Why don't people like runners now?

I'm sometimes fortunate to be able to go for a run in the evenings as some me time from working and being a dad to my son.
I remember in lockdown and before my son was born when my wife and I would go running, the torrent of abuse we would get from others. Things like run in the road or get away from me/ don't breath on me.
I figured since that ship has sailed I would restart as my wife wanted me to be healthy and fit for our son ( my diet is/was pretty much beige and crisps lol).
Yet still, the comments. It was a bit icy on the road so I didn't feel safe running there and don't anyway as I'm not a car. So I'm running on the pavement and I'm still getting the glares and tuts, even had one woman whip out her mask.
Then it's the deliberate not moving. Is it such a crime to want to have a run?
I feel I'm on the same hate level as a cyclist. Unless there was a running lane that would be handy.
I can't afford or have space for a treadmill or to go to the gym but why am I being punished? People are baffling at the best of times.

I think, seeing the responses on here, you should consider adjusting your clear-the-way stomping approach and accept that some people will be frightened or dislike you doing that. I'd say the negative interactions you experience are directly correlated to your behaviour.

I'd acknowledged the loud running previously. If you read all my posts I don't expect anyone to get out my way I own the pavement and I don't open my mouth. Right well I've upset a few people and I apologise.

Lol! You haven’t upset me at all, I’m staggered that you don’t realise a large man running up behind people pisses them off! You have come here to say why does everyone hate runners, most other people have said errr what are you on about and the penny doesn’t seem to be dropping the problem is most likely you! I have to go all MN bingo on you but this is a real lesson in male entitlement. You are 27 not 17 and have had enough wit to get married and have a child so you cannot be that out of touch

Well I wasn't prepared to be widowed but thank you.

I am so sorry you have been widowed at such a young age with a young child, that’s truly tragic and you have my every sympathy.
Just try to bear in mind others when out for a run

I do though but I obviously have to change it which I have acknowledged.

My only problem with runners, are the ones who go running with their dog off the lead running behind them pretending they are completely oblivious to their dog crapping on the street or park behind them and not clearing it up.

That woman sound a bit odd tbh (and I still wear masks indoors).

I've not had a problem with anyone being rude to me. The people hogging the footpath and dogs leads across the path do my head in though. I'm tempted to get a bell sometimes.

I wish runners would have bells! It’s just that sometimes I’ve got the dogs on long leads and a runner will suddenly run past. I’ve got a reactive dog (wouldn’t hurt a fly but yappy and sometimes lunges) and I don’t have time to pull them in.

You haven't upset me either! You need to hear what the message is about your running behaviour.

Yes I do, I thought I was clear in my post that it was when I was driving out of side roads (usually my own).

This. They just suddenly appear and run in front of you from the the left when you’re turning left onto a major road so looking right. The fact that they are running, fast, means that you don’t have time to actually see them to give way to them. I’ve only ever had a couple apologise as they realise they’ve been dicks.

As a runner it's the people who insist on using the entire path and refuse to move even a tiny bit aside who really piss me off. Narrow pavement with a road on one side and a wall on the other, someone who obviously sees me coming but think they can just continue ambling down the middle leaving no space for me to pass. Or couples/families who simply have to walk abreast.

There are just a lot of people who seem to have no awareness of anything or anyone around them.

I find this though when I'm walking or running. Often people with young children (teenagers on phones also) Groups of people walking 2 or 3 or 4 abreast and either I am invisible, or somehow it's expected for me to step aside into the grass/mud or even the road (regardless how busy) to let them all past as they are allegedly unable to move into single file or even 2 abreast to let a single person past?Confused
When my DC were young I often ushered them into single file or possibly grabbed a coat collar to move them from someone's way.now we all automatically do it if someone else is about to pass.to me it's normal but seems unusual in the town I live!!

Actually before I go to sleep I do have one more question but don't want to spam the boards. My son is 18 months old and babbles loads and makes lots of noise and maybe says dadadada and mumumumum, ta although sounds like da and nononononono but it could all just be noise. Should I be concerned that he isn't talking yet?

I'm like a bloody meerkat when walking my dogs. I didn't realise I had hearing issues but I struggle to hear anyone coming up behind me.
I really appreciate cyclists digging their bell or runners shouting 'coming through' far more than the shock of so,energy whizzing past me at speed, or, worse still, me stepping sideways into their path!
I'm happy to share, thoughtfulness goes all ways 😊

FlorettaB · 11/12/2022 19:27

I walk my dog in an area with a lot of cyclists and runners. I try to be considerate of them as it’s a shared space. I do find myself turning my head when runners go past huffing away. Not because of Covid but because it’s just gross and inconsiderate - I don’t want you panting in my face. It’s weird because it seems to be a 100% male phenomenon. I’ve never had a woman do that to me and there are loads of women runners around. It’s not even those struggling to run or who look a bit unfit. It’s not older men either - over 55s don’t seem to do it. It’s the running equivalent of manspreading.

lieselotte · 11/12/2022 19:27

It's hardly the runners (or faster solo walkers) who take up space and cause a problem on the pavements. It's people who insist on walking two (and more) abreastvery slowly, have dogs on extendable (or no) leads and drivers who don't pay attention to the updated Highway Code rules.

Runners should not run on roads, but pavements can be uneven, so they may decide to run on the roads in the dark. But if you do that, please wear hi-vis and don't do it when there are cars around!

Ratched · 11/12/2022 19:27

*dinging, not digging! Although each to their own......🤣

lieselotte · 11/12/2022 19:28

I always run or walk behind the lead (or even second) car at a junction so they can just drive out if there is a gap in the traffic.

But if you are approaching the junction, and have not yet reached it, you have to stop anyway, so don't expect runners and walkers to stop - the end of a side road is the extension of the pavement!

My mum encountered one of these recently, but unfortunately for the runner it was on a section of river towpath where you have to turn round and come back the way you came, so when she came back, my mum told her to pick up her dog's poo!

I was told 5/6 'words' in context at 18 months. Don't have to be said correctly. So dada, ball, baaa if they see a picture of a sheep, ta for thank you kind of thing. Might have changed as this was 16 years ago, DS had 5 'words' so wasn't referred.

It’s a really conscious blowing their cheeks out kind of thing that I’ve only seen track athletes do as they slow down. Maybe they spent lockdown reading running magazines and it’s supposed to aid performance???

Devoutspoken · 11/12/2022 19:36

Carry on running, screw all the grumps

Walkingthedog46 · 11/12/2022 19:37

Please, if you are running on the road in unlit, or poorly-lit roads, wear reflective clothing. For everyone’s sake!

I slow down or stop when I see them running out onto the road. The issue is that runners, being much faster, are suddenly there unlike walkers. The highway code says they are meant to stop before crossing and only walk across. Should I stop before the dropped kerb to the footpath as well as at the junction like I am leaving a driveway over a footpath?

OhmygodDont · 11/12/2022 19:41

I used to run and with a club and in competitions so I get but also my last interaction was with a women who ran into my then toddler and then swore at me when the whole other side of the path was empty so yeah she got a mouth full.

NoDatingForOldMen · 11/12/2022 19:46

Runners no, Park Run runners yes, I live near a park that I like cycling round and generally time it to avoid park run, but sometimes I have caught them , but my goodness those people are rude and argumentative and entitled, and will not move, and what’s even more crazy is they all pitch up in massive BMs or Audis or Landies , run 5k then go home again, !, madness

Dacadactyl · 11/12/2022 19:48

Oh come off it...who cycles round a park run course at park run time? And has the cheek to say they're entitled 😂
