Vegan wine

Not really aibu but has anyone seen any decent (and cheapish) red wine this year that vegan. Last year I found vegan chianti for £6 a bottle in lidl or Aldi (can't remember which) but no success so far here. I can drive to other branches or any supermarket (Bristol area)

There is no such thing as a Vegan wine.
you can choose a winemaker who avoids animal products in the processing but in harvesting the grapes many snails, beetles, and other mini beasts end up in the vats and it is impossible to avoid!

It's hard to get a wine that is definitely vegan, as the poster above says, but you can at least buy ones that don't have blood, isinglass, milk or egg added on purpose.

Yellowtail is nice!

Most inexpensive wine will be vegan as it’s significantly more expensive to fine wine with egg white or isinglass (fish) than clay. Normally you use those for fine wines - if you go to sainsburys website you can search by vegan and there are 84 options. I imagine it will be the same for most supermarkets. Just avoid expensive Bordeaux!

Actually Sainsburys own brand red tends to be vegan and is very good

How can any wine be "vegan" if yeast dies in it's making ?

FallingsHowIFeel · 11/12/2022 08:50

Post in the vegan section OP. You’ll get sensible replies there. 😉

No, I'm as dim as a vegan, it seems.

Yeast is not an animal.

Kokapetl · 11/12/2022 09:24

Yeasts are fungi. And less sensitive than plants.

I had this recently in a restaurant. They told me they had sourdough because normal bread had yeast so wasn't vegan. I wasn't even sure where to start with that one!

Co-op are quite good for labelling wine as vegan or not as well as Sainsburys.

Decafflatteplease · 11/12/2022 09:26

Hi @gogohmm not sure if they do red as we've only bought the white version but we like one which is vegan and the brand is something like vine and bloom? It's around £7 I think and is really nice but like I say we've only had the white version

It’s quite frightening that restaurant staff are so clueless s out food. Let’s hope they’re better clued you on allergens.

You must be pretty dim if you think yeast has a central nervous system 😁
