To get really anxious in this weather?

I know it's daft. I know other counties manage in far worse. But it just makes me really anxious. I think the main thing is when my dc is at his dads the night before and he's getting driven home at 7:30 in the morning when the roads are still icy and the fog is dense. I just hate it. I wish we could just cabin up in this weather and not leave. Dramatic and pathetic I know. But everything feels so much more dangerous. Fog and ice being the key ones. I'm naturally an anxious person so I overthink every possible worse case scenario. Does anyone else feel like this?

Which county are you in @holyfrijole ? Which counties in the UK do you think manage it better than your one?

Justcallmebebes · 11/12/2022 22:18

I think OP means countries

A bit. Sometimes worry about boiler packing in, frozen pipes bursting and yes, driving on icy roads.

Prefer this though to storms. Hate lying in bed at night hearing 50 or 60 mph winds outside and random banging noises and wondering what damage I will wake up to.

FindingMeno · 11/12/2022 22:21

I don't, but anxiety is anxiety and it loves a perch to sit on.
You can't help feeling the way you do.

holyfrijole · 11/12/2022 22:21

Sorry I mean countries.

I worry because I'm self-employed and can't get to work if the roads are bad.

Singleandproud · 11/12/2022 22:24

It's just the UK isn't prepared for extremes of any weather. No air con for heat waves, no snow tires for snow. Most people rarely drive in ice and fog really whereas in other countries who have more sustained weather they are both more prepared and more experienced.

I don't worry in this weather so much, but windy weather or storms really panic me!

holyfrijole · 11/12/2022 22:55

I think it's just the dc I worry about. And other family. I can deal with the cold and the inconvenience, I just worry about everyone's safety.

No, strangely I find this weather really calming. It's the boiling hot summer weather where you just can't cool down that makes me anxious.

RaininSummer · 11/12/2022 23:01

I hate it too. Feels dangerous when people have to go out and puts me on edge. Am dreading the walk to work tommorow as last time I slipped on ice I got whiplash and still have a big scar on my knee.

Bluebellbike · 11/12/2022 23:11

It makes me anxious. Snow that has melted a bit then frozen again is so slippery. I am unsteady on my feet and severely sight impaired so am in effect a prisoner in my home.

I can't wait for it to completely melt away. Prefer howling gales and pouring rain to this.

DrCoconut · 12/12/2022 00:00

I loathe winter. It really affects my mental health - I feel so shut in and claustrophobic with the dark nights and cold weather. I'd much rather be eating ice cream at the park at 8pm than shut in by 4 watching it rain. Now I have to clear ice from the car in the mornings before I can do the school run and get to work too. I am so done with this winter now and can't wait for spring and summer.

Mentallycollapsed · 12/12/2022 00:04

Yanbu. I love this time of year but feel really anxious in the heat (anything over 25) so I have sympathy for you from a perspective of experiencing weather inducing anxiety

Akitamum · 12/12/2022 00:10

Me! Ice makes me so anxious, I think I am developing a phobia of falling and breaking a bone. I live on a hill that never catches the sun, we had a small amount of snow that has now frozen solid and won't melt for days. My husband is away all week, I have a huge dog who I am worried will pull me over if she spots a fox and I need to drive to work which I am dreading. Got myself in such a state of worry, if we weren't short staffed I would call in sick. Ridiculous I know, but I am so scared of ice 😬

3catsandcounting · 12/12/2022 00:45

Ice has always bothered me. Back in the 80s I did a fulll twirl in the road driving a Mini Metro! Fog, again, worries me. I feel so out of control.
I now worry about about my young adult DCs driving in these conditions.

Whattodowithallthebooks · 12/12/2022 01:20

I get really anxious when it's icy. I'm terrified of slipping on it so get panic attacks about leaving the house if it's icy and also scared of driving or being a passenger if the roads are icy. Our road and pavement has been ĺike an Ice rink since it snowed on Thursday even though most other streets are clear now. Gritters don't come down our street and no sun touches the road or pavements at this end so no idea when it'll clear.
