To ask what hobbies people have?

I’m a 27yo woman that does absolutely nothing for myself 🤦🏼‍♀️. I have a DS(2) & I work long hours as a nurse but I just feel like I don’t do anything in my free time. Me & DP were talking about Christmas presents & he said I’m so hard to buy for because I don’t have many interests which he’s right about. Could I ask what people do as hobbies or just for themselves?

Baking. I enjoy it so much I bake more than we could possibly eat so I donate things to a shelter for the volunteers to enjoy during their shift. I make all our bread and kneading dough is a wonderful form of stress-relief.

Newmama29 · 11/12/2022 14:28

I would love to be able to bake but I’ve never got the hang of it & absolutely hate the cleaning up stage 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’d probably eat it all too 😂

Just reading and knitting. A lot of that since 1st lockdown, when I started making worry monsters/animals for a charity that distributes them to children’s therapists.
A while ago I’d have added playing the piano, but that’s rather taken a back seat lately. Although I will be digging my Easy Carols books out soon. 🎄🎅🏻

No idea if this is the sort of thing you’re interested in at all, but learning languages has become exponentially easier to access over the last ten years with flexible/remote online classes and tutors on sites like italki. No need to commit to a particular day and time at the local college now.

Learning languages is one of mine, anyway. Sometimes that’s learning out of a book like Teach Yourself, sometimes it’s online classes. Sometimes it’s just watching stuff on Netflix. I take breaks and dabble in different ones, but it’s always something I come back to and it’s easier than ever now.

KitchiHuritAngeni · 11/12/2022 14:52

Art, all kinds of art, from drawing to painting to making dreamcatchers and sculpting and everything in between, I always have about 10 projects on the go at any one time.

Nodney · 11/12/2022 14:59

I like jigsaws, classical music, crochet and reading. I also like going for walks, my cats and looking around charity shops.

WinterLobelia · 11/12/2022 15:00

I also love looking at lifestyle vlogs on youtube and trying to use it to make my home nicer.

mamabear715 · 11/12/2022 15:04

I understand, @Newmama29
Some hobbies are too time consuming or too much 'work' or I'm not fit enough, lol, I just like pottering about doing just what I want to at that particular time! :-)

CornishYarg · 11/12/2022 15:06

Tennis
Gym
Sewing - cross stitch and making clothes

Andsoforth · 11/12/2022 15:11

I’m a bit start and stop too - I’ve made peace with that though. It’s good to try new things and when if it’s supposed to be fun you shouldn’t have to prove it’s worthiness by how long or intensely you’ve stuck with it.

I didn’t manage much of anything besides reading and over planning birthdays when I had a two year old. It’s not a season that lends itself to much else.

holierthanthou73 · 11/12/2022 15:14

None sadly so watching this thread for inspiration as I think it would be really good for my MH

CrimsonAlligator · 11/12/2022 15:24

If you want a hobby that doesn’t have a steep learning curve, doesn’t create a ton of mess and doesn’t need a huge amount of supplies, how about needle felting? It’s basically just stabbing a bit of wool until it becomes solid, but you can make some fun stuff with it. Lots of kits available. Some examples here:

These are all great suggestions. I suppose I’m a bit of a start & give up person 🤣. I started knitting during lockdown when I was pregnant but I wasn’t great at it so gave it up. I love a jigsaw but not sure where to set one up in the house 🤦🏼‍♀️. I read every night, that’s one hobby I do have I suppose lol. Between working & looking after DS I don’t have much free time to do much activities out the house that don’t involve my DS. My DP works away & the shift pattern is erratic so it’s hard to join any clubs or anything as I can’t commit due to that & my work schedule 🤦🏼‍♀️

You can get jigsaw cases that can be zipped up so the jigsaw can be stuffed out of the way, under the sofa or somewhere, when you are not working on it.

I play an instrument and am in a local band which is quite a sociable thing. However I realise that sort of thing is hard for you with a little one. I didn't really get on to it until mine was much older.

I love crafts. Apart from crochet I am not especially good at them but I enjoy having a go. I also like making things from kits. DH knows when he has to buy n e a present that "something to make" always goes down well

JadeSeahorse · 11/12/2022 15:42

Reading, visiting my disabled dd and learning Japanese.

I'm not very sociable.😄

LaMagdalena · 11/12/2022 15:51

Learning languages

Travelling and exploring new places

Walking and swimming (no interest in competitive sports, only ones that I can do alone).

Listening to podcasts

Cats, and making friends with cats on walks around town :)

... but yeah, I have a preschooler and I work and personally I find it can be difficult to have the bandwidth for much else. I'd love to start reading novels again like I used to.

Bubl · 11/12/2022 15:59

Genealogy and baking.

Thank you for starting this thread. I’m on the search for a new hobby too.

iloveeverykindofcat · 11/12/2022 15:59

I play guitar. I'm very competetent, but nothing special. It was never going to be a career for me but I get a lot of pleasure from it and it comes in handy quite a lot at Christmases etc. I can sight-read pretty well so if people ask for a carol or something I can pull something out of the bag. I also really enjoy learning about music, how it works, and different the ways different cultures conceptualize music.

FOJN · 11/12/2022 16:02

Dressmaking, EPP, cross stitch, reading, cooking, walking.

iloveeverykindofcat · 11/12/2022 16:02

Though clearly, less competent at spelling today.

Brokendaughter · 11/12/2022 16:06

Numismatics with a side order of stacking.

I'm also one of those 'creative' people who makes things in all sorts of mediums, so I always have something on the go.

I'm also currently creating a load of 3d characters to rig up for a short animation, which is something I've been doing for about 20 years now, so it's probably the hobby I stick with the most.
It gets easier every year as home computers & software get better as well as cheaper.

Brokendaughter · 11/12/2022 16:11

I used to have Lego as a hobby but I ran out of space to store it even if not built & swapped to stacking which takes up very little room, but I do still build a few models.
