To ask what hobbies people have?

I’m a 27yo woman that does absolutely nothing for myself 🤦🏼‍♀️. I have a DS(2) & I work long hours as a nurse but I just feel like I don’t do anything in my free time. Me & DP were talking about Christmas presents & he said I’m so hard to buy for because I don’t have many interests which he’s right about. Could I ask what people do as hobbies or just for themselves?

Reading, on-line courses (Google workers educational association - they have a vast range), swimming, theatre.

AliasGrape · 11/12/2022 16:19

Reading - this fizzled out a bit towards the end of pregnancy and for the first 18 months of so of DD’s life but I’ve picked up again now and feel like I’ve for a bit of myself back. I love the 50 book thread on here for ideas and book chat.

Cooking/ baking - Don’t do a huge amount in the week anymore but do usually bake something at least once at the weekend.

Not much else that I’d really consider a true hobby - love the theatre but haven’t been much since DD, think twice in 2 years. As a family we like to go for long walks at the weekend/ on holiday but not in any kind of structured way that would be a proper hobby. I go to a yoga class once a week which I really love but I don’t know if a weekly class constitutes a hobby either!

Biscuitandacuppa · 11/12/2022 16:28

Knitting, cross stitch, reading, I’ve started playing the violin again for the first time in 25 years! I also enjoy jigsaws at Xmas and National Trust properties in the nicer weather.

Alaimo · 11/12/2022 16:29

Cycling, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, ice skating, or going to the gym when the weather is too rubbish for any of those things. That makes me sound super fit and healthy, but I'm not really😆. I'm only mediocre at best at all of these things, but I don't care. I like variety better than being particularly good at any one thing.

Crimblecrumblerules · 11/12/2022 16:31

Rock choir, cross-stitch, reading

soberfabulous · 11/12/2022 16:34

Reading
running
Playing tennis
Pilates
Theatre
Cinema (occasionally, not a huge fan)

Newmama29 · 11/12/2022 16:40

Thanks everyone for your kind suggestions! I’m enjoying reading through them all & defo going to try some of them out. I used to love walking when my DS was smaller as he was happy in his pram but as he’s got older he wants to walk & it’s not as enjoyable 😂. Might try getting back out though! You’ve all convinced me to start a jigsaw again though so off to Amazon to buy that jigsaw case & a new jigsaw! I stared a scrapbook when DS was born to document his wee life but fell off it as life got busier but I may need to pull that out again too.

I used to have Lego as a hobby but I ran out of space to store it even if not built & swapped to stacking which takes up very little room, but I do still build a few models.

What is this stacking of which you speak?

Ponderingwindow · 11/12/2022 16:46

It’s an odd term, but descriptive so I now use it. I’m a Maker. I love creating things and will learn whatever techniques are necessary to make whatever happens to strike my fancy. Knitting, sewing, paper making, eva foam sculpting, some mild wood-working, I’m game to try anything. my workshop gets a bit crazy sometimes

lego

reading for something more physically restful

Ponderingwindow · 11/12/2022 16:47

Stacking????

Tarkan · 11/12/2022 16:53

I've done a variety of crafts over the years. I'll stop something and do something else but I like to hang onto my old stuff because I'll always go back to it eventually.

I did a lot of diamond painting in lockdown and have a few of those to finish off still.

I go to Pilates a couple of times a week and used to do pole fitness which I want to get back to next year, health depending.

I love going to the theatre/musicals, gigs, orchestra, cinema when there's something I want to see if it's local enough (things like gigs/touring musicals we usually have to travel 1.5-2 hours and stay overnight so not always the cheapest or easiest thing to do especially since I don't drive).

My usuals, especially right now when the crappy weather starts up, are just reading, gaming or watching TV while snuggled on the sofa or chair with a fluffy blanket and a hot cup of coffee. I still play Pokémon Go daily, although don't always go out, I sometimes just load it up and catch the Pokémon near my house and that's it.

UnsolicitedOpinions · 11/12/2022 17:02

I also used to do karate but stopped when pregnant and never took up again as I couldn't find a club I liked (we'd moved).

I sort of scrapbook I guess. I have what i call a 'memory book' and put everything in there. last week I put in a little card DS1's form teacher sent him congratulating him for lasting an entire week at school. :) (He has a habit of walking out of class and going to hide under the school dining room pavillion- he has ASD and social anxiety). We stuck that card into our memory book with a very great deal of joy and pleasure.

Usually I put postcards in, tickets from trips out etc. I love it.

Prescottdanni123 · 11/12/2022 17:10

Walking, wildlife photography, crafts, baking, reading

Spidey66 · 11/12/2022 17:13

Reading, adult colouring books, diamond painting.

clutterbugger · 11/12/2022 17:13

Paddleboarding. I'm also one of the least outdoorsy people I know 😂 I'm now a black belt at not getting wet when getting on / off.

Absolutely the best feeling being out in the middle of a lake or around the coast. Would never have tried it if I wasn't forced, now it's my escape.

SugarNspices · 11/12/2022 17:14

Loads of people seem to like to knit and crochet. I quite fancy taking up crochet is that harder than knitting I wonder?

I think it’s a case of try and see what works for you. My mum has knitted for donkeys years but can’t master crochet. I crochet but cant knit. Some people do both.

www.gathered.how I used their guide to help me master crochet which made it easier. They have lots of other crafts on there too

I love paddle boarding I've done it for 4 years know and understand that feeling of escape. I'm a wimp for the British weather though and will only do it in spring and summer months possibly a push early autumn

BabyFour2023 · 11/12/2022 17:16

I go to the gym and do yoga at home. Absolutely love reading and try to play the piano a couple of times a week.
I am quite “crafty” and this year have been buying furniture from charity shops and recovering / painting it and reselling. I also love making stuff for the house and have done some cushions for the DCs playroom in the past couple of months. Sewing is pretty easy to learn.
