To ask what hobbies people have?

I’m a 27yo woman that does absolutely nothing for myself 🤦🏼‍♀️. I have a DS(2) & I work long hours as a nurse but I just feel like I don’t do anything in my free time. Me & DP were talking about Christmas presents & he said I’m so hard to buy for because I don’t have many interests which he’s right about. Could I ask what people do as hobbies or just for themselves?

I think it’s a case of try and see what works for you. My mum has knitted for donkeys years but can’t master crochet. I crochet but cant knit. Some people do both.

www.gathered.how I used their guide to help me master crochet which made it easier. They have lots of other crafts on there too

Oh thank you I will try this website

TroysMammy · 11/12/2022 17:18

Card making
Occasional crafts e.g. Christmas wreath, sewing gift bags, sewing felt fruit.
Vegetable gardening
Making chutney from home grown produce
I quite fancy having a go at macrame but totally hopeless at knitting and can only crochet squares.

TroysMammy · 11/12/2022 17:20

@orangesnapples we both know a doll house hobby is expensive 😀.

greenhousegal · 11/12/2022 17:25

Genealogy. Addictive and so many resources online now.
Walking with audiobook to get me away from the genealogy.
Watching crap on YouTube. There are some great gems there, but an awful lot of rubbish aswell.

iwasaterribleteen · 11/12/2022 17:28

In younger years I would go horse riding or to the dry ski slope.

I always regret not learning to play the piano.

I wish I'd gone to evening classes (much more popular years ago) for:

Advanced cookery
Sewing (clothes and home furnishings)
A foreign language

I'd like to take up silversmithing.

When I watch Strictly I sometimes wish I'd gone to Lindy hop classes.

I know it's never to late to learn but I struggle to remember my name at the moment!

BelenaConhamHarter · 11/12/2022 17:30

Cross stitch
Minecraft city building
Reading
Gardening
Cooking

I rotate through, if something inspires me I'll put one thing down and pick something else up.

I'd love to do lace making but it think it's something you need to be taught

BelenaConhamHarter · 11/12/2022 17:32

I've also taken to a computer game called I Love Hue which is just colour shade sorting.

It's a bit addictive

dawnfromgavinandstacey · 11/12/2022 17:34

I read.

I walk the dogs a lot.

I am a florist on the side. I make no actual money as I do everything for cost from friends and family but I am good at it Flowers it just makes me happy when people love what I have made for them. I do everything from garlands at Christmas to normal bunches. I love doing it!

Crackof · 11/12/2022 17:34

Ooh. Reading (and audiobooks). Drawing and painting. Film photography. CPD for my career ... I do really like it. Reiki self healing and shamanic journeying. Webinars and things on psychological and spiritual topics. Hiking and rock climbing and knitting. I've just picked up learning the piano again after a few years off. I've been learning some carols.
Gardening is good too. I like being muddy.

Crabbi · 11/12/2022 17:35

Eating good food and drinking good wine.

mdh2020 · 11/12/2022 17:37

Reading, cinema, theatre
Painting
Gardening
Have you tried colouring books?
jigsaws on my iPad

glasshole · 11/12/2022 17:44

I'm a recurve archer and currently working my way through the 252 and 6 in 6 schemes. I love it, nothing matters but the next arrow and it brings me a huge amount of satisfaction. I am also an avid crafter. Currently focusing on perfecting my sourdough bread and working on my stained glass technique. I also enjoy reading.

MardyMincepie · 11/12/2022 18:05

Long term hobbies are reading, video gaming, board gaming, sewing, crafting, cycling , flower arranging, sea swimming and hiking.

More short lived hobbies but ones that lasted a few years are belly dancing, ballroom dancing, adult ballet, tap dancing, pottery, watercolour classes, dungeons and dragons.

My absolute biggest regret is I can’t climb trees anymore, as lack upper body strength . I climbed my last in my forties when I taught my DS how to safely climb a tree. I do really miss that.

Have also done a lot of voluntary work, I do have high levels of energy, always have, Mother was the same till she hit her mid eighties.

orangesnapples · 11/12/2022 18:14

@TroysMammy it took me 2 days to make my sofa 😂. And don't get me started on working out the scale lol was cheap and time consuming. So obsessive.

catsonahottinroof · 11/12/2022 18:17

The only hobbies I always come back to are reading and baking. I've tried language learning, and while you can get so far on Duolingo, I think in the end you need lessons in person which can be easier said than done. Musical instrument learning is another that you can start off by yourself, eg keyboard.
If you want to do something outside the house, what about joining a gym that has classes? Then you can try out different classes but there isn't the expectation of going every week.

chorusline79 · 11/12/2022 18:20

Singing in a community choir - so uplifting
Book club once a month
Sea swimming with friends once a week
Bootcamp
Running

clary · 11/12/2022 18:32

Hi OP I have a few things I do which have changed over the years (I am a lot older than you and my DC are late teens +)

  • I swim several times a week (done that for many years)
  • I run (about 15 years)
  • I do yoga daily (2.5 years - love this)
  • I am in a book club (about 15 years)
  • I bake (on and off, never fancy sugarcraft tho)
  • I like a quiz tho that's more online than in a pub now bc google on phones
  • I love the movies but we got out of the habit when the DC were small sadly
  • I also volunteer . Over the years this has been as a school governor, as a PTA member, at the local church and now at the local club for a sport my DC used to do. They no longer do it but I found I enjoyed it so I am an official which is very busy in a seasonal way, and also on the committee in a role related to my work.
I sound a bit busy eh, but in fact the movies and quiz I don't really do any more, and some of the other things just take up 30 mins of my day. I think I ma easy to buy for tho as a book, some running shoes, yoga or running or swimming kit, or cinema tickets would all be good.
clary · 11/12/2022 18:39

Meant to say that if someone is looking for a social life through their hobbies, most of mine are pretty solitary (tho of course you can join a running club) but the book club is a social thing and the athletics club is very social - not as in, I will meet these people for a drink next weekend, but as in, it is a very small world so you see the same people at meetings and get to know them. It's good to talk to other people outside the echo chamber of your family and your work, I think (should say that my work has always been populated by people with similar views eg I was a teacher for many years). Other viewpoints are really refreshing.

Mary46 · 11/12/2022 18:47

My mother and I own a horse between us. ( Major Tom ). She rides him more than me as she has more time. Plus I am restoring an old car, “ The Duchess “ ( long term project ).

Clarich007 · 11/12/2022 18:56

Theatre, reading... I am addicted to my Kindle... films, gardening, cross stitch, animals, cooking and love crosswords. I can't sit down at night without either a puzzle or sewing while I am watching tv. Feels weird to just sit and watch!
