Weather hysteria

To not get the media’s obsession at the minute with the current cold spell 🤷‍♂️
I get the emphasis on the weather with the current energy situation, but we live in a country that experiences cold weather at this time of year regularly. The ‘Beast from the east’ didn’t get this much airtime so wtf?

OP posts:
JamSandle · 12/12/2022 16:52

Because the media likes to sensationalise everything all the time.

ILikeBigSaladsAndICannotLie · 12/12/2022 16:53

I'm in the North (Yorkshire) & we've had no snow so far, not predicted any either. Lots of freezing fog though. But it's not got above 1°c in the last week, overnight it's getting to about -6°c, the forecast says it's not going to improve until Saturday (it might just about thaw during the daytime). The points around Leeds railway station were frozen/malfunctioning this morning, which was fun... especially as lots of people were trying to get work, shopping etc sorted before the strikes start tomorrow.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 12/12/2022 16:57

@notimagain yep and they cancelled flights where they have more than 1x a day to that destination i.e BA have a few flights day going to NYC.

We need to focus on the positives, I am able to work from home so I don't have to leave, yes I can't afford to keep having the heating on but I have an oodie and lots of hot drinks.

I think the weather is picking up next week 3-7° higher in parts so fingers crossed.

I really do struggle with winter and I suffer with SAF so I try my best to stay positive.

InFiveMins · 12/12/2022 16:58

I agree OP. It's bloody ridiculous how much the media overhype every single last thing they can. It's winter, it's cold, literally nothing new.

antelopevalley · 12/12/2022 17:01

LOL Its winter its cold get over it!

Its unusually cold for a sustained period. I am looking at Met forecast and no I do not usually get a forecast saying for days by 6pm it will be minus 3 but feel even colder. That is very cold for Britain.

OneTC · 12/12/2022 17:02

Driving on busy, well travelled rural roads today and about 50% of cars can't drive faster than 20mph anywhere, even though the snow is next to the road and not actually on it.

What is all that about? Grin

Rowthe · 12/12/2022 17:03

Its because it affected London.

If it had been anywhere else it would be business as usual

BloodyHellKen · 12/12/2022 17:03

I agree OP. On the radio I heard a woman mewling about travelling from London to Oxfordshire by car and how it took so long and there were abandoned cars and they only had 1 small bottle of water between all of them etc etc.

You would have thought she'd tried to do the journey on her hands and knees from her sorrowful voice. She sounded embarrassingly pathetic.

Why she didn't a) plan ahead better, b) stop off at a motel c) delay the journey is beyond me.

garlictwist · 12/12/2022 17:05

I agree. It's cold but not unusually so and we have had far worse snow where I live (N Yorks) in normal winters than we have had this one - but without the fanfare.

Maybe people have forgotten what winter is like because it's been such a mild year?

CoffeeBoy · 12/12/2022 17:05

I suppose there’s a lack of other “big” news so they need something to write about.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/12/2022 17:07

SallyWD · 12/12/2022 15:57

Yes my in-laws who live in Europe just called because even their media is reporting that snow has stopped everything in the UK! I'm in the North and we've had no snow.

I’m in the North.

We have shit tons of it. Roads covered in ice, fire engines getting stuck…

Notjusta · 12/12/2022 17:08

Surely it is because of the current cost of living that it's getting such a lot of coverage? There will be more people that usual impacted by unusually cold weather because many can't afford to keep their homes warm enough.

I do agree, it's the same every time there is significant snow in the south east (where I am from), it's not just this year.

bellac11 · 12/12/2022 17:10

notimagain · 12/12/2022 16:49

Exactly..

I've been watching with interest...there may have been a brief closure at Gatwick last night for sweeping and yes, there were some delays cancellations into some airports this AM because of a forecast possibility of freezing fog but that was about the sum of it.

This certainly wasn't Planes Trains etc

Erm says someone who didnt have to travel through it and ended up 100s of miles from where they should have been. And it wasnt just Gatwick

notimagain · 12/12/2022 17:12

bellac11 · 12/12/2022 17:10

Fair enough, but are airports still closed?

Bewitched005 · 12/12/2022 17:16

This. There have been lots of threads asking should I put the heating on / I can only afford heating on for an hour, etc.

Crabwoman · 12/12/2022 17:17

I am in the northwest and we had snow of Friday. Slight thaw and sleet on Saturday and then - figues ever since. It is lethal out there.

It's my Birthday this week and in 40 years I've never known it snow before my birthday or temps this cold, for this length of time.

Currently sat in A&E with my gran and there is a 7 hour wait time due to some pretty nasty looking trips and falls.

MushMonster · 12/12/2022 17:18

It has been below zero for a few days here. That is not the norm. It tends to be frosty in the morning, we have to de-ice the car, but then it goes above zero during the day.
But we seem to be staying at zero or negative all day around.
It feels really cold. A very sharp cold.
No snow around here, which is good!
I can only imagine the chaos in areas where snow was not predicted, with all the traffic, no grit on roads and pavements.

Cas112 · 12/12/2022 17:19

They always sensationalise the weather, hot weather, cold weather, rainy weather, windy weather

It's clickbait, they get readers with the articles

Joystir59 · 12/12/2022 17:29

Very rare to get such an extended cold snap this side of Xmas. North Yorks coast here

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/12/2022 17:43

It’s freezing here. Roads impassable, emergency vehicles getting stuck. -6 for 10 days at start of December isn’t normal.

Plus, some of my city have had their gas cut off for 19 days. I cannot imagine the cold.

Mydogatemypurse · 12/12/2022 18:06

I think it will have much worse of an impact that previous bad weather due to the fact that people cant heat their houses or have food. People will be dying and getting sick already.

gettingolderandgrumpier · 12/12/2022 18:09

the media makes everyone exaggerate too. It’s all it’s going to her to minus 10 with 10 inches of snow etc . I mean yes it’s cold and I could really do with it being not as cold but we wrap up and get on with it well what else can we do ?

Merlott · 12/12/2022 18:15

YABU last night there was a thread where OP was stuck for hours on a road in Kent!!!!!

The South and London can't cope with snow, it all goes mental and everything stops. Train tracks had snow on which meant they couldn't run. Bit ridiculous looking at the pics, it was an icing sugar dusting!

So YABU because although the weather itself is nothing extreme, it has an extreme impact so that's why it's being reported!!

SleeplessInEngland · 12/12/2022 18:17

Well a shoitload of trains have been cancelled where I live so I’m not sure you can blame it all on the media.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2022 18:25

It has caused significant disruption in places. That surely is news.

French media contains news articles about their cold weather. Same with Germany. It's normal to carry news about weather when it is disruptive.
