First day in new job today...

...and I'm really quite nervous. I am a little socially awkward at times, which doesn't particularly show in interviews because a) they're over teams which I find much easier, and b) I'm just answering questions as opposed to making small talk or engaging in a true back and forth. The team I'll be working in is described as 'trailblazing' (an all female team who work to make life better for children). They've had a lot of good press recently. I'm feeling the pressure and starting to think I'm not good enough for this. Feeling myself entering my classic self destruct mindset and need to snap out of it! Might feel better after coffee. Does anyone have any tips for an anxious 30 something year old who feels like it's her first day of school?

Have that coffee, smile, and be friendly! Good luck!

Deep breath. The company chose you. They think you’ll fit in well. First days are always awkward and weird and I always feel like a nuisance having to ask everything, but tomorrow will be simpler and so on until you know the ropes. Focus on the basics today - find out what other people do, where the things you need to do your job are etc. no one is expecting you to deliver trailblazing stuff on your first day….

good luck! You’ll be absolutely fine!

Hi, I started a new job just recently. Congrats!

I'm much older than you and have started many times. My main tip is accept it is normal to be nervous. Only total arrogant cocks start new things with zero nerves.

Just smile at people, it is ok to be a bit quiet on day one. If in doubt I say something generically positive like 'I've been really looking forward to starting, I was so pleased to be offered the job' or something. Also I was honest that the first week is always weird. I already feel much more settled.

I hope you have a good first day! They appointed you for a reason.

Also if you are nervous, just remember you can't be as shit at this job as Liz Truss was at hers Shock

Thank you both. It doesn't help that I'm working from home but have to travel to the office by 9am which is 2.5 hours away. I was on the train at 5.45 and am absolutely shattered!

I don't have any major tips, but you got the job so they know that you can do it, and you will be able to. Tell yourself that you can, instead of the negative self talk - literally repeat ' I will be fine, with a smile on your face, or something similar. lots of people think they are socially awkward, even the ones that come across as Uber confident. Also, how amazing that you get to work in an amazing organization with other women, think how much you and they will grow working together and the good you'll do. Believe in yourself, smile, tell yourself something positive, on repeat if need be, and enjoy. Good luck OP

You will be amazing but as someone who is starting a new job mid January I understand your nerves! Just think today at 5 (or when you finish) will be the worst over. Sending you lots of luck xxxx

One mumsnetter suggested this on another thread for starting a new job:

be early, be reliable, be pleasant, work hard, catch the balls without dropping people in it, keep your own counsel, show an interest, be prepared to deliver at the grade above consistently & be quietly confident.

Remember why you there - how you got to this day, this morning, this minute.

You applied for a job, accepted, you were intervened, recruited . You got the job- you are the next trailblazer!

Have fun, enjoy the day!

They hired you, they want you, and they want you to succeed. You beat a lot of other people to get this job. You have something they value. So remember that, and keep breathing.

I have a new starter today and I'm nervous too - hoping the induction is as good as it can be and that he's a good fit with the team so they might be feeling the same!

Good luck today and don't get into your head about it - there will be lots of information to absorb so focus on that :)

Eat something (if you haven’t already).
