evri today.....

rosemarysalter · 14/12/2022 19:24

Not very Royal is it

CarerWhoCaresTooMuch · 14/12/2022 19:33

I had a parcel received by Royal Mail on 24th October With 48hr tracking. Still not delivered currently in the hands of the company who sent it waiting for Royal mail to confirm as lost so I can get a refund or item resent.😡😡😡

whatisthisinmyburger · 14/12/2022 19:37

It’s awful, never known it anything like this before! I run a business and thankfully send everything Tracked 24 or 48 anyway, if we were sending 1st class I’d imagine the business would have taken a huge hit with refunds/replacements.

To be honest, I underestimated the disruption it would cause (expecting delays of maybe 1 week) but about 50 UK parcels sent Tracked 24 on the 21st November arrived with customers on the 12th December… 3 weeks! I’ve switched to DPD for UK parcels now but stuck with them for international.

I’d recommend anyone to avoid them for now - if it’s not a time sensitive parcel, it’ll get there eventually with RM but I wouldn’t send anything untracked. They say that they’re prioritising special delivery too - they aren’t. Heard many cases of special delivery taking 1-3 weeks. I do support the strikes and would love RM to fix this but I can’t see any good coming out of this for the workers or the quality of service going forward.

CammieKennaway · 14/12/2022 19:44

I ordered a memorial stone for my baby brother who we finally found after 34 years. He's currently in an unmarked grave in a Baby Garden but the wonderful staff at the cemetery have given me permission to place a small memorial cube with his name, DOB and a small poem and I ordered it over 2 weeks ago so that it would be here for his birthday so he could finally have a proper memorial with his name on, so he wasn't an unknown baby anymore.

The wonderful person who made it, sent it just after 3.30pm on 2nd Dec and has sent me tracking receipts to prove it - she's even chased up Royal Mail last week for me but it's still totally unmoved (and probably lost) at one of the main warehouses.

Today is my baby brother's birthday and I can't even describe how I feel about this. Keep trying to console myself that in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter as he won't know and there are other people in the world going through far, far worse.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/12/2022 19:50

I returned two orders of clothes to the same company on 5th December. RM managed to deliver the smallest one but the other one is still sitting in the sorting office. I presume companies will either have to extend the return period or refund anyway if parcels are lost. Someone will be out of pocket one way or another, hopefully the company and not me as I presume they can claim from the RM!

Fluff3 · 14/12/2022 18:11

My husband works for the Royal Mail, the CEO has told the postpeople not to deliver any cards, letters, bills or hospital appointments untill February. They have been told to deliver parcels only. Any post person caught doing so faces dispilinary action. The Royal Mail then want to blame the strikes, blamming the posties for non delivery of mail. The posties have also been told that any member of staff who leaks this infomation out, will be sacked on the spot. The post people dont agree with this, but fear for their jobs.

SurferRona · 14/12/2022 19:59

RM staff, the posties, are really good. I’ve seen them look out and check in for older people on their own- even if not delivering post, they’ve fetched bits of food on snowy days, catch runaway pets. They basically perform a safety net social service as neighbours and neighbourhoods churn and or fail. Does Evri or Amazon do that?! No!!!. The proposals are just bloody vandalism and I’m glad their representing organisation is standing up for them. Support your postie!! 💗😊

Bunnyfuller · 14/12/2022 20:07

They’re striking for a pay rise which equates to the cost of living. As are many others. MOs received a 13% pay rise.

why is it ok for MPs but no one else? Yes, it’s fucking inconvenient, yes you’re still paying (that’s the senior leadership ok-ing still taking the money whilst knowing they can’t fulfil - and our govt are allowing that).

How else do we get some equality and fairness? Moaning about the inconvenience is playing directly into the rich’ hands, when they assume we’re all,too concerned with the little stuff instead of a just and fair nation.

we’ve Had important documents go astray.it’s shit. We’re in the police, we see our ability to serve the public properly shafted at every turn, every day since 2010. We deserve more. We all deserve more. Something has to give. It’s like living in a dystopian movie rn. People in full time work unable to heat their homes, and using moisture traps to absorb damp.

keep moaning and keep feeding the rich.

IndiaRose22 · 14/12/2022 20:17

I must be the only one not having problems with them, actually can't fault them

Greenshed · 14/12/2022 20:34

I think we’ll all be receiving our Xmas cards in February!!

Irongiant · 14/12/2022 20:46

Yes strikes are a pain, that’s the point. The disruption gives us an opportunity to reflect on how much we value the service and very possibly take it for granted. So many of our services have been turned into profit-making opportunities for share-holders who enjoy the rewards of the hard graft and diminishing returns of the workers. It is exploitation.
I live in a rural area and during lockdown our postie wore a different costume every day to cheer up all those on his round especially the elderly and isolated individuals. He stopped at the gate for a quick chat to check up on how people were coping and even brought supplies to those who couldn’t get out to a shop.
Yes it’s a pain to not know if post will arrive before Christmas but I wholeheartedly support the strikers. We were all so happy to stand out and bang saucepans for our nurses and frontline workers during lockdown, how quickly we forget.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 14/12/2022 20:47

I am totally behind the striking postal workers. It was well documented that strikes would happen at xmas so if it was so important to send a piece of paper that ends up in recycling, you should have done it sooner or not at all and given the money to a charity instead, or sent a Whatsapp or Facebook message. Anyone whinging about them going on strike 'at this time of year' - that's the point! It has to be done with maximum impact to make the powers that be show they're serious. It's a last resort, they don't do it for fun. They lose pay on strike days. But their cause is important to them. Good Luck to them, I hope they get the pay and conditions they deserve. Will I be bothered if my Grandson doesn't get his birthday card? No. Because I'll still FaceTime him. Will he be miffed if he doesn't get it in time? Will he eff. There are far more important things to get put out by.

E17Stowmum · 14/12/2022 20:56

It's a private company now, not a public service. Forget the 'Royal' brand.
Therefore the goal is to maximise profit for shareholders and directors. Until it's stripped of all assets then sold on.

Isinglass20 · 14/12/2022 21:00

Mislewhoandwine
I agree support the posties. This organisation delivers to places which the other companies won’t touch. Posties have a sense of duty.
In Europe the role of postman is recognised as important.
Like everything else in the UK postman’s role, and that of teachers and nurses downgraded.
I’m with the Scots and the Welsh in wanting to separate from this horrible country

Florenz · 14/12/2022 21:01

It's because people are sending Whatsapp or Facebook messages instead of letters or cards through the post that all this is happening. The world has changed and RM staff have to accept that their job has to change along with it. You can't keep paying people to deliver "bits of paper that end up in recycling" along with catching dogs and looking in on the elderly, when the business is now in delivering parcels at times when people are at home to accept them. That is the business. RM workers either accept that or they need to find another job that is more to their liking. There is no third option.
